Okay, just crawled out from under a rock here. Everyone everywhere is talking about Drama King and I was clueless till now.

Not surprised at Mrs.Akhthoo's idiotic comment. After all The Akhthoos celebrate birthdays by cutting slum cakes.

I haven't read the entire discussion here. However, I do think racial profiling and institutionalized racism are very strong in the US - and I base this on Stewart and Colbert, not just on the SRK issue. If this happening to Shahrukh Khan ensures that the Indian government protests the treatment of its citizens, that is a good thing. And I think his statement "next time I'll tell them I'm white" was funny!

Although I do agree to the fact that the US has every right to check anyone they suspect might pose a threat to their country, and I think such reality checks are also good for superstars such as Shahrukh to bring them down from their mighty horses, but, this frisking business at Western airports does involve a certain level of racism. Regardless of your surname, people who appear to be of Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi etc. origin are generally approached more often at airports for so called "random checks" than others. Some of my fellow Indian friends are so used to being called on for such "random checks" every time they travel internationally, that they are surprised at the times when they are allowed to go through without any such special frisking requests. Most people including myself are happy to cooperate with authorities but when these procedures take up hours of your time, especially when you've just returned after an excruciatingly long and exhausting journey, it is bound to make you angry, irritable and also feel embarrassed.

All said and done though, the media and all the famous commentators are making a big hue and cry for no reason. Shahrukh Khan may be some kind of God in India and his fans may think he's the best thing that happened to the world since sliced bread, but at the end of the day, when the general population has to go through these grueling procedures then why does Shahrukh Khan have to be excused? Just because he is famous and the perks should include not being questioned or interrogated by authorities? Slightly ridiculous in my opinion.

And keeping aside this drama, the biggest question is why does such a prestigious Ivy League institution in the US like Yale think an Indian film actor deserves a Chubb Fellowship? That is seriously a little beyond me. Is it because the Ambani's have "connections" and they go around getting Shahrukh awards and fellowships so that his fragile ego can remain boosted constantly considering that recently everyone thinks he is going through a serious mid-life crises? Or was this a way to promote their darling daughter at Yale? All this looks so dodgy and I cannot believe that such renowned acknowledgements are given away without any sense or justification...😕

Totally agree with the first paragraph.
However, apart from a few crazy fans, I do not think the media hue and cry is about an exemption for SRK, but more about the implications of this issue for everyone else. At least, I have been watching the coverage on NDTV 24/7 and they have not been saying that he deserves an exemption because he is SRK.
As for your third para, I think merit has little to do with it. Most prestigious universities select random people for awards, sometimes you know they are random, sometimes you don't. In this case, one could tell this was random.

Yeh, well I'm not very aware of what Indian news channels are making out of this but reading people like Shabana Aazmi making absolutely STUPID comments like getting US authorities iPads so they can look up Shahrukh Khan seems to imply that they believe SRK should be exempted from these checks because he is oh-the-big-shot-Indian-superstar.

I honestly find the criteria used to select the recipients of these awards very questionable. Maybe there is some genuine merit based on which SRK was selected but the involvement of the Ambanis just makes it look very dodgy again to me. And again considering SRK's fetish for awards and how the top bosses in India will do anything to please these stars, I really have lingering doubts on how genuine the selection was.

It always happens when I come to America. Whenever I start feeling too arrogant about myself I take a trip to America."

Lmao! That's funny. 😆
