Acting and content - nothing matters. It is only about what sells. Or what can be packaged and sold.
Audience is to be blamed for it as much as filmmakers themselves.

Yeah, the directors never look for acting. 'Gareebi' makes them pick those real actors, not their will.

Mahi Gill isn't a better actor than Kareena. From what I recall she got bad reviews for the second film by this director. Just becaue Mahi Gill isn't popular like kareena doesn't make her the better actress.

That is why there is parallel cinema. They always hire great actors, not big names but good actors. So Rajkumar Rao and Nawaz are not out of job. They do have an audience.
Are we talking about acting or are we talking about directors not casting actors who will be best suited for the role? For example Vidya is a great actress, Vidya in Kismat Konnection and Shaadi ke side effects maybe not the best choice!

I think Bollywood has come a long way. People are starting to appreciate good films and good acting. Yes stupid masala films still rock the box office but at least people seem to know the difference between a good film and a masala film. The days of mindless worshipping of celebs are gone. So while you may love the Katrina movies at no point do you say I think she is the best actress. Now it comes down to the actors on what they choose to do. You can be Salman, SRK, and Akshay and just look for what sells or you can be like Aamir, Ranbir, Shahid who at least try to find good stories that could potentially hit big. I think directors should absolutely be blamed. They are the ones who come up with crappy storylines.

Bollywood has come a long way. People do not constantly need masala, but they still expect to be entertained or moved through the movies. Today there is an audience that would seriously appreciate movies like Swades and Tere Naam (they already were appreciated in their time). Even Lootera was appreciated, it put Sonakshi on the map as an actress and got her award nominations. Lootera was so good but not so good that it deserved to rip apart box office so it is not as if she is some helpless artist who has no choice but to do terrible masala flicks or else she would be out of the industry. Same for the others.
