Replace theory doesn't work. By same logic an Aamir couldn't have pulled off a Ready or a Dabangg.

Stars smaller than Aamir Khan are getting 100 crore in offbeat films. Talaash is no proof of Aamir's pull or WOM/trending which is most often used to hype his BO pull in recent years.

3 Idiots theme was more universal compared to LRM or Munnabhai MBBS. Education, student life and following your dreams. Otherwise tell me why did it break records in China, South Korea? Who knows Aamir there? The theme made it huge. And so did combined value of Aamir and Raju Hirani in India.

Ghajini got mixed reviews. And I know it crossed 100 crore but that's due to hype, and fresh genre (people were bored of romance). But it's surely credit to Aamir for pulling it off and I do not deny that to him back then.

Dhoom 3 has to be huge but Aamir alone isn't adding anything special to it to take it to 200 crore or more. It would've been huge with any big shot A-lister in it (notably Salman).

I don't use Dhobi ghat because that was clearly an art film and he had less role in it.

First movie to do 100 he got. The first to do 200 is a result of post-Ghajini hype, Raju Hirani and BIGGEST thing the theme! Other films are acclaimed but their theme is not so universal.

I feel if Salman could do 199 crore with ETT without any brand then it would have been a cakewalk for him to take D3 beyond 200 if he was in it.

3I did 200 due to its theme whereas Salman got ETT to 199 on his own strength alone.

All I am saying is that Aamir doesn't add to Dhoom 3. Dhoom brand adds to Aamir and gives him a much needed fillip.

Media preference couldn't do wonders for Aamir's past films (not talking Ghajini/3I here). Media doesn't take film to 200-250 or makes it work even in China!

Yes. Only for Aamir. Hope Katrina is paired with Uday chopra.

- There is world of difference between DG and Talaash. DG had no songs, not even a proper story, no mainstream faces. Talaash on other hand has everything - stars, songs, story (so what if serious).

- There is difference between Universal APPEAL and universal THEME. The theme (education) of 3I is universal. This is why it did so well in territories where Hindi films rarely release and no one knows who Aamir is. Kahani or PST have no connect for a wider cross section as per their theme.

- I look at it differently. The 16 crore difference is not Aamir. But the theme of the film in case of 3I and brand/franchise in case of Dhoom. 3I's subject made that difference which ETT couldn't cover. Salman alone has more brand value than Aamir Khan IMO, atm.

- There's no need to be biased. What's "only because"? Dhoom is a huge franchise. Aamir alone is not responsible for D3's success when it happens. He already has fewer hits than other stars.

- Barfi did 100 only due to media? Media supported Kahani a lot but that didn't do 100. Media was crazy trying to hype Rockstar but did it do 100? Much of media tried to support Talaash but it stopped at 90 something.

Yes I suppose so. Though the Aamir-Kat pairing seems highly unexciting atm.
