Readers' Pick: Top Bollywood Actresses
September 5, 2006
Our Powerlist of Bollywood's heroines just had to spark great debate.
From 'why isn't she there?' to 'how can she be rated that high?' the arguments just kept coming in. Which is where this crucial list comes in. Here are the ladies you think lead the Bollywood brigade.
10. Mallika Sherawat
Skimpily dressed she might still be, but readers seem to have tired of Ms Sherawat by now. With no major releases for ages and not a watchable film in the bag, she's likely to drop off the list soon.
9. Konkona Sensharma
Now, this one just seems to be climbing from strength to strength. Konkona breaks apart from the rest of the Bollywood crop as she concentrates on performances, not glamour.
8. Sushmita Sen
It's been 12 years since she became Ms India, and this 30-year-old stunner just seems to get more ravishing by the day. We're content to just drool, on as she aptly prepares to play rockstar.
7. Bipasha Basu
She was the best thing in Humko Deewana Kar Gayee and Phir Hera Pheri, and considering both roles were insignificant dance bits, that's saying a lot. Now, it's all about the Dhoom 2 promos where she looks like the desi Angelina Jolie. Yum.
6. Aishwarya Rai
Now this one was more than a slight surprise. It seems readers are tired of the red carpet and have decided that Ash isn't what she used to be, dropping her out of the top 5.
5. Kareena Kapoor
Kareena's finally decided to shuffle up that glamour-girl image, now balancing the inane (36, China Town) with the critically acclaimed (Omkara). For now, lets just see her try the Helen dance in Farhan Akhtar's Don.
4. Kajol
She's back, and readers really couldn't be happier. They sat through Kunal Kohli's Fanaa just to watch her shine, and most would agree that she was the finest performer in Karan Johar's Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. The verdict seems unanimous: everyone wants more of her.
3. Priyanka Chopra
Films like Aap Ki Khatir might crash and sink at the box office, but this feisty lass has built up enough credibility (and pin-up value) with her audience to laugh off such disasters -- always easier to do when your next film is a Diwali release opposite Shah Rukh Khan.
2. Preity Zinta
Apparently, readers like to see Preity in short skirts and equally sized roles. She's been on screen in the two biggest films of the year thus far, Krrish and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, but in blink-and-miss parts. Anyway, readers smitten by her Jaan-E-Man promos think it's enough to crown her first runner up.
1. Rani Mukerji
Once again, we share the crucial verdict with the readers.
It's impossible not to acknowledge Rani Mukerji as Bollywood's top actress, with a massive gulf between her and any contender for the throne.
The good news is that despite dazzling us all year, she'll continue to stay visible. Baabul, Saawariya, Tara Rum Pum and London Dreams are all coming up before next summer, and we're all glad.
Rani rules.
