I am only bothered about what shows on screen: Anurag Basu on Ranbir-Katrina

Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif's first film after their break-up, Jagga Jasoos, has been hitting headlines for their refusal to co-operate with each other on the sets. There were even reports that common friend, filmmaker Ayan Mukerji had to be called to the sets to cool down the two. But the film's director, Anurag Basu says that he has not had any issues with the actors and shooting was smooth. "They are very professional people. There was never a problem because of them. A lot of news came in...which was funny. There was one about them not sharing a make up van. But the truth is that they were never sharing a van. No actor shares a make up van even if they are dating," says Anurag.

About reports of cold vibes and fights between the two on sets, Anurag says that he doesn't care even if it happened. "No one was on my set to see any cold vibes. I don't know whether there were cold vibes or not... I am bothered about what comes on my screen. Usse pehle and baad, I am not bothered about how they are."

In an earlier interview, Anurag had said that casting a couple is a disadvantage. Explaining the reason, he says, "If you are shooting a scene that shows someone falling in love and if the actors are already in love, then it doesn't come out well. You have to tell them that there is nothing between you..a lot of imagination and homework needs to be done," says Anurag, who will also be seen judging dance reality show Super Dancer on television.

Industry buzz suggests great business for the film since it reunites the hit pair that starred in Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009) and Rajneeti (2010). Add to that the curiosity to see their chemistry post the split. "The audience has become very intelligent, they can sniff how well a film will do from the trailer . No amount of promotions or break-up reports can change that."

Anurag Basu mastering the art of juggling

TNN | Aug 21, 2016, 11.34 AM ISTAnurag BasuAnurag Basu
Filmmaker Anurag Basu has frequently found himself amidst multiple controversies ever since 'Jagga Jasoos' shoot began. The film has been delayed multiple times over but in a recent interview Ranbir Kapoor cleared the air and said, "The film is like a warm hug. Special things take time." Meanwhile, Basu confirms that the film's shoot is over and the post-production has just began. He will also be seen as the judge of a reality show for kids. "The timing (for the show) is perfect. 'Jagga Jasoos' (shoot) is over. The post production is going on. The release has been delayed to next year. I have a new film, the sequel to 'Life In a...Metro' (2007), which is starting in December. Before that, this show will be over," he was quoted saying by a daily. Well, a cue to say that it is never too late to learn how to juggle between things.

For me, genres don't matter: Katrina Kaif

NAYANDEEP RAKSHIT | Wed, 7 Sep 2016-12:15am , Mumbai , dna

Katrina Kaif on her next and why it is a kind of film Bollywood has never attempted before

Katrina Kaif's Baar Baar Dekhowith Sidharth Malhotra releases this week. And now the attention is shifting back to her next release, Jagga Jasooswhich has been in the making for two years. Here, Kat talks about the delay in the film, defends director Anurag Basu, admits that films that are shot over a period of two years can be taxing on the actors, but stresses that audiences don't care when films take a long time to make, as long as they are happy with the end-product. Read on...

You are doing Raat Baaki with Fawad next...

That's not been announced. As of now, I am in talks for a few films; the only film that I have on the floor after Baar Baar Dekho is Jagga Jasoos.

Jagga Jasoos has been in the making for over two years now. Do you lose patience?

No. Although, it is definitely a test for you and your concentration, for sure. That's why you have to make sure you don't let yourself down. Because when the film releases, the audiences will forget all of these things. They are not going to care how long the film took to be made, what happened, etc. Audiences will come in to see the film and everything else is forgotten and one has to remember that. It may be a long process, but for the viewers it's a new journey. If you ever lose your concentration, the only person, who is going to suffer, is you.

Don't you feel the time gap will negatively affect the film?

No. Anurag Basu is a special filmmaker. He always has been. I remember, during the making of Barfi!, which also took a little time to be made, everyone was saying the same. It's just that his process is different from others. I think the process is equally unique. With Jagga Jasoos, he is attempting something very unique. It's an unusual film which I don't think anyone has ever attempted in the industry. It's an extremely complex film to make. Although the fate of the film is not in our hands and we cannot possibly know it rightaway, the attempt is unique, for sure.

Are you done with the shoot?

No. There are still 20 days of work left.

It's a musical film where you are playing a journalist...

Yes, that's correct. So you can imagine! If you have seen those short clips which have come on YouTube, you will understand why it is something I would wanna be part of.

Are you playing a teenager in JJ?

No, there is no age specification in the film. There won't be different ages like Baar Baar Dekho.

Do you think JJ will become a franchise?

That's a question for the producers. I am not the producer of the film, although you can make me one now! (smiles)

RK, Kat gave more... post break-up'

Anurag Basu on Jagga Jasoos delays and his lead pair's improved professionalism since their split

Chaya Unnikrishnan chaya.unnikrishnan@dnaindia.net

Anurag Basu is currently judging a kids' dance show and begins shooting for his next, the sequel to Life... In A Metro soon. In between all this, he will make time to shoot the remaining portions of the much-delayed Jagga Jasoos, so it meets its April 2017 deadline. Here, Basu talks about JJ, lead pair Ranbir Kapoor-Katrina Kaif and addresses rumours of the film being inspired by The Singing Detective...

Did the much-delayed release of Jagga Jasoos (it's out next year) affect you?

It was my decision to delay the film. If I would have been helpless and the film got delayed without any reason, I would have been upset. But I didn't shoot for all of 2015. I had shot only 10 days of Jagga.

Why is that?

I have been working in the industry since 1996 " first I was directing daily soaps and later, films. I wanted to take a break. Barfi! had done really well, and for the first time, I earned a lot of money. I wanted to enjoy that and spend time with my family. That's probably a typical middle-class mentality. In any case, I realised that my film would release only after Karan Johar's film (Ae Dil Hai Mushkil), so I thought, Why rush? Let's take a break'. Both my actors (Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif) were very sweet, they gave me dates in May, I said no. Then they gave me another chunk of dates in August. Again, I said no.

When you started the film, Ranbir and Katrina were in a relationship, but by the time it ended, the two had broken up. Were you worried about the shoot, post that?

Like everybody else, even I didn't know (how it would be). But when we resumed the shoot, and the first shot happened, everything was okay. Both actors became more conscious and more professional. I think they gave more to the film, post their break-up than before!

How will you go about the promotions considering the changed equation between the lead actors?

I am not thinking about it at all. There is no strategy. It's releasing next April " there is a lot of time. But I wish people would only talk about our movie and nothing else while promoting.

Is Jagga Jasoos inspired by The Singing Detective?

Just because Jagga is a musical, people are comparing it to The Singing Detective. I would tell such people to first watch the film. I have seen people often comparing films, out of the blue, without watching them. I haven't seen the Hollywood film, but I saw the trailer and can tell you it's different.

You start your next, the sequel to Life In A...Metro soon. Will you repeat the cast?

It is too early for that. But the format of the film will be on similar lines " urban stories of different people interlinked to one another. But the situations and crises in this will be different. Changes have taken place and urban cities have moved on since LIAM.
