Entertainment Review

August 8th, 2014 by Mohar Basu

Entertainment Movie Poster

Rating: 1/5 Stars (One star)

Star cast: Akshay Kumar, Tamannaah Bhatia,Prakash Raj, Sonu Sood, Mithun Chakraborty, Krushna Abhishek

Director: Sajid-Farhad

What's Good: Junior - the wonder-dog and his entire canine brethren.

What's Bad: Everything else. From the poor CG, to the lack of novelty in the story, to the utterly wobbly screenplay with severe continuity and factual errors. Not that I was seeking logic but I was seeking fun which too is too much to ask from this film.

Loo break: If it keeps you away from the movie, it is the best place to be.

Watch or Not?: Entertainment serves trash in the garb of entertaining you. As competent as I think Sajid Farhad are, their filmmaking skills doesn't reflect their prowess over good writing. Jokes kept flowing thick for the first 15 minutes and everything after that was drab. How many times can you laugh over the Tere toh Jacqueline lag gaye' (prototype) joke? Akshay doesn't even near funny as he beats Salman in sleepwalking through roles. If you are solely depending on the dog's cuteness factor for relishing the film, I would recommend a bountiful experience at a dog show for you. Some films don't deserve audiences, after 140 minutes of sparse laughs and sheer drudgery, I can safely say Entertainment is one of them and take harebrained to another dimension altogether!

Akhil (Akshay Kumar) is living in abject poverty, doing 4 jobs a day to earn for his ailing father. It turns out that his father has been faking the illness because he isn't his own son. While tracing back, Akhil discovers that he is the son of Bangkok's diamond merchant Panna Lal Johri (Dalip Tahil). When Akhil reaches Bangkok he discovers that he must fight the heir of his father Entertainment (Junior) to get the 3000 crore worth property of his deceased father.

Then begins the tussle between Entertainment and Akhil over the property. Who wins is not the story but how it concludes into a warm ending is what must be watched.

Entertainment Review: Script Analysis

At the onset, I will express my respect for the film that the story was kept mostly neat. But one must understand that dialogues cannot alone help the film thrive. And as I have mentioned earlier, the long running joke involving name of actors and actresses is bound to be shortlived. Sample: Jaisi karni waisi Mamta Kulkarni'. Coming to the scenes, the film is replete with scenes of bad taste. I doubt even fans will be pleased to see a very fat Akshay Kumar explaining he needs to lose weight so that rocking his baby doesn't become a breastfeeding exercise. There is one word for what the film puts you through: despair.

There are such lame cues in the film that it is hard to describe them. The film's lead lady is a TV serial starlet and throws typical soap opera lines at the drop of a hat. She is affectionately referred to as Star Plus. The villains are named Karan Arjun and every time there is a tiff between the two brothers, there plays the title track of the film which seems to bind them together. I wonder if Junior was aware of what he was getting into, because he seemed the most sensible one of the lot present on screen.

In the first half an hour, the film still attempts to be enjoyable. The questionable basis of how a dog inherits a billion dollar property is something that-must-not-be-asked. All through the film what resonated through my mind was a prayer, spare the poor adorable pooch. This film takes the word dumb as an inspiration. In a scene where Johnny Lever drinks down a bowl of poisonous milk, he is revived by two irons!

Half way through the interval, I was done beyond limit with the film. The second hour was way more atrocious than its first. It's almost re-living the trauma as I write this. By the last scene, I was drained and even the cute dogs in the frame couldn't help the crankiness of a viewer, who was needlessly put through too much torture.

Entertainment Review: Star Performances

Akshay Kumar clearly did this film to help friends because I doubt anyone else of his potential will waste himself on a script like this. The actor is quite good at dry humor but he completely sleepwalks through the film. The yardstick of judging Akshay Kumar's talent is to check his zest in action scenes and even that seemed extremely morose this time. Bro, better roles please!

Tamannaah quite succeeds in what she sets out for. Obviously she is a marked improvement sinceHimmatwala and Humshakals, but she needs to find better roles where she might have something better to do, beside looking pretty.

Mithun Chakraborty as the girl's pocket pinching parent is good for what he does but again has the potential of better roles. Less than two weeks back, it was so much fun to watch him and Salman Khan dance together in Kick. The size of the role is immaterial but Mithun had absolutely nothing to do in the film.

Sonu Sood who is referred to as Dabangg's villain in the film was again a good artist wasted. Sonu do you even remember how brilliant you were in Dabangg? Why this!

Prakash Raj was an improvement since his last stints and though he wasn't any revelation but probably theHeropanti image of him has finally dissipated out of my mind.

Krushna Abhishek has the memorable bit in the film. He does a good job at being funny but that's all for him.

Johnny Lever again was completely wasted. He can be better compared to all of the above put together but he leaves the impact of a blink and miss role.

Entertainment Review: Direction, Editing and Screenplay

Sajid Farhad are indeed capable of writing good but the kind of script they have churned out for their directorial debut puts them in a very questionable place. To begin with, the story itself was executed terribly. I won't call it a bad story, and to make a film with an animal in frame is no easy job certainly. But wasting good actors and having your lead man consistently sleepwalk through roles is something that shows badly on the director. Obviously this isn't the best debut for the duo and probably a defined hint enough that they must refrain from making films any further.

The songs do stick to you for a while especially Johnny Johnny' but the rest of the album is forgettable.

Entertainment Review: The Last Word

Entertainment is a painful exercise to sit through and when a cute retriever with all the fuzziness cannot retrieve you from boredom, blame it on the film. Akshay Kumar was almost as bad as his Once Upon Aye Time In Mumbaai Dobaara performance, and that says it all I am sure. I am going with a very kind 1/5 for the film and it's a gift from a dog lover to all the dogs who appeared in the film.

As for the rest of the Entertainment team, filmmaking isn't as trivial as they think it is. Slog for it in their next film and probably then there will be some stars for them. As an afterthought, my fraternity will agree, we live a dog's life tormented by films like this.

Entertainment Has A Decent Occupancy At The Box Office

This week's release is the comedy drama Entertainmentstarring Akshay Kumarand Tamannaah Bhatiain lead roles. The film has opened to a decent to above average occupancy for morning shows. Though the single screens' occupancy in the morning show are little average, the multiplexes have shown a good sign.
The film has opened in 2800 screens in India. Being a light-hearted comedy and a family entertainer, the film is expected to have good responses from the audiences, especially the mass circuits. The noon shows are expected to perform better considering comedies have a good appeal at single screens.

Also since Akshay Kumar films have a massive appeal in mass belts, the film is expected to have a decent two-digit opening day figures. Since the last week missed out on any new release andKickalready being in its third week,Entertainmentis expected to cash in on this.

Entertainment Opens Well At Places - Overall Decent

Entertainment started well at places with an opening of over 50% while the on average the start was around 40%. The opening of the film was better than Akshay Kumar's last release Holiday - A Soldier Is Never Off Duty as far as opening morning shows go but that film picked up strongly from the afternoon onwards.

The film opened well in East Punjab, Rajasthan, CI and at parts of the Delhi/UP circuit. The opening in Mumbai was so so as Gujarat was average but other areas were on lower side.

In East Punjab the film had a major punjabi release Munde UK De 2 for competition but it easily got better opening numbers than that film. The collections for Entertainment were better in all the key cities of Punjab be it Jalandhar, Ludhiana or Patiala.

Entertainment review: It's sheer genius and Akshay's funniest film since Hera Pheri

by Mihir Fadnavis Aug 8, 2014 12:52 IST

#Akshay Kumar #BuzzPatrol #Hera Pheri #MovieReview #Prakash Raj #Sonu Sood

The deadly duo of Sajid-Farhad has had a deadly hand in creating some of the deadliest films ever made - Dhamaal 2, Golmaal 2 and 3, Housefull 2, Singham, Bol Bachchan, the Chashme Baddoor remake, Policegiri and even Chennai Express. These films aren't just horrendous, they're a scourge on this planet. We need something like the Guardians of the Galaxy to rid us of such bubonic atrocities.

Having been exposed to all of the aforementioned titles over the past few years and losing both my tear ducts in the process, I walked into Entertainment with a loaded gun, in case I felt the need to end my misery once and for all.

But as the first five minutes of Entertainment flashed before my eyes, my pupils dilated. I couldn't believe it - I began smiling, and then laughing uncontrollably, and then clapping at the jokes. Before I knew it, I had turned into the apes from the opening scene of 2001 A Space Odyssey, genuflecting and worshipping that large black slab we call Bollywood.

Brace yourselves for the shock of your lifetime: Entertainment is sheer genius. It's the funniest Akshay Kumar film since Hera Pheri.

Courtesy: Facebook

Once in a while, Bollywood churns out a classic comedy. It's either a genuinely funny film (like Hera Pheri), or a movie that is so bad that it's great fun (like One Two Three). Entertainment is a multilayered landmark that commands both those qualities and adds a third layer - it satirizes all the awful Sajid Khan-Anees Bazmee movies and even takes potshots at everything that is wrong with desi cinema and television.

To demonstrate the above points, here are some samples of comic excellence from Entertainment.

a) Tamannaah is acting in a television soap opera. She holds an aarti plate. It's Karva Chauth and she is ready to bless her husband who tells her he's in love with someone else. The camera dramatically jerks around three times and Tamannah expresses over-the-top shock. "Hamari Ekta humein Shobha nahi deti," she tearfully says. A brilliant takedown of idiotic desi soap operas.

b) A DVD store is called Mere paas CineMAA Hai' and the owner is Jugnu (Krushna Abhishek), the geekiest of film geeks. Upon seeing a happy Akshay Kumar, Jugnu asks "Kahan chale Sonakshi Sinha taan ke?" Later, when Kumar escapes death, he says "Prabhu Deva ki Mahima Chaudhary thi jo tu bach gaya." To cheer his morose friend up, he says, "Itna Pankaj Udhas mat baith."

c) Johnny Lever plays a lawyer named Habibullah, but is often mistakenly called called Dracula and Gorilla by others. In one instance, he tells Akshay Kumar, "Mai aapse do minute guftgoo karna chahta hu." Akshay asks, "Guft? Goo?" And the scene transitions to a slow zoom and shows us a pen stand shaped like a toilet.

d) The Ring is parodied here. The TV is turned on and Entertainment (the dog) walks through the screen into the real world, complete with extra long hair falling over his eyes and red contact lenses.

e) Three inscrutable lawyers in the film are called Sanjay, Leela and Bhansali.

In case you haven't picked it up, the not-so-subtle references, celeb bashing, potty humour and wordplay are all meta - the film is completely self aware. But there's more to it than that. In Entertainment Farhad-Sajid actually deconstruct the meaning, fabric and setbacks of entertainment in Bollywood.

The dog in the film is called Entertainment. It's a statement by Farhad-Sajid that entertaining movie audiences constantly is a bitch. In the film, Kumar is helpless when his character Akhil's family property is inherited by a dog. It's a metaphor for how the quality of entertainment in Bollywood has gone to the dogs. Akhil repeatedly tries and fails to kill the dog and take over. It means Farhad-Sajid have been struggling to produce a worthwhile comedy, because audiences seem to only want Housefull sequels,Grand Mastis and Salman Khan movies.

In one scene, Entertainment (the dog) falls in a crack in a frozen river. A distraught Akhil slams his hands repeatedly on the ice, screaming "ENTERTAINMENT! ENTERTAINMENT!", till they bleed. You get my drift? Entertainment is slipping away and the hands of Bollywood writers bleed when they try to recapture the fading art form.

Later, a rehabilitated Akhil apologizes to Entertainment (the dog). "Tu sahi hai, mai galat tha," he says. "Mujhe rasta dikhane ke liye thanks." It's Sajid-Farhad giving in to the demand of the public and the producers - there is no point making smart, original comedies. Generic, loud, crass, vulgar, regressive comedy is what makes money in Bollywood.

Habibullah informs Akhil, "Entertainment ka kehna hai ki maalik ka beta naukar nahi ban sakta." That's Sajid-Farhan telling us that the son of a star should only be a star, and star sons will always rule Bollywood.

Farhad, Sajid and Kumar feel guilty about being part of films that were offensive to women. So in one scene, a villainess beats Akhil up, but he refuses to hit her. Instead, he lets Tamannaah do the deed. "Aurat ka bojh aurat hi utha sakti hai," he says, as Tamannaah literally lifts the villainess up.

The sibling villains of the film Karan (Prakash Raj) and Arjun (Sonu Sood) are about to punch each other. But they look into each others' eyes. "Ye bandhan to pyaar ka bandhan hai" starts playing; the scene cuts to a black and white flashback showing a widowed mother feeding two kids. Cut back to the present as Karan and Arjun weep and hug each other while the song continues to bellow in the background. Later Karan and Arjun brashly take over a Johri empire', a sly hint at Rakesh Roshan taking over Bollywood with his dreadful movies in the '90s.

All of this hard work in writing would have been futile had the film been tackily shot, just like the films it parodies. Surprisingly, Entertainment is technically great, even the scene transitions are well done. There was a lot of noise made about Darren Aronofsky'sNoah having a path breaking CGI shot where hundreds of animals exit the frame to go to the ark. In Entertainment, hundreds of dogs enter the frame and one bites Sonu Sood's crotch. Dear Farhad and Sajid, please shut up and take my money. I bow to you in reverence.

Entertainment Pick Up Well in First Day Noon Shows.0
Posted by ankur baruahYou May Also Like News on: Tamannaahat Friday, August 08, 2014
Here is good news for Akshay Kumar fans. His latest film Entertainment which started slowly in early Morning shows has picked up well in Noon shows. In fact film is registering a decent 40% occupancy as per latest report. Film is doing little better in single screens with first show occupancy reported around 40-45%. Northern Part of India has opened much better than Rest of India as far as Morning-Noon shows is concerned.
There are places in which Entertainment is reporting occupancy of above 50% in Noon shows in Northern Belt. However Rest of India average occupancy is around 30-35%. Overall on India average occupancy is approx 40%.
If similar trend is expected for later part of the day then expect occupancy to increase to 50-60% which will be fantastic considering today is working day.
Entertainment is released in around 2800+ screens in India. Realistically if film collects in the range of 14-15 crore nett for first day then it will be a good start for rest of Weekend. Anything above that will be just outstanding. But that looks highly improbable as if now since today is a working day. Had the start in Morning shows been Bumper than it might have challenged for higher numbers for Day One.
