I think the fact that the song has created NO HYPE just proves her time is over. She may have been great in her time but I find Sridevi was way better.
Madhuri comes across as a "wannabe".Ghagra was nice but,...the song was stupid and it just came across as desperate. Not because shes in her 40's...but just because it seemed unnecessary.

Are you serious? People were hooting where I went to watch the film 😕 In fact like someone said, we reached the theatre 15 minutes early so that we wouldn't miss out on the ghagra song. Man, this woman lights up the screen and how One look at her dancing and you would know why people like Katrina can never match up to her. Men go crazy at Sheilas and Chikni Chamelis because she can shake those assets so well. Shaking assets = Dancing skill? Erm, I don't think so.

As far as the comparison between Katrina and Madhuri is concerned, both dancing skill and acting prowess are not even valid grounds for comparison. Heck, I wouldn't compare Katrina to people like Bipasha or Amrita Rao. Evern they're miles ahead in terms of acting. What may be compared is popularity and screen presence. In terms of popularity right now, well obviously Kat is more famous, But if you look at how popular Madhuri was back in her time to Kat's popularity today, Madz knocks Kat out of the park any given day. The Madhuri craze was unbelievable. The fact that she overshadowed Salman in HAHK says something about the connect that she had with the audiences. She was the hero of the late 80's and early 90's. Her screen presence is tremendous, which is true even today because after ghagra had ended, I looked at my friend and said, "Isme Ranbir bhi tha kya?" 😆

Kat is famous, but I don't think she'll be able to rake in the numbers if a film relies completely on her shoulders. All the ATBBs she's done so far have been with either Salman or an equally famous co-actor. Her charm is pretty much limited to her curvy body [shaking assets included] and a firangi face. Indians are obsessed with firangs. Don't ask me why 😆

Madhuri's acting prowess was greatly overshadowed by her own popularity and dancing skill. But when I watched films like Mrityudand, Anjaam and Ram Jaane I knew that she could act brilliantly too. Her Chandramukhi in Devdas was the only character that moved me. It was so sensitive and subtle. But that's just my opinion.

Age is a factor. So is hypocrisy and mindset of Indian audience. BUT this is also a fact that Madhuri is over-exposed in her naach gaana and smiling stuff and she has not reinvented herself.

It is obvious those days are gone when her one song was enough to make a film hit. She dances fine even today but lacks the energy she used to dance with till 90s. It was very obvious in Ghagra. She did not look effortless and energetic in it IMO.

Now the exposure part, I remember when we'd gone to watch Wanted in theatre, people had cheered loudly when Govinda sprang up from nowhere! Yes he looked old. But his energy was intact. And most importantly, he was no longer much exposed in media and films so it was a surprise for audience to see him after so long.
Same for Sridevi. She has been careful and rather smart in not exposing herself much (in her pre-EV years). So seeing her was a surprise for audience.

Another issue is reinvention. One reason for people going gaga over Aamir and Salman in Ghajini and Dabangg was that audience saw them in totally new and unexpected avatars! EV was a pleasant surprise too because Sridevi was not doing what she has always been doing or what actresses her age are shown doing. So she got acceptance.

Madhuri is forever alluding to her past glory! No reinvention, same looks, same thumkas and item songs. Why will anyone whistle or cheer at Ghagra when they have better songs from her heydays playing on TV every day? Why will anyone be surprised to see her if she's in ads and TV shows?

Where is the exclusivity? The element of surprise?

Even male actors have to reinvent themselves and constantly find ways to surprise audience. The question in MD's case is less about gender and age rather more about her career strategy, image and lack of reinvention.

Wow!
My experience was completely different. Here in Canada I went to watch it on the second day and there were people who got off their seats to whistle, hoot and dance along.
Alot of them were also singing! And I just sat there with the biggest smile on my face when that song came on. For the first time I thought that you don't need to be vulgar to present an item song. In the song she was poise, elegant, naughty but didn't seem vulgar at all!
I think this is something that Bollywood needs to learn (possibly some good moves too).
As for the current generation passing over Madhuri...well she has aged and many take it in the negative light but there are also others who love her and support her for all that she does.

Even if people were whistling in the theatre (which I highly highly doubt im sure these are just madhuri fans saying that)
The song is a dud. Face it. Its reality. People today want to see Chikni Chameli or Halkat Jawani
You're right Katrina and Kareena could never do what Maduri did 20 years ago. At the same time, Madhuri cannot do a Ishq Dance or even the average dances that Kareena has done.
Katrina may be known for shaking her assets, but please don't make Madhuri seems like she was a bubble-gum dancer. Madhuri had her share of chest pumping and overtly sexy moves too,
Her time is over. Face it, realize it, accept it and move on with your life.

I agree with some of the posts...its got nothing to do with age...Madhuri has not really reinvented herself even in her hey days..of course she did try doing heroine oriented films like mrityudand, anjaam etc. but they were never complete without a dance number from her! Even the ghagra song gave me a sense of deja vu..it reminded me of kajra re..and madhuri doing her usual tumkas!!

madhuri is madhuri. nobody can match her smile, her jhatak matak. having said that, i hope she stays away from all these item numbers, etc. there is time for everything, as her fan i accepted this..time to move on.

Geez i will never understand why everyone insists on treating Madhuri like some sati savitri/bharatiya nari goddess who can do no wrong when she is far from it? Like dude, Madhuri was the epitome of vulgarity in the late 80s and mid 90s. Who can forget Aaj phir tumpe from Dayavan, Dhak Dhak( one of the most vulgar dances), Choli ke peeche kya hai(a suggestive song about blouse and breasts) ,the love making scene from Parinda, the scene from Beta before Saiyan ji se chupke and the dance itself..and she continued with such cheap stuff until her Aunty age..so the bottom line is, Madhuri gave cheap and vulgar scenes with almost all her co stars, be it Jacky in Vardi, Anil in Beta/Parinda, smooched Chunkey Pandey in Khilaaf , had a sex scene with Sanjay Kapoor in Raja and that dirty scene with Akshay in Aarzoo where he bites her feet and the so called sati savitri laughs 🤢

there is nothing wrong with portraying sexuality in movies, just like everything else its a part of human nature...its immature people like you who see everything as dirty. and thanks for explaining what choli ke peeche is about

A generation starved for love made Saiyaara a megahit

A generation that texts “ily” but struggles to say “I love you” out loud found its anthem in Saiyaara . Soft, aching, and impossibly tender, it...
