Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Kajol, Govinda, Mithun, Rani, SRK, Shatrughan Sinha, Ajay Devgan, Dimple Kapadia etc. are not conventionally perfect looking, yet they had a great career. Even Aamir is cute but is short, has big ears, bow legs, still he has given hits in every genre. Acting matters.

If only looks were criteria and acting did not matter then Urmila Matondkar, Twinkle Khanna, Sonali Bendre, Shilpa Shetty (after makeover), Diya Mirza, Aditi Govitrikar, Lisa Ray, other models and beauty contest winners who did films, Sonam Kapoor etc. would be superstars. Didn't Milind Soman do movies? Tell me one film of his that clicked! Even though people still remember him from his ads and music videos in 90s.

Kumar Gaurav was way more good looking than his father. Definitely looked better than Anil, Sunny etc. But he fizzled out. Bobby Deol looks better than Sunny. But his career is not comparable to the latter.

Vinod Khanna looked way better than Amitabh. But his career cannot be compared to him.

I don't think only makeover could have made Rekha the legend that she is. She equally brushed up her acting, dialogue delivery. Everything combined made her legendary.

It is only exception of Katrina Kaif who has survived and given so many hits with just minimal improvement in acting and without even knowing the language properly. But it doesn't mean only looks are enough and acting is not needed.
Sonam is beautiful and at least knows Hindi! Why doesn't she have a record like Katrina if only looks matter?

I disagree that Salman can't act. His acting was there to see in 90s movies and later in Tere Naam, Phir Milenge and Dabangg. He wouldn't have had any flops if it was just about style and looks. The Khans have earned goodwill over the years and can get away with so so performance as actors now.

Aishwarya Rai was great in HDDCS, Taal, Devdas, Guru. Good in JA. What else? She's not a non actor or bad actor.

I disagree you feel more for a good looking actor's tears than a "bad" looking one. Ajay is far from good looking but he nails it in emotional scenes. There are two super good looking people in HDDCS, but it doesn't mean the third one's pain wasn't noticed because his looks weren't comparable to other co stars.

I don't find Smita Patil or Sanjeev Kumar conventionally good looking but I am always moved by their acting.

It's always a combination of factors that endear a performer to audience. But I think if we had to choose one factor that was more helpful to an actor in his/her career in long run, then it would be acting.

Great post! I agree with what you said.

Just to clarify, I personally don't think Salman or Ash are "bad actors" I just used them as an example based on what I see on the forum :)

acting matters more and more heroes are becoming versatile in the 70s 80s hero used to type casted as romantic hero action hero nowadays every1 is trying different genres
nowadays if u cnt act or show ur versatility u ill fade away great example Imran khan on the other hand John only made it bolly just for his looks but he also improving his acting now as he wants to stay in the long terms..

to become a huge star u need to have looks as well as acting oresle u can't attract the big crowd

in mass market is different they go 4 looks and dialoguebazi over "pure acting"

As beautiful as Deepika looked in RL..she ruined the movie for me. I just wanted more genuine acting from her. As sexy as Katrina looked in JTHJ she ruined the movie for me too. So yes acting matters to me even in commercial films.

Koko is neither sexy or your typical glamours and beautiful actress..but I don't mind watching her in Wake Up Sid.

Beauty without acting is like a beauty without personality..both ruin the beauty/film for you. Beauty becomes useless.

Nice topic!

My pov is similar to RockChicGirl and ThatKidInABox. Good looks do not always bring crowds to theaters nor it helps to keep an actor on top, you need talent as well. It also depends on viewers and the type of the movie

I go to movies for entertainment. A good story - drama, comedy etc, good cinematography pleasing to the eye. Acting comes last- if the story does not click with the audience and the movie does not make money, who cares about the acting.

I do not go to movies as an arm chair critic to judge the acting, I go to be entertained.

People flock to see movies by SRK, Kat, Salman etc because they know they will be entertained. Period.

There is too much importance given to stars. We pay attention to them and notice them, but there is so much more to a movie than that. The cinematography, the music, the story, the dialogues, the presentation of the trailer, the word of mouth all of this counts. The star is just the gateway to the trailer. We might watch Katrina Kaif's or SRK's trailer, but we won't watch the movie if we don't like the trailer.
