Aamir Khan rejects 200 scripts in 12 months
'Mr Perfectionist' Aamir Khan has rejected 200 scripts in last 12 months for his production house. The scripts also included the works of famous directors such as Vishal Bharadwaj, Pradeep Sarkar and Priyadarshan.
Not to rush into things, as other production houses are doing, Aamir Khan's team is taking it slow. While the rest of the industry already has their calendar full for 2014, and are now scouring work for 2015, Khan's production house is waiting for the right script. The selection of the near perfect script is an elaborate affair at this star's place and passes through a number of phases before Khan decides to put his money, work and interest in the film.
Talaash was the last film to which Khan said yes and now his entire team is waiting for their next venture. To begin with, the script is scrutinised. If the script clears this round then a signed letter from Khan goes to the writer stating that he has accepted the script and that he will get back to him/her. In the next three stages that a script needs to cover, it changes hand a lot. Again, an evaluation takes place and only the best of the very best goes to Khan, who then reads it at his leisure time, which can take months. Khan does his own work by talking the script over with Kiran Rao and then only work starts at the Khan productions.
The master creator, who made a name for himself as the most thoughtful of the actors detests copying or plagiarism of any kind and if he gets even a hint of a phrase from somewhere else, he just drops the whole script. After Lagaan, which took five years to produce, Khan is making a film every year but the dearth of innovative scripts seems to have hit his productions again. We just hope that we don't have to wait another five years to get a Lagaan or Peepli Live or Delhi Belly.
