He didn't need to take Mallika Sherawat's name like that, and use her as an easy target. She's there because she's worked her to get there (I don't mean that she's been part of great film, but rather she worked hard on networking, her PR, etc). And I haven't followed the Cannes coverage by the Bollywood media, but my guess is she's talked about for her fashion. Not a big deal. The fault comes that they also don't bother to talk about the other, less mainstream films and only focus on Bollywood stars and the big producers. No need to drag in Mallika Sherawat.

But his points are right on the mark.

Onir does have a point, but I think its unfair to blame BW for allt he fame and name and media coverage it gets. If someone gives u credit and coverage, it will take an extreme extreme generous soul to say no I do not fuilly deserve it, infact I do not deserve it at all, please so and so should get it. This is not how the thing works. No one is that saintly. If Onir was the one receiving praise and accolades, he would be doing same thing.

As for cannes, its hugely hyped for fashion and those from bw are the ones well known in fashion high ground or get more coverage. And its same not just for India or Indians but also more or less other countries. I donot think mainstream media talks about even english or french or german films that are shown in cannes or judged in competitve categories. There are film journals, film centered magazines, cannes information pages which will have those information and those who are really interested will look into it.

Not everyone goes and watches movie for the art of movie making. to understand movies, the expression of movies, its just time pass and fun for most and follow style trends. and it is world wide.
Like it or not, due to language, larger reach or for whatever reason, bw movies have much more wider "mainstream" appeal, for fashion or for appearances otherwise.
Yes when Government initiatives neglect other parts of India and features a saroj khan choreography, then there offcourse should be legitimate reason to complain, but not when mainstream media or corporate houses are doing it. Its business.

lastly when it comes to movies and actors, if walking on red carpet of cannes and sporting fashion labels and getting noticed was as big a deal as onir makes it out to be, that one appearance and they would be hailed, people like Tabu and Irrfan khan would be out of work. They would not be part of movies like life of pi. Actress Tannishtha Chatterjee would not be acting in big budget classic adaptations like Anna karenina among others.

Enough regional movies still are circulated in festival cricuits, are watched over, win prizes , the actors are noticed .

The problem is that India is a multilingual country with each language having separate scripts and that Hindi, the medium of bw movies is more widespread as its one of the official languages of India.

But I do not think eminent directors like Ray, Ritwick Ghatak, Gopalkrishnan etc are ignored.

Lastly Onir is lashing out against all the prevailing practises yet he himself chose a soft target like mallika, who imo has worked equally hard as an Aishwarya bachhan to get noticed in international circuits.

No matter how small her role was, it still was a big deal for an Indian artist to work in an international film .. since then Mallika has been trying hard to get more work in Hollywood .. So well whatever she is doing at Cannes is for her to get more opportunities in international cinema rather than representing Bollywood ..

I understand that most of us would like to believe that Indian actors are stupid that they bother so much about a few minutes appearance in Hollywood movies, but if you see from an actor's perspective, then any kinda of opportunity to showcase their skills, to as wide an audience as possible, is all they want to do ..

Onir maybe a good director but why to pull someone else down to make your point .. If Cannes is no big deal, then why even bother to talk about it ... And Bombay Talkies team publicized a lot that they are taking the movie to Cannes .. Lunchbox team could have also done similar marketing .. why bother complaining later ...and at least, people on this forum were aware of Lunchbox being played at Cannes (I did some photographs in this forum). So, it's not like nobody took note of Lunchbox at all.

Lets simply say she went there as an audience/a fan. Anyone can go to Cannes. Why rant about it? Blame the Indian media for giving her more publicity rather than film-makers with credibility.

He's--to summarise, BANG ON. Especially with the statement about "100 Years of Bollywood instead of 100 years of INDIAN CINEMA". I'd opened a thread quite long ago regarding this, that in mainstream media vocabulary, "Indian Cinema" and "Bollywood" are almost interchangeable. Recently in the Sunday Times supplement of TOI, there was an article feting 100 years of Indian Cinema, which was basically an alphabet list, signifying which Letter of the Alphabet stood for what aspect of Indian Cinema. And from A to Z, all I could see was "BOLLYWOOD, Bollywood and Bollywood". Sad. Very sad.

as usual TOI gives a headline which catches the eye but does not give justice to the content of it's article... it's all about sensationalism even when the subject of the article is raising valid points to be given thought... i read the ENTIRE interview and not JUST the snippet that the TM provided... and I empathize with Onir.. he may come across as bitter but he has every right to...
