Top 10 Self-Made Stars!

No godfathers, no contacts, no 'chacha' and 'mamas', just sheer talent! They struggled for years to achieve their stardom.

We take you through the journey of the top 10 self made stars:

Shahrukh Khan: His rags to riches story may sound straight out of a fiction novel. A middle class Delhi boy arrives in the city of Mumbai with a mere 1,500 rupees hoping to make it big in Bollywood. He started his acting venture with TV serial 'Fauji' where he worked hard to perfect the role of a soldier. And after 20 years, he is titled 'King Khan' and his residence has become a tourist hotspot. He taught us that stardom cannot be achieved overnight and dreams do come true.

Deepika Padukone: Daughter of famous badminton player Prakash Padukone was expected to carry on her father's legacy until surprisingly she chose the allure of film industry. The Bangalore state level badminton champion started her modeling and acting career at the age of 19. Her towering height was an added advantage to her striking features. She debuted at the Lakme Fashion Week in 2005 and won the Kingfisher model of the year award in 2006. With a debut with Shah Rukh and a number of movies and advertisements in her kitty, she seems to be the most promising actress in Bollywood.

Kangana Ranaut: Kangana was born in to a royal family in the small town of Himachal Pradesh. After her graduation she moved to Delhi and joined a modeling agency to fulfill her Bollywood aspirations. Kangana faced strict opposition from her parents for acting in Bollywood. But she stood her ground and came to Mumbai where Anurag Basu spotted her at a coffee shop and offered her the lead role in his movie Gangster. And after seven years, she has become every onscreen gangster's muse.

Ranveer Singh: This Bandra boy always dreamt of becoming an actor but he lucked out in the field of networking. With no godfather, nobody could guide him to the road that led to Bollywood. For three years, he went to producers offices to ask for work until he got a call from Yashraj Films for 'Band Bajaa Baarat'. Ranveer was lucky that his casting director sent his pictures to Aditya Chopra on the day YRF was looking for a newcomer.

Vidya Balan: Vidya was born in to a conservative Tamil Brahmin family. Her parents supported her acting decision but stressed that she must complete her education. She aspired to become an actress after seeing the works of Shabana Azmi and Madhuri Dixit. After countless auditions, she starred in Ekta Kapoor's Hum Paanch as Radhika and her career took off. Vidya is now known for her remarkable women centric performances.

Bipasha Basu: The Kolkata girl aspired to be a doctor since she was a child. She was a spoilt tomboy who was fondly called 'Lady Goonda'. She was spotted by model Mehr Jessia Rampal in Kolkata who suggested her to pursue modeling. She acknowledged her advice and shifted her base to Mumbai. After winning the Godrej Cinthol Supermodel contest, she became familiar with the directors of Bollywood who offered her several movies. Her debut movie 'Ajnabee' attracted unfavorable reviews but her negative performance won her the Filmfare Award for the Best Debutant.

Akshay Kumar: Formerly known as Rajeev Bhatia, Akshay was a waiter at a restaurant in Bangkok and he studied martial arts. He shifted to Mumbai and started teaching martial arts where one of his students happened to be a photographer and suggested him to pursue modeling. After countless ad campaigns, he was offered the movie 'Deedar'.

John Abraham: John Abraham has a MBA degree and a specialization in Economics but got attracted by the glamour industry. His athletic body and long hair made heads turn when he worked at an advertising agency as a media planner. Later, in 1999, he won the Gladrags Man Hunt. He took up an acting course at the Kishore Namit Kapoor School and undoubtedly, films were the next step to his glory.

Anushka Sharma: Anushka Sharma is a disciplined army girl from Bangalore. She had no aspirations of becoming an actress until her fortuitous meet with designer Wendell Rodricks. Wendell spotted Anushka shopping at an apparel store in Bangalore and instantly chose her to be his show stopper for the 'Les Vamps' show. Her charming smile and curvy figure got her noticed at the fashion week which led to her audition for her debut movie 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi'

Nawazuddin Siddiqui: A small town boy from Uttar Pradesh worked as a watchman to supplement his theatre income. He is known as 'common man' of Bollywood for his unconventional roles. He landed a small role in 'Peepli Live' and his career took off from there.

There are rumors that Ranveer Singh's dad financed BBB along with YRF. All I gotta say to that is there's no smoke without fire.

They struggled for years to achieve their stardom.

^ That statement sounds so...heavy (for a lack of a better word) to me. The only people I'd associate with that statement from the given list are SRK and Akshay...and I guess Vidya too. People like Deepika and Anushka still have a long way to go, it's only been a few years.

I'm so proud of my jaanu. His is an inspirational story, truly. I've heard it so many times. He worked so hard to get to where he is today. <3

I have more respect for those in the industry who achieved fame through their hard work/talent rather than through family connections etc.

This doesn't have to be taken in the literal sense...Its just a phrase used to show the vast difference between two levels...SRK grew from a middle class boy to a tycoon worth 600 million dollar ...Rags to riches is the apt description here😛
