Mumbai-based fashion photographer Raj Shetye released his photo series The Wrong Turn last week. It depicts a lone Indian woman surrounded by men on a bus, fending off their advances.

"It is not based on Nirbhaya," Shetye told BuzzFeed in a phone call, when asked if this series was meant to depict the December 2012 New Delhi gang rape.

He denied attempting to depict the exact scene of that incident " referred to as "Nirbhaya," which is a Hindi word for "fearless" and a pseudonym given to the victim " although the similarities are difficult not to notice.

"But being a part of society and being a photographer, that topic moves me from inside," he continued. "I stay in a society where my mother, my girlfriend, my sister are out there and something like this can happen to them also."

When asked why he chose to depict this scene through a fashion photo shoot, Shetye responded that it is the only way he knew how.

"Being a photographer, the only medium I can communicate in is photos. For me, its as simple as that. It's art. Making movies, writing articles, making a poem " these are all ways of addressing the topic. Being a fashion photographer, this is what I can do best."

"This is in no way meant to glamorize the act, which was very bad," Shetye told BuzzFeed. "It's just a way of throwing light on it."

Shetye added that the idea for the shoot struck him two years ago, but it took several months to execute because he "didn't want to create something irresponsible."

He also clarified that while the garments worn by the models are all made by top designers, none of them have been credited publicly because the intent of this shoot is not commercial gain. "The concept is my baby," he said, "and the aim is to create art that will gather some reaction in society."

"The message I would like to give is that it doesn't matter who the girl is," he said. "It doesn't depend on which class she belonged in " it can happen to anyone."

Raj Shetye / Via behance.net

"We stay in a society where rich people roam in cars, and poor people who roam in public transport are in danger," he continued. "It was my intent to mix these two things which are pretty apart from each other and make aesthetically strong images about it."

Several people have pointed out " and are outraged by " the images' thematic similarities to the Nirbhaya case:

Did i just see a fashion-spread depicting the Delhi gangrape of Nirbhaya? Disgusting!I hope all associated, die of shame! Insensitive swine!

This is a screenshot of the comment thread under photographer Fabien Charuau's Facebook post about The Wrong Turn.

Shetye allegedly defended himself against critics in this Facebook comment:

This is the official explanation by the photographer of the Nirbhaya shoot (Raj Shetye) as sent to a friend on FB.

But nearly nobody's buying it:

Photographer: "Hey guys, I don't think anyone paid attention to the Nirbhaya case. Let's do a photo shoot and glamourize the whole thing!"

A Nirbhaya-inspired fashion shoot? Have we finished out-raging about this? Am I too late? WHO DOES A GANG-RAPE IN A BUS THEME FOR A SHOOT?

Some people don't care either way:

Screw perspective. Even if they claim it's not inspired by the Nirbhaya bus rape, I don't see the beauty https://t.co/AhQu2HFmqu

When asked about such reactions, Shetye told BuzzFeed that he just feels satisfied to have started a conversation.

Raj Shetye / Via behance.net

"On a personal level, too, I got many reactions. On my Facebook, from my friends. It makes me feel satisfied about my work " at least the work I did is so impactful that I'm able to shed some light on this. I don't feel happy, but it makes me feel satisfied. That whatever I've tried to communicate is being communicated."

I'm not sure if to be revolted or sad how mentality of people had changed towards sensitive issues like this. A glamorized photo shoot is a scandalizing way to depict a horrifying crime of this sort. It undermines the grotesque nature of such an incident in so many different levels.

Your thought?

Sometimes what is meant to be taken in a positive limelight, is taken in just the opposite. Every individual will have their own reaction to controversial things. It can go either way to be honest. You just have to be able to present controversial things in the positive manner, but even so it can be taken the wrong way.

The phootshoot stills are indeed controversial and can be taken in the negative manner. Not the way to convey the message that needs to be conveyed. There are far better ways.

Of course! Everyone has their own version and medium of depicting one's stand against issues of this sort. But glamorizing something as sensitive and horrifying as a gang rape and having a fashion photo shoot done is in very low taste.

There are so many ways to create awareness. Having the victims wear world renounced clothing brands and acting it out in photoes is probably not the best way to do it. Social etiquette and sensibilities of the civilized society must be taken in to consideration.

Normally, I support freedom for artistic expression. This though is crude and low. You don't make money out of a serious issue. Awareness is through education, not titillation.

When I just read the description, I thought to myself, what a brilliant idea to spread awareness. Then I saw the pictures, and I want to throw up. That rape case literally boiled my blood for so many days even though I live no where close to India. Just imagine what her family would feel if they saw this. This is disgusting on all levels. There are better ways to spread awareness than this.

Ok I get the fashionable clothes ..which means even well off, fashionable can commit such heinous crimes..however while getting raped the girl is not looking scared, angry..why don't we see any creepy expressions on all the guys faces..the expressions and the body language of the models are just wrong on so many levels..
