Aamir overtook SRK with 3 idiots and never looked back ever since.
Anyway SRK is a far more talented than Aamir and can create magic on screen which is beyond Aamir's abilities.

Magic? Talking about black magic?
And is there any instrument to measure talent of people? How aamir is less talented?

Aamir isn't a natural actor. His choices of films are good and he makes sure he doesn't overact that's how he gets so many hits. SRK has lost his qualities now but he definitely could create amazing expressions onscreen which are still priceless but I agree that he's not versatile.

@Deathstroke Honestly Dil Hai ki manta nahi and HHRPK are usual romantic films. There is no outstanding quality. Akele Hum Akele Tum is also nothing special except for Aamir's acting in second half as a father. Raakh is a barely known film. How many have watched it? (I'm not talking BO here). The real special deal begins with Sarfarosh in Aamir's career.

@Others It is easy to stereotype SRK in 90s. But Darr, Baazigar, Anjaam are no romantic films. And romance is looked down upon now but in 90s those YRF, Dharma and Barjatya films were the ones that drew family audiences to theatres. Families had given up on movies due to increasingly violent trash of 80s. Films like HAHK, MPK, DDLJ got them back to theatres. I remember I was never fond of those romantic films and liked comedies more in 90s. But I've seen people preferring those SRK movies because they were clean, light hearted stuff that families could watch. SRK is slotted so badly that even Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa and Dil Se are now called romances though they are not. The former two films were appreciated back then for portrayal of youth and their dreams.
Difference started in 2000s when Aamir did different work like Lagaan, DCH, RDB, TZP, 3 Idiots whereas SRK was doing routine films with exception of CDI and Swades.

Oscar nomination of Lagaan has actually led to reinterpretation of Aamir's career. His routine films in past like Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahi are also called great and all averages and flops are called hits.

SRK cashed on his romance image too much post 2001. Even a film like MNIK was promoted on basis of SR-Kajol jodi. It's not just Aamir's films. It's SRK's own strategies too that have led to him getting slotted despite doing diferent work in past. He'd represent "love" in his Temptations concerts too.
