Never really liked the whole "art" vs "commercial" terminology. I think maybe "experimental" is a better way to describe films that attempt to break away from conventional film making (be it in terms of the way it is shot or structured, perhaps the absence of a narrative, etc).

The way I see it, there are 4 types of films: experimental, mainstream, adult...and Salman. 😉

IMO,that's how we should actually classify films...Good ones and Bad ones.nothing else..but how do we define a Good/Bad film?

A thousand subjective factors??? I just divide them b/w what I liked and what I didn't. And I don't much delve into why I liked it or why I didn't. 😆

I dont mind art films as long as they have a story and keeps you engaged. I watched dhobi ghaat..I dont know if it is classified as art cinema bu I simply loved it!! also movies like Earth, Astitva, Monsoon wedding are some of my favourite movies.

Exactly, I haven't watched many movies for the past 2 years but was such a bolly buff before that I watched mostly every movie that came out so can't comment on anything recent.
It's very subjective but some of the art movies that came out and saw I didn't really get and they went over my head (like raincoat, never really got into that movie at all) maybe was too young then who knows but the few that I loved and still remember are:
Filhaal
My Brother Nikhil
15 Park Avenue
Jhankar Beats
Chameli
Pinjar
Dor
Iqbal
3 Deewarein
Taare Zameen Par

I would repeat the lines repeated a gazillion times over here:
...how do you exactly define an 'art film'? If we have to classify movies with serious content and a sensitive and nuanced treatment to human realities and emotions, then a lot of movies would have to be considered "semi-art" because they adhere to either one of these aforelisted criterion. Few movies fit both, which have already been named: Dor, Udaan, Maqbool, Black, Black Friday.
And then, people's tastes differ. A lot of movies are just "artsy" while being over-the-top and completely pointless. And, last but not the least, they're not everyone's cup of hot choc.

I follow some of them...only when they receive national awards[any regional language, dubbed]...they are worth watch...[tried and tested formula😆]
Basically me too dont have urge just to follow art movies but so do everyone here...minority of fan-base on IF follow art movies...and if people follow they dont come here...😆

How can I forget to add, the movie which left permanent impact 'Black Friday'

A serious movie does not necessarily equate to an Art Film. Over the years, it seems like serious films have been labeled as Art Films and more often of poor box office collections.

Personally, I enjoy movies that have engaging characters and a plot that maybe simple but well directed. I may overlook mediocre performances but wouldn't enjoy poor characterization/storylines -- in any case I think I find the masala films of today a tad boring and uninspiring. Not that I am against comedy/action films -- I just don't think they entail any originality in terms of humor and performances.

Keep smiling,
Soni

I don't really understand what classifies as 'art cinema', I mean I like Nishant, Raincoat, Ek Chalis ki last local, The girl in the yellow boots, bazaar, etc. However I think they're classified under parallel cinema.
Generally I don't really care whether the films, art, parallel, or Bollywood, as long as it has a tight scipt and good acting. Movies like Welcome, Houseful, Vivah, Bodyguard, K3G, etc just get on my nerves. They're an insult to the audiences inteligence and I really don't understand how they managed to rake in so much money.
