What moon is sighted for eid?

How can it be based on a moon sighting? My Islamic calendar has eid dates on it 😕 And why is it different for different countries? Naturally, there will be time zone differences, but I'm confused.

Islamic months are based on lunar calendar, you know that right? :)

So, as far as I know, when they spot the 'new' moon, a new month starts. When a new moon comes after around a month of Ramadan, that means Ramadan has ended and Shawwal (ie. the next month) started. And thus, first of Shawwal is Eid!

Most Ramadan calendars give out an expected date for the Eid day, but there is always a possibility Eid may happen a day before or after, depending on the new moon sighting. 😃

Eid Al-Fitr 2013

Mubarak to all Muslims

around the Globe

About Eid Al-Fitr

Eid-al-Fitr (Eid al-Fitr, Eid ul-Fitr, Id-Ul-Fitr, Eid) is the

first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal. It marks the end of Ramadan, which is a month of

fasting and prayer. Many Muslims attend communal prayers, listen to a khutba (sermon) and give

zakat al-fitr (charity in the form of food) during Eid al-Fitr.Muslims all over the world have begun

to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the holiday at the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting.

Eid al-Fitr is one of the most joyous days of the Muslim calendar and is traditionally celebrated

with prayers, festive decorations, visits with family and friends, new clothes, charitable

donations, and sweet treats. Families cook special foods and young kids receive pocket money.

It is a time of thanksgiving and celebration featuring much merriment and joy.
