My only claim was that this film isn't BB!!!

To become Blockbuster it needs to double it's budget.

When is a Film called a Hit, Super hit, Blockbuster and All Time Blockbuster?

Posted on October 26, 2012 | Comments Off

I have been asked this many times by many users on how this system works. So, I decided to write up an as detailed explanation of this as possible. So, here we go explaining all terms we use as a verdict for a film.

Disaster – When a Particular Movie suffers a very huge loss. For E.g. a film made on a budget of 15 crore and has less than 7 crore lifetime collections.

Flop – When a small or medium budget film fails to recover its money by a lesser margin. For Example a Film with a Budget of 15 crore and Distributor share of 7-12 crore.

Average – A Film is called an average film when it either fails to recover budget by a very very small margin or makes very less profit. For Example, a film with a budget of 15 crore collected has a distributor share of 13-17 crore.

For small and Medium Budget Films, Distributor share plays a veryimportant role in declaring the final verdict.

Hit – When a Film successfully enters the profit zone it is called a hit. A Film with a Budget of 15 crore and Distributor share of 20 crore is a Hit.

Also, High Budget Movies can be called hit when they do not recover budget from just theatrical collections, but put up Huge collection as it is. For Example a Film with Budget of 70 crore and distributor share of 50 crore OR a film with budget of 100 crore and Distributor share of 70 crore.

Super Hit – For a film to be called Super Hit, it is very necessary that it recovers its budget, whether a small budget film or a high budget film.

A Film with a Budget of of 15-20 crore will be a super hit when its distributor share is ranging from 30-50 crore. A Film with a budget of over 70-80 crore will be called a super hit when it has distributor share of 90 crore.

Blockbuster – For a film to be a Blockbuster its lifetime performance is considered. It should put up decent collections throughout its run. Budget of the film plays very little role here.

For small and Medium Budget films, the distributor share should be way greater than what is required for the film to be a super hit.

For High Budget films, the Net collections should be near to record figure of that time.

All time Blockbuster – For a film to be an all time blockbuster its Budget and Distributor share are not considered. Only the net collections play the importantrole here.

A Film can be an all time Blockbuster if it surpasses the record net collection at that time with collecting huge money during all the weeks it ran at the box office.

Suppose, the record net collection at a time is 150 crore. So, a film which collects 160 crore in lifetime with 135 crore in first week and 20 crore in second and 5 crore in 3rd week, will not be called a all time blockbuster. Because, thecollections fell heavily in 2nd and 3rd week.

One more thing, It is not neccessary for a film to break the current net collection record to be called an all time blockbuster. It can be the 2nd Highest or 3rdhighest film but the collections should be glorious with less drops in 2nd and 3rd weeks.

Examples:

So, here are certain examples of when a film will become Disaster, Flop, hit, etc with respect to budget and net collections(& not distributor share).

Budget – 10 crore
Disaster – upto 8 crore
Flop – 9 to 15 crore
Average – 16 to 24 crore
Hit – 25 to 45 crore
Super Hit – 45 to 99 crore
Blockbuster – over 100 crore

Budget – 20 crore
Disaster – upto 15 crore
Flop – 16 to 27 crore
Average – 28 to 40 crore
Hit – 40 to 60 crore
Super Hit – 61 to 99 crore
Blockbuster – over 100 crore

Budget – 30 crore
Disaster – upto 15 crore
Flop – 16 to 35 crore
Average – 35 to 45 crore
Hit – 45 to 75 crore
Super Hit – 75 crore to 110 crore
Blockbuster – over 110 crore

Budget – 60 crore
Disaster – upto 25 crore
Flop – 25 to 60 crore
Average – 60 to 90 crore
Hit – 90 to 110 crore
Super Hit – 110 to 140 crore
Blockbuster – above 140 crore

NOTE: This post is not valid for films released before 2012. The time was different earlier. This is the latest method in use.

SRK scores hat trick, Ajay all set for one

By Joginder Tuteja, MovieTalkies.com, 23 November 2012

How the business has grown. Four years back when Ghajini had broken the barrier and turned out to be the founding member of the 100 crore club, one wondered whether this was the beginning of something magical or just a spike. Circa 2012 and we have over 180 crores coming in just 10 days. Now that's what one would call magical. Fair enough, so there will always be talks of increased number of multiplexes, increased screen count, higher ticket prices and more spending power. However all said and done, any and every film needs to have that 'something' to it that makes it succeed. JTHJ and SOS have shown that.
Yes, of course none of them is either a classic or a quintessential rollicking masala movie respectively. They aren't even as entertaining as some of the best films (and possibly revenue generating movies) released this year. They aren't even finding universal acclaim coming their way. However, a part of this universe has at least stepped in to check out what the hype is all about. That has been good enough for both films to stay steady during the weekdays as well after a very good extended weekend of six days. As a result, both films have succeeded and turned out to be clean hits at the box office.
There were expectations of Jab Tak Hai Jaan to be achieving the 100 crore mark in it's first 10 days itself but the film fell short by a couple of crores. Still, at 98 crores, the film is now the third highest Shahrukh Khan grosser till date and would soon be highest ever by the end of second full week, hence putting behind Ra. One and Don 2. At 84 crores, Son of Sardaar is also second consecutive success for Ajay Devgn and he is all set for a hat trick of 100 crore successes with Himmatwala as his next release in March 2013. Meanwhile it would be interesting to see how the film scores at the new single screens where it has just been released.
