@BI: I love MPK as well and have watched it countless times. The innocence they portrayed in the movie can't be touched by today's generation, at least till now. And when it comes to DDLJ, I didn't find it that great either, neither did I go "Awww" for my romance bar to hit a sixer 😆 Swades is one of my favorite movies of SRK along with CI. I can pop them on anytime especially Swades. This movie has the right elements of everything including the subtle romance.

What works for DDLJ more than any other romantic film is an extremely high repeat value, IMO.

The film has no scope for boredom with a tight screenplay which travels all the way from Europe to Punjab and is a fun filled ride throughout.

The film isn't pretentious, doesn't try to portray itself as some epic love story with hour long tragic monologues(Veer-Zara) and yet is a modern day CLASSIC and a must in any bollywood lover's DVD collection.

1. It's timeless. You can watch it today and not get bored while I can name so many films, even films like Baazigar that just don't stand the test of time.

2. The songs. Not just the romantic ones, the words of Ghar Aaja Pardesi is something that calls to the deepest part of someone who lives far away from India. I confess to shedding tears.

3. Excellent ensemble cast. Everyone was perfectly cast, from Amrish Puri to Farida Jalal to Anupam Kher down to Mandira Bedi and Parmeet Sethi.

4. The whole NRI/ Indian culture dichotomy about what to keep vs what to take and what is Indian culture is beautifully explored without being preachy.

5. Last, but most of all. SRK and Kajol, The legendary chemistry is evident is all their films but this is THE film that it just explodes, all facets of it are explored and works so, so well.

I love romantic srk too, and he's best in romance for me...but I find DDLJ too overrated for his best romantic movie. VZ or KKHH is far better than DDLJ.

I don't think the movie is overrated. I agree that it is not SRK's best work. CDI and Swades are my personal favorites... But overall it was a good movie. SRK-Kajol chemistry, great supporting cast, picturesque locales, beautiful songs and of course the punjabi and the desi touch added on top of all these factors, made it a great watch and an ideal one for repeated watching.

Some of these movies like DDLJ, HAHK etc are evergreen movies... They are either guilty pleasure or they are just feel good movies or they could be just a good nostalgic watch...
