Shahid Kapoor: I Wouldn't Want My Career To Pan Out Any Other Way
That Shahid Kapoor is a terrific actor cannot be debated. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about his luck. By his own admission, Lady Luck hasn't been by his side for a while now. After a less than impressive Phata Poster Nikhla Hero earlier this year, Sasha is now back to work his charm at the box-office with R... Rajkumar. The masala flick has opened to a warm response from the audience and Sasha's performance, in particular, has been appreciated by many. Shahid is naturally relieved as he had pinned his hopes on the movie. The actor is all the more excited about the film as it sees him in a never-before-seen avatar. "R... Rajkumar is an out-and-out mawaali film. You see me in a very, very rough, rugged avatar. You know, we used to see these kinds of characters in the 80s like Lakhan and all who are the smart guys of the street. Earlier, Govinda used to do it in his movies. But in the last few years, we have not seen that. And I think Prabhu Sir (Prabhudheva) has now brought that back. That kind of roadside guy who gives full-on dialogues, who does mawaaligiri and chhedos the girls in the songs," he laughs and continues, "I don't think anyone in the young generation has done too much of that. And it has been a fantastic experience for me."
This is the first time the actor is working with Prabhudheva. And not surprisingly, he is all praises for the Southern export. "I have found a new term for Prabhu Sir. He is the mawaali king. He is a rockstar, an absolutely fantastic filmmaker. And after you work with him, you realise why he is so good in this space. You know, he is so clear about what he wants. While working with him, I was like his personal robot. He would give me instructions like, turn your face 45 degrees left and smile a little bigger. Sometimes I'd smile and he'd go like, no, I don't want this smile. I want that smile where your eyes are big. So he was very specific about what he wanted," he explains.
And what does he have to say about sharing screen space with Sonakshi Sinha? The unusual pairing of the two had taken many by surprise initially but their fun, palpable chemistry on screen is being adored by the audience. "I think Sonakshi is a fantastic actor. And more importantly, she is a very, very good dancer. We had a lot of fun while shooting the film and I'd love to work with her again."
From the boy-next-door Rajiv in Ishq Vishk to the rugged Rajkumar of his last release, Sasha has completed 10 years in the industry. Needless to say, the decade gone by has matured him as an actor and has made him one of the most saleable actors of B-town. Ask him how he views his Bollywood journey so far and pat comes his reply, "You know, on one hand, I sometimes look back and feel, wow, I have completed 10 years. I have done 20 films. There's so much that has happened in all this while. The next minute, I feel like wow, it's like I just started out yesterday. So it's a very weird kind of feeling. But I feel like I am still starting out because there is so much more to achieve, there is so much more to learn. There are so many roles that I haven't done, so many filmmakers that I haven't worked with. But one thing I have realised is that time flies. So I have to work as much as I can because it just goes before you know, everyday just runs by."
Of course, his 10-year stint in the industry hasn't been without its share of ups and downs. While there have been highs in the form of Jab We Met and Kaminey, the good-looking guy has also been through lean patches. However, the Kapoor lad insists that he is immensely satisfied with the way his career has shaped up. "I wouldn't want my career to pan out any other way. Because
I am really happy with the person that I am. I am really happy that I have done it all on my own and I feel very proud. 10 years ago, I used to stand under hoardings and wonder if I'll ever have my hoarding up there. And here 10 years later, even though I might have done some bad films or films that did not do well, I am still getting great work and I have become the person that I have. I have learnt from my mistakes. Till the time you don't experience it for yourself, you'll never understand what somebody is trying to tell you. You need to experience it for yourself to truly understand what it's all about here. And I have. I have been in the thick of things, I have made my mistakes, learnt from them and I think I am very happy with the journey that I have had," he ends with a smile.
