I guess different ways for the word, but I've always heard mad as "challa/challi".

The word challa as been used in in other contexts in punjabi but literal meaning is ring. however in this song it means pagal, mad man in love. Regarding spelling probably starts with a j. But either way the word is punjabi, because i have heard punjabis say it when saying someone crazy or pagal and wouldn't pagal be the hindi word ?
anyhow, ring wouldnt make any sense in the song lol

The meaning of Challa which Gurdaas maan , Babbu maan and Rabbi used in their songs , is same ... they used the word Challa for a Young Man ...

same meaning can be used for this movie song too rather than Jhalla ( mad ) 😕 and calling it challa ... so i feel it shld have been sung like Challa ...

its making ppl confused ... 😆

Umm..lol, I think Simmi's explanation clears things up a bit...Challa is the Punjabi word for Jhalla. Like I said in the other thread, jhalla is a Hindi word and since the song is in Punjabi, it would make sense to use the Punju word for jhalla..Yash Chopra had said, Challa means mad lover..and the song is about a mad lover/wanderer searching for his love.

But isn't Rabbi's Challa about a ring? 😕 I assumed so because in the video there's a ring. My Punjabi is not that strong anyways and his Punjabi is too thet for me to truly understand 😳 😆 I dunno the other Challa's. 😳

The Hindi word for ring is anghooti as far as I know..

I dunno I don't think it's that confusing because the other lyrics more or less confirm the song is about a pagal ladka wandering around and not a ring. 😕

i think punjabi speakers can hear it as jhalla because the singer himself is a punjabi speaker so you need to have that accent to hear it. since srk and yashji are not fluent punjabi speakers like raabi they don't hear the difference.

Jhalla in punjabi is like Rabbi is pronouncing in this song

and Chhalla is like Gurdaas maan's Challa

Two different pronunciations for Two different words

i think it's the punjabi accent thats making the word sound different because i am punjabi as well and everytime i say challa it always comes out as jhalla for some reason but i can say the gurdas maan one challa properly.

So Challa is sung by Rabbi.

You guys won't believe it, 2 or three days back I was thinking of opening a thread with the title Where is Rabbi?

Ohhh LOL...tussi so right ji...Punjabi and writing it in English are evil! But, I do get it. Yup yup...dono different different. Rabbi's challa is jhallah while Gurdas Maan's challa is gehna.

Chalo at I least I can talk in Punjabi if I can't write the words in English😆

Chalo at least tussi understood my gibberish ji lol. I haven't see the video to go with the song, but I hear the song as JHALLAH. And the context of the song also (to me at least) makes it seem like a pagla deewana looking for something etc.

I don't know...maybe I'm hearing it wrong...😆
