First Half Year Verdicts: Decent Second Quarter

Wednesday 3rd July 2013 10.30 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

The first half of the year saw a decent second quarter thanks to two huge hits in the form of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Aashiqui 2. The latter proving to be the biggest sleeper hit of recent times and the former emerged the third highest grossing film of all time. The first quarter was a disappointment but the second quarter saw a turnaround mainly thanks to medium budget films without big names.

The problem in the first half of the year was that all the big films outside Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani did not live up to expectations. Some may have done okay but aside from Yeh Jawaani hai Deewani none of the other big films put up the numbers they should have. The major winners of the of the first half of the year are as follows with the nett collections or expected nett collections in brackets.

BLOCKBUSTER

1. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (180 cr)

2. Aashiqui 2 (79 cr)

SUPER HIT

-

HIT

3. Raanjhanaa (60-65 cr)

4. Chasme Baddoor (42 cr)

5. Fukrey (36-38 cr)

6. Jolly LLB (30 cr)

There were 85 Hindi films released in the first six months with the above six films emerging major winners, Another 7-8 films did decent business while the rest 70 odd releases were flops or total washouts

Lootera rejected

Lootera earns Rs 15 crore in initial weekend
Sonakshi Sinha in a still from the film
When director Rajkumar Gupta's Ghanchakkar did not fare well at the box office, all eyes were on actors Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha's Lootera and Sanjay Dutt's Policegiri that released simultaenously last week. While both films had high stakes riding on them, Lootera has managed to rake in around Rs 15 crore over the weekend. Dutt's cop caper that he wrapped up just before surrendering to the court pulled in Rs 10 crore.

"Lootera started with a poor opening and first day numbers were not impressive. The film marginally picked up over the weekend. The first day net collection was around Rs 4.15 crore and Saturday (July 6, 2013) stood at Rs 5.20 crore while on Sunday (July 7, 2013), the film collected around Rs 6 crore bringing the total to Rs 15.35 crore," says distributor Sunny Khanna.

According to buzz in the trade, Policegiri did reasonably well in single screen theatres but did not fare well in multiplexes. The film apparently suffered due to lesser shows in multiplexes. The movie collected Rs 3.30 crore on Friday (July 5, 2013), Rs 3 crore on Saturday (July 6, 2013) and Rs 4 crore on Sunday (July 7, 2013) respectively. The total now stands at Rs 10.30 crore.

"Policegiri is a hardcore mass entertainer with all the elements that go into a commercial potboiler. But the lack of a lead star whose current standing can allow a huge draw at the box office has kept it from making a strong impact. On the brighter side, Sanjay Dutt fans in B and C centres got to enjoy watching him," says exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi.

Q. Lootera has got 4 or 5 stars from media and trade but why is this not reflected in collections which are just 16 crore?
A. Extra stars does not mean extra collections. Reviews are reviews be it trade or media or from anywhere else and none of these reviews matter. There is a huge chunk of the audience that is just not going to watch films like Lootera and no amount of stars will bring them in. These sort of films have a limited audience but an audience which is prepared to pay so you release accordingly with more shows at higher ticket rate venues and try to get the maximum of your audience into theatres with higher rates. If you have a consumer for a film like Lootera you want him to pay 200 and not 100 because at the end of the day there are limited consumers for the film so its best to get the most out of each consumer.

i wanted this film to do well for ranveer (even though i hate him😆)
if this film with great reviews and WOM is not doing well then i wonder what will happen to raamleela
which has more budget that this 😕
he released film like after 2 years and this type response is a set back to him !
sonkashi has no problem since she have more upcoming films ...
even if she manages films like lootera and commercial flicks in a year she will have smooth carrier ...its ranveer who should be careful ...
