'Phir Hera Pheri' or 'Chup Chup Ke'? Hard to choose!

By Nikhil Kumar

Two comedy films on the Bollywood platter this Friday. And there are equal reasons why one should not miss either of them.

Ironically, Priyadarshan's latest movie Chup Chup Ke will face competition from Phir Hera Pheri , which has been directed by Neeraj Vora.

The irony lies in the fact that 'Phir Hera Pheri' is the sequel to Priyadarshan's own superhit comedy Hera-Pheri that continues to entertain viewers till this day since its release more than four years ago.

There is no doubt that of the two releases this Friday, it is 'Phir Hera Pheri' that apparently has the upper hand, primarily because people want to see more of the (mis)adventurous escapades of the film's three main characters Baburao ( Paresh Rawal ), Raju ( Akshay Kumar ) and Shyam ( Sunil Shetty ). The sequel's story begins exactly where the original ended. The three main characters -- Baburao, Raju and Shyam – are rich but they don't know how to spend their money. It is then, Raju, the most notorious of them, comes up with a plan to use the money to become richer. Obviously, the plan does not work out to their anticipations and the three land into more troubles and hilarious situations.

While the very title of 'Phir Hera Pheri' is enough to attract audiences to the theatres, not many would be aware that the movie is not directed by Priyadarshan, but by Neeraj Vora who wrote the dialogues and screenplay for the original movie.

On the other hand, 'Chup Chup Ke', which is directed by Priyadarshan, has not been promoted vigorously enough to create hype for the film. However, Priyan's name as the director of the movie will certainly command a pull at the marquee. The filmmaker has an incredible record of making hit comedy films. His last two comedies Garam Masala and Malamaal Weekly both have fared very well at the box-office.

Another thing that can work for 'Chup Chup Ke' is the jodi of Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapur which was quite liked by the audience in the recently released 36 China Town .

'Chup Chup Ke' has Shahid playing a small town guy who jumps into the sea to commit suicide because he is too burdened with debts. But he is caught in the fishing nets of two fishermen (Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav) who sell him to a Gujarati businessman. In the businessman's house, Shahid pretends to be deaf and mute and falls in love with the businessman's daughter (Kareena Kapoor), who also happens to be mute. As the story progresses, Shahid's lies are exposed.

Many things are common between 'Chup Chup Ke' and 'Phir Hera Pheri'. The former has the glamorous presence of Neha Dhupia and Sushma Reddy , while the latter has Bipasha Basu and Rimi Sen to lure the audience.

And the most prominent similarity is that the comedians in both the films are the same, except Akshay.

Well, it will be a tough contest at the box-office between the two films and a dilemma for the audience – which one to choose?

As for me, I will go along with them both.
