2 States opened very well at multiplexes with collections around the 50-55%. The opening is much stronger than would be expected for the cast with metro multiplexes recording very good collections and even other major centres collecting well.
It is a holiday for Good Friday so that will have benefited the film but the benefit will be more from the afternoon shows onwards. The single screen opening is likely to be weaker.
The opening is the third best of 2014 after Jai Ho and Gunday. The single screen opening is likely to be weaker although it may also be helped by the holiday but not to the extent of multiplexes as it has little face value and the content is not for single screens. The film will have a very good first day and it remains to be seen how big a success the film can emerge.

Well it is always said that it is not easy to fall in love, but little do we know that is actually the easiest part. The most difficult part comes when you have to confess to your parents that you are in love, or more so you are in love with the right person. But what if you both are from two different backgrounds, ideologies, and even worse when you belong to 2 States. This film tells the tale about the turbulence and triumph of two people in love. Based on theChetan Bhagat's bestseller 2 States the movie is more or less a motion book in itself.
2 States is the story about Krish and Ananya, who meet in IIM Ahmedabad and fall in love, their love and patience is put to test when they have to convince their respective parents about the whole thing. As Krish (Arjun Kapoor) is Punjabi and Ananya(Alia Bhatt) is a Tamillian, convincing their parents is an uphill task. Eventually Krish realizes that the most important thing in a marriage is love, that is the guy's family should love the girl, the girl's family should love the guy, the guy's family should love the girl's family and vice versa; and after all this in case the guy and the girl are still in love with each other they then, finally get married. How do Krish and Ananya go about this challenging task is what the movie revolves around.
Well to be honest the movie is almost a word by word description of the book. It even has the same dialogue, that's probably because the writer of the book and the film is Chetan Bhagat. Well the movie is entertaining, no doubt, but if you have read the book, you would be a little disappointed as most of the scenes that you would look forward to in the film, are not there at all, but they were the main highlight of the book. If you have not read the movie, still you would find some glitch in the flow of the story.
Nonetheless some great performances to see in the film, for sure. To start with Arjun Kapoor, who plays Krish Malhotra, look fabulous in the film, seems completely in the skin of the character and convinces the viewer of his agony and eventually you want him to be with the love of his life. Arjun Kapoor has improved leaps and bounds in his acting skills and conveniently carries the entire film on his shoulders. Alia Bhatt, who plays the role of Annanya looks pretty on screen, but somehow doesn't fit convincingly in the role of a Tam Brahmin. As compared to the last film Highway, this one seems less rehearsed and seems to be a very casual performance.
Amrita Singh who plays Krish's mother fits perfectly in the role of a possessive Punjabi mother. She is a surprise package with her performance. As she expresses her love for her son, agony of a broken marriage, fear of losing her son to a girl of his choice, all explicitly well. Though she has not been seen around off lately, but proves that she was and still is a terrific performer. Next to mention, Ronit Roy who plays Krish's father, as always does a fantastic job, in the role of a retiered Army officer, who is forever angry with his wife and son. Ronit Roy portrays the shrewd character very well, yet again after portraying a similar character in critically acclaimed Udaan. Revathy, who plays Ananya's mother, is wasted in the film. For such a talented actor, has been underplayed and her potential hasn't been exploited at all. Even though she does a great job in however little role she has.
Songs of the film, 'Offo', 'Locha-e-ulfat', 'Mast Magan'; have already topped all the chartbusters and is very well weaved in the story of the film. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy has composed some awesome tracks, which are hummable as well as foot tapping. The entire film has some very bright and lively use of colors, and thus doesn't go dull in any frame.
The only place the movie lags behind is that, some of the most important scenes in the book haven't been used in the film, which is why the movie seems incomplete, but only for those of you who have read the book. Otherwise the film is decent love story, and motivates you to give your love story at least one chance. For all those who are in love and have to do some convincing bits, you have lots of cues to take from here, and for those of you who didn't even try once to complete their love story, better luck next time.

Like most love stories in India, the boy and the girl in 2 States are from different regions. Ananya Swaminathan (Alia Bhatt) is a Tamalian from Chennai and Krish Malhotra (Arjun Kapoor) is a Punjabi from Delhi. They bump into each other at the IIM Ahemdabad canteen. Ananya is fighting with the cook because she feels the sambar is not up to the mark and she wants one extra rasgulla which is not allowed. Standing right behind her is Krish who tells the cook to give his share of the sweet to her. Post that Ananya clings on to him like a magnet. She has no other friends, girls or boys, we don't know why! Still she wants to be friends with this average-looking nerd. Ananya is pretty and soon Krish confesses to her that he can't be 'just friends' and is expecting more from her. So she has an option of forgetting him or to start dating him, and it's no surprise that she chooses the latter.
The fun actually starts when they are introduced to each other's parents. As you must have seen in the promos, the Tamalian parents feel that the Punjabis are too loud and uncultured and the Punjabis don't like them for a lot of other reasons. Though I may agree with a lot of things, I am yet to meet a Punjabi parent who will use insensitive language to someone's face and say things like, "Tamalians gore bhi to nahi hote hain!"
Krish is a reserved chap and there is a justification to his reserved nature, he has seen enough domestic violence in his own house between his father Vikram Malhotra (Ronit Roy) and his mother Kavita Malhotra (Amrita Singh). Both Ananya and Krish want to marry each other but seek the blessings from their parents who are never on the same page.
The problem is that the movie is too long and moves at a very slow pace. Long conversations make it even more boring.
Here's what I enjoyed in Abhishek Varman's 2 States. Alia Bhatt came across as a total natural even though she was out of her comfort zone and playing a Tamalian for the first time. She was the most convincing in the film. Both the mothers, Amrita Singh and Revathy added all the fun that there is in Two States. Arjun Kapoor sleep walked through the scenes and was just not able to hold the film on his shoulders as one would expect from the lead actor of the film. Music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy was good and that helped pick up the pace each time the film dragged.
Two States is a well-packaged product with great posters and promos but the film is disappointing.
#2States Opening is super strong in Dehli City and West Bengal.. In West Bengal Opening is just Behind #JaiHo this year..
#2States takes superb opening at metros.. Looking at strong day one..
Chetan Bhagat's bestselling novel '2 States: The Story of my marriage' was a fluid read for most viewers and almost everyone felt that like his previous books this one would also be adapted into a film. And so after numerous directing and casting changes (Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Ranbir Kapoor were all attached at one point of time) 2 States: The film has finally arrived to hit the big screen. Is it as good as 3 Idiots and Kai Po Che or is it as drab and awful as Hello (all three films being Chetan Bhagat book adaptations).
Story: If you haven't read 2 States, here's the story for you. Krish Malhotra (Arjun Kapoor) has had a silent rift with his dad throughout his life and he tries to escape the uneasiness in their relationship by studying hard and getting into IIM Ahmedabad. There he meets Ananya Swaminathan (Alia Bhatt) and after a couple of dates they fall in love. The problem arises when they decide to get married WITH their parents' approval. But the problem becomes a struggle when their families disapprove of the opposite family because Krish is a Punjabi North Indian and Ananya is a Tamil Brahmin! According to these two orthodox families, the North and South can never collide. Does it eventually work out?
In his first film as director, Abhishek Varman doesn't mess up the film version of Chetan Bhagat's most liked novel. He stays true to the book for the most part and doesn't deviate from the proceedings. He has borrowed entire dialogues and scenes piece by piece from the novel, which is something that works for the film big time.
Also, when dealing with cross-cultural love, it can easily turn out to be biased and one-sided. Thankfully, 2 States manages to respect both the communities represented without ever losing its humour quotient. It is a major accomplishment for Varman that he keeps the film lighthearted except for the few dramatic scenes. 2 States is a solid debut for the director.
2 States Movie Review
2 States' technical department is filled with top talent. Binod Pradhan who first made a mark with the cult Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron does the camera work for 2 States and brings the multi dimensional worlds of IIM-A, Delhi and Chennai together seemlessly. Namrata Rao has not wielded her editing scissors more than necessary but still makes a mark. Shankar-Ehsan-Loy make a return to form of sorts with 2 States. Their tunes have started to sound fresh once again with songs like Offo, and Iski Uski managing to sound pleasant.
If there is one department in which 2 States falters it has to be in the casting of the two leads, especially Arjun Kapoor as Krish. Arjun looks miscast in his role and he seems uncomfortable and uneasy doing the role of the silent rebel nerd Krish. A better actor would have done justice to the role. Alia Bhatt is actually good as the feisty Ananya but that biggest drawback for her is that her chemistry with Arjun is severely lacking. A smidget of kissing and intimate scenes don't make up for lost chemistry. Amrita Singh is quite funny as Arjun's mother. Ronit Roy is terrific as the strict, distant father. Revathi shines as Ananya's mother and Shiv Subramaiam also does a good job as Ananya's father.
2 States is a faithful remake of Chetan Bhagat's novel and makes for a light, breezy viewing with very few lagging moments in it. If you are in the mood for some solid entertainment, 2 States is the best offering for you this week. Abhishek Varman shows how a rom-com can be done right without ever trying to be attention-seekingly different. 2 States will offend very few and please many.
Box Office: The book's brand recall and the fairly popular publicity campaign has ensured that 2 States has taken a outstanding start at multiplexes in cities. The film has also benefitted from the Good Friday holiday. In the long run, it should be able find appreciation amongst the paying public.

2 States movie review
Star Cast: Arjun Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Amrita Singh, Revathy, Ronit Roy, Shiv Subrahmanyam, Achint Kaur
Director: Abhishek Varman
Pretty Tam Brahm ponnu' plus hatta katta' Punjabi munda equals to match made in heaven? If you go by '2 States', yes, but getting to it is long and arduous. The film sets out to be a solid, emotionally satisfying rom com, and goes well for a bit but then turns into a too-stretched-out jhagda' between the two sets of North-South parents. And the romance gets short shrift.
Krish Malhotra (Arjun Kapoor) and Ananya Swaminathan (Alia Bhatt) meet at IIM A and fall in love. It takes a while to reach the state where they want marriage, and that is all to the good. This part of the film is light and frothy, with both Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt rubbing off each other, and managing to generate some electricity while they tumble in and out of bed and class and graduating day ceremonies.
It's the meet-the-parents aspect of the plot, based on Chetan Bhagat's autobiographical novel of the same name, that becomes too much: just why are parents in this day and age so fiercely opposed to the union of chicken' and sambhar'? Mr Malhotra (Ronit Roy) drinks and is obnoxious. Mrs Malhotra (Amrita Singh) feels that Ananya has phansaaoed' their gora chitta ladka'. The truth is that Ananya is more gori' and chitti' than their sonny boy, and holds down an equally well-paying job. So what's the problem?
Krish's mom is submissive and passive-aggressive, like all good moms of boys who think their laadla' is being stolen away, but her downer against Ananya seems to have no real reason, just like in the book: culturally opposed parents may start off warring, but they also have ways of getting around these things without so much pointless sparring. Is this film coming out in 2014 or in the 60s?
The Swaminathans (Shiv Subrahmanyam and Revathy, well cast) live in Mylapore, and are the biggest cliche in the piece: they are grumpy and unfriendly, he drinks coffee and refuses to smile and she wears Kanjeevaram and does ditto, even though they come around to Krish faster than his parents to Ananya. South Indians can scowl and live in spare homes and sing Carnatic music, but the film exaggerates both the cultural specificities and the spurious differences.
When the going is good, both Kapoor and Bhatt, she more than he, rise above the film's flaws. He has a few good moments. But Alia Bhatt is a surprise. She leaves behind her earlier films, and gets into her character: she may not be an authentic Southie' in terms of body language, but she is all girl, easy and fresh and natural.
It's nice to see Bollywood attempting to create a contemporary young couple. I liked the way they proceed without fuss into that most modern of compacts " of attraction that leads to conjugation, minus coyness. It is done as just something that happens, a no-weightage progression. Which is why the parental khit- khit' seems, after a point, overdone and mothballed. The smooth, engaging first half descends, post-interval, into mopey melodrama, and I got impatient waiting for the inevitable resolution.
Get the outdated folks out of the way, make it crisper, and show us what Krish and Ananya did next. I'm waiting.
