Varun-Aish: Maybe a New Trend?!

There's new rumors stating how Aishwarya is being roped in to be paired opposite Varun in a forthcoming flick. Granted it sounds like it's just a rumor. But it got me thinking and I thought it might bring up a great discussion about older women being paired with younger guys. I've noticed that when older guys are paired with younger and younger girls, some are quite critical (I know Saif and SRK face criticism all the ime), but most of the Indian audience has been welcoming (BO results). Of course, there are those comments about how old the character looks in constrast to the actress (ie: Cocktail, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, OSO, etc.). But would it really be that bad if an older woman was paired with a younger man, if the script was appropraite?

I've seen people passing comments about how it might look like a mother-son duo or a aunty-newphew pairing (even though I think thr age difference it only maybe roughly 14 years), but it could be a reflection of changes in relationships in the urban lifestyle. If directed and displayed properly, it could be an interesting topic/subject matter. The power dynamics in a modern love story/romance has changed dramtically from what the audience sees in a TV show. In a lot of places, women aren't dependent on men and women are quite financially independent and stable. Stirring up a romance with someone younger classifies her as a cougar, but we're seen so many examples where older men have married way younger women. And I really believe that a good story can help break that perception that an older women is "preying" on the younger men, when it can be true love.

And who knows, it might just start a new trend of older women working with younger actors. I just think it's a bit unfair that the actors can work with younger and younger actresses and seem to get away with it, but when the actresses do it--it looked upon as a taboo.

BTW: Varun-Aishu were just an example since I read an article about them in the HIndustani Times, this topic can apply to any BW pairing.

Who knows...maybe its the kind of role that Dimple and akshay Khanna had in DIL CHAHTA HAI...

I have no problems with older women being paired with younger guys...but isn't Varun a little too young...for Aish if its a regular lovers role...I don't know...our society will accept 48 year old Khans with 20 year old girls...but I doubt if they would do the same with Aish and Varun...but anyways...I will be glad just to see Aish back...although I wish she did her comeback movie with SRK😆

If story and script is good then why not? Audience is warmly welcoming new and different kind of movies and I am sure they can accept this kind of movie too.

@blue: Yes, but that was a side-plot. I'm talknig about a straight up full-flick with a older woman and younger man. He's 25 and she's 39...she def can't be his mother. 😆

But Kareena and Imran are another good example--the gap is def less, but I don't see what would be wrong if Kareena were to work with Arjun, Sid, Varun, etc. She's older too, but I remember she faced criticism too when she first signed EMAET...it's so stupid that age difference matters. I mean if it suits the role, who cares a shit?!

There's this movie called the Rebound with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Justin Bartha that was about an older 40 year old woman who falls for 20-something man. It was made so well! You don't once think that this relationship is so wrong and society condemns them completely but it's great to see how they overcome everything.

The trailer basically shows the whole movie but it's a great watch!

Dunno. Desi society is hypocritical when it comes to this issue. Older man + younger woman is fine but the other way around is no no. 🤔

She can be his mother if her character got pregnant in her teens. It happens.

Yeah, but if an older woman-younger man pairing sounds absurd then teen pregnancy might be too absurd for the Indian audience...that too if Aishwarya doesn't look THAT old in the movie...jsut sayin' it really depends on the role and the look of the film. If she does play a mother, she can't walk onto the sets like a diva, but there needs to be wrinkles, a bit of gray hair, and some tiredness in the eyes from all the long years of living.
