After TANU WEDS MANU, RAANJHANAA could be an encore of Indian small town love stories

It really is after a pretty long time that a love story is returning to arguably one of the oldest city in the world Varanasi and it has aptly been named RAANJHANAA. The striking feature of this love story being directed by Aanand L Rai is the fact that he has taken an unknown face for the world of Hindi cinema in the form of Dhanush, who may be known to the fans in the metropolitan cities as the 'Kolaveri Di' star, but for the country per se, he is a relatively unknown entity and he has been paired opposite Sonam Kapoor.
Aanand L Rai has developed the template by using the small towns of India as the leitmotif to situate his story, perhaps with the objective that the location has an element of unknown and a mystique associated with it, and also the fact that small towns of India apart from the historic structures that they are studded with, otherwise in terms of layout, design, its bazaars, its mode of transportation, etc, all has an element of binding commonality. He used it with great conviction in TANU WEDS MANU and made it a super hit film, and he could be in for an encore with RAANJHANAA.

It indeed is rather surprising that while the western world has used the backdrop of Varanasi to create quite a lot of amazing content Hindi cinema still has to discover the charm of Varanasi. One thing is very clear from the promos of RAANJHANAA that Aanand L Rai has been able to capture the charm of Varanasi and he has deconstructed the lead pair by giving them the getups that gel with the identity of the city. The chemistry of Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor seems to be inspiring and with the backdrop of Holi being used in RAANJHANAA, one only hopes that the manner in which Holi is really played in this part of the country, it being the nerve centre of Holi celebrations would get its true depiction. Holi seems to be an important leit motif of the film as the posters of RAANJHANAA that have been released show the Holi celebrations.

CHECK OUT: RAANJHANAA director Aanand L Rai - Sonam Kapoor is a middle class girl

The music by A R Rahman for RAANJHANAA is a tribute to the elfin charm of Varanasi and all the songs of the film have subtle nodes of Shehnai imbued one way or the other, as a tribute to the Shehnai maestro who belonged to the city, Ustad Bismillah Khan. One interesting highlight of Rahman's association with RAANJHANAA lies in the fact that he read the complete script given to him in English before coming on board to hold the baton and spin the web of his miasma of music.

RAANJHANAA is a film which tries to capture the love or rather infatuation of a boy for a girl from adolescence to its ultimate manifestation into young adulthood and one only hopes that the city of Varanasi gets its due from the world of Hindi cinema through the efforts of Aanand L Rai manifest through the performances of Dhanush, Sonam Kapoor, and Abhay Deol who plays a cameo in the film.

Ok I finally downloaded the songs. The album is a disappointment. I liked the Mun Shudi song from the promo but when I heard it completely it was spoilt by the voices used.
Only the title song is good but a portion is very similar to O Ri Chori from Lagaan. But I cant get it out of my head.
