Mallika Bhat, the make-up artist responsible for Kajol's luminous new comeback look in Fanaa, gives Aditi Jayakar Kane the lowdown on 'making-up' our screen beauties

• KAJOL
Professionally speaking: I worked with Kajol in Fanaa and the recent Marie Biscuit campaign. For Fanaa, since Kajol was making a comeback, I was given strict instructions by the director Kunal Kohli, that she should look very good in every frame. Throughout the movie, we used make-up to give her a 'no make-up' look. As she played a blind girl in the first half of the film, I used minimum make-up and only applied a little mascara to her eyes. But in the second half, I could experiment a bit more. I made her look more Indian because she plays a mother; and she's Kashmiri, so I gave her hair-extensions and added kohl to her eyes, along with regular foundation and slight make-up on her face.
Body Basics: Kajol has a very interesting face. She has a very strong bone structure, and a prominent jaw line. She does not ordinarily like to dress up, but once she sits in the make-up chair she gives herself to you completely. She's the kind of person who gets completely transformed by make-up and takes to it very well. Once we finish the entire look, along with the costume, she looks absolutely fantastic.
Her skin has turned a little dry post pregnancy, so during Fanaa the make-up used to take a little time to settle down. But given the crazy schedules we had, and the dry weather we were shooting in — Delhi in November and after that in Poland, we couldn't help it.
• BIPASHA BASU
Professionally speaking: I've done Bipasha's make-up in Rakht, Shikaar, Barsaat and No Entry.
Body basics: Bipasha has beautiful, smooth, dusky skin. It has good texture. But it has a tendency to go dry. Bipasha gives herself to the make-up artist completely and says 'treat me like your canvas'. She has high cheek bones with plenty of place on the eyelids to work on and a good amount of space between her eyebrows. This gives the make-up artist room to try out different looks. Also, the reason why she can carry off an Indian look as well as a glamorous look. Bipasha takes to make-up very well, and it suits her face. I love to shape her eyes and give her the durga-mata look with a lot of kajal. She also has a knack of dressing perfectly for her roles.
• KAREENA KAPOOR
Professionally Speaking: I recently did Kareena's make-up for a magazine cover, and I'm also her make-up professional for Don. In Don since she plays Helen's role, I've given her an ultra glam look with plenty of cool accessories. I can't say much, but it's the most glamorous Kareena has ever looked.
Body basics: If you ask me what I'd like to do with her face, it is to get her straight out of the shower, remove all her make-up and rub her face clean of everything. Then just apply gloss on her lips, and a little mascara on her eyes and send her out for the shoot. I feel she looks her best without any make-up as she has such a fabulous complexion. She has a broad jaw line, high cheek bones, and a very strong face structure, beautiful coloured eyes, and after her workouts in the morning when she comes in for her shoots, she has a peachy pink glow. I don't want any make-up on her then, but Kareena loves make-up when she's facing the camera. She loves her hair in different styles, different colours on her eye-lids and everything else under the sun.
• MALAIKA AND AMRITA ARORA
Professionally speaking: I've travelled with Malaika almost across the globe now since I do all her stage show make-up. I'm jokingly called her 'show ki rani'. We've been to Frankfurt, Durban, America… I did Amrita's make-up from her film Rakht onward.
Body Basics: Both sisters have been blessed with natural good skin, thanks to their mother. I call Malaika's skin 'malai' and Amrita's skin 'maska'. I kid them that the make-up brush just starts moving on its own. Malaika of course has the most beautiful bone structure and a great pout that we accentuate with a little lip make-up. Malaika knows she is glamorous and can carry off anything with great panache, so I stick to the glamour look. But since I've done mainly stage shows with her everything has to be bolder, so that it is noticed from a distance. We have mastered the art of make-up on her face and now 20 minutes is all I need to get her ready. My patent 'Malaika' look is black and gold eye make-up. She too takes to make-up extremely well.
I feel Amrita looks best without make-up. She looks her best when we clean her face after a shoot, and I keep wondering why we have to get her all dolled up when she looks much better without make-up. As this stage of her life I feel she has never looked better. All her baby fat is gone and maturity is setting in. He bone structure is getting stronger and her skin too is glowing.
