Looks can get an actor noticed but they definitely cannot solely make their career.
Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Kajol, Govinda, Mithun, Rani, SRK, Shatrughan Sinha, Ajay Devgan, Dimple Kapadia etc. are not conventionally perfect looking, yet they had a great career. Even Aamir is cute but is short, has big ears, bow legs, still he has given hits in every genre. Acting matters.
If only looks were criteria and acting did not matter then Urmila Matondkar, Twinkle Khanna, Sonali Bendre, Shilpa Shetty (after makeover), Diya Mirza, Aditi Govitrikar, Lisa Ray, other models and beauty contest winners who did films, Sonam Kapoor etc. would be superstars. Didn't Milind Soman do movies? Tell me one film of his that clicked! Even though people still remember him from his ads and music videos in 90s.
Kumar Gaurav was way more good looking than his father. Definitely looked better than Anil, Sunny etc. But he fizzled out. Bobby Deol looks better than Sunny. But his career is not comparable to the latter.
Vinod Khanna looked way better than Amitabh. But his career cannot be compared to him.
I don't think only makeover could have made Rekha the legend that she is. She equally brushed up her acting, dialogue delivery. Everything combined made her legendary.
It is only exception of Katrina Kaif who has survived and given so many hits with just minimal improvement in acting and without even knowing the language properly. But it doesn't mean only looks are enough and acting is not needed.
Sonam is beautiful and at least knows Hindi! Why doesn't she have a record like Katrina if only looks matter?
I disagree that Salman can't act. His acting was there to see in 90s movies and later in Tere Naam, Phir Milenge and Dabangg. He wouldn't have had any flops if it was just about style and looks. The Khans have earned goodwill over the years and can get away with so so performance as actors now.
Aishwarya Rai was great in HDDCS, Taal, Devdas, Guru. Good in JA. What else? She's not a non actor or bad actor.
I disagree you feel more for a good looking actor's tears than a "bad" looking one. Ajay is far from good looking but he nails it in emotional scenes. There are two super good looking people in HDDCS, but it doesn't mean the third one's pain wasn't noticed because his looks weren't comparable to other co stars.
I don't find Smita Patil or Sanjeev Kumar conventionally good looking but I am always moved by their acting.
It's always a combination of factors that endear a performer to audience. But I think if we had to choose one factor that was more helpful to an actor in his/her career in long run, then it would be acting.
