Last week, Bollywood actor Ameesha Patel was accused of abusing officials at the Mumbai International airport after they refused to upgrade her friend's flight ticket. And ever since the airport episode, she's being viewed as the new brat in tinseltown. But is she the first to throw her weight for personal advantage? We spoke to some of our biggest stars including Shah Rukh Khan, Sanjay Dutt and Preity Zinta if they ever used their name for their advantage. Here's what they had to say:

Shah Rukh Khan
Never in my life. Customs, immigration, restaurants or discotheques. I'd never ever say, 'Do you know who you're talking to?' As it is people go out of their way to be nice to me, so I don't want to push it. If I don't get a room in a hotel where my family would like to stay, I would make a request to the hotel, but even that would be through the proper channels. I've never said, 'Hanji, main Shah Rukh Khan bol raha hoon, room chahiye.' And I've told all those who work for me never to do it either. I've never walked into a restaurant expecting to get a table. If there's no table, I'll wait like the others. I've never held up a plane saying, "I'm coming late and you have to wait for me." In fact, I've been off-loaded a couple of times when I've been late but I've never made a hue and cry about it. The only time I made a plane wait for me was after the bomb blast in Colombo last year. Four of us were booked on that flight while the rest of the troupe was to come the next day. But I wanted all the actors and their family members to be put on that flight. So I requested Arjuna Ranatunga to help us out and he was kind enough to do so. But because of all that, the plane got delayed by half an hour. I felt odd, but it was an emergency. The plane didn't wait for me, it had to wait for the unusual situation. But I apologised to everyone. PS Come to think of it, there is one situation in which I do tend to misuse my name—when I'm late for meetings.
Do our stars throw their weight? |
Preity Zinta
There's never been any need to throw my name around. Most times, my office makes all my arrangements for me. Besides, when you're a star you don't have to ask for anything because people do things for you even before you can ask. And frankly, whenever I've called up anyone saying, "I'm Preity Zinta," they slam the phone down, convinced it's a crank call.

I've never taken advantage of my name for personal gain but I don't think twice before doing so if I feel it will benefit someone. In the past, I've used my name to get poor kids admitted into a school and to get medical treatment for those who can't afford it.
