Agent Vinod - Bring your brains to theaters

While of late style and technique has seen a manifold increase in Bollywood, filmmakers are also pushing the boundary when it comes to challenging the audience. Yes, there are escapist films being made (and loved as well). However there are filmmakers who are aspiring to merge hardcore commercial cinema with elements that require one to think hard and grasp the context of a scene rather than being spoon fed. 'Agent Vinod' is an example of one such cinema. Though there is always a risk element associated with such endeavours, Saif Ali Khan and Sriram Raghavan seem to have taken a conscious call in this direction.

One has to be very attentive while watching 'Agent Vinod', especially its first half. There are country settings that change every 10 minute while newer characters are also introduced at a rapid pace. It is in fact difficult to keep track of which character is doing what, where and in which time zone. Now while a section of audience is expected to grasp such a challenge with open arms, those used to getting entertained in an effortless manner are bound to feel a little restless.

This means that while the prologue is set in Afghanistan, the film jumps from Russia to Morocco and a couple of other countries at an alarming pace. It is hard work for a viewer to keep track of all the proceedings and with Agent Vinod (Saif Ali Khan) crossing path with a mysterious woman (Kareena Kapoor), an ISI official (Shahbaaz Khan), an underworld kingpin (Ram Kapoor), a business tycoon (Dhritiman Saha), a Colonel (Adil Hussain) and not to forget, a gang-lord (Prem Chopra), there is too much happening too soon.

In the middle of this all, there are quite a few intriguing elements thrown in which means the guessing game continues to be on. The real motive is also disclosed in the middle of the first half and with the plot firmly established; you look forward to the chapters unfolding at a feverish pace. However you are made to wait for a while before the real fun ensues in the second half.

The second half is quite fast paced though and with the focus more on joining the dots instead of introducing the newer ones, Sriram gets it just right for the audience to be thoroughly entertained. One such instance is a shoot out sequence set in a hotel that is canned entirely in a single shot with 'Raabta' playing in the background, hence bearing a clear Quentin Tarantino influence. There are subtle touches of Hitchcock thrown in as well while a few thrilling moments remind one of films like 'The Great Gambler' and 'Teesri Manzil', what with Sriram's love for retro background music in play all over again.

It is primarily due to the second half of the film, especially with an epilogue that strikes just when one thought that the film had ended (on a surprisingly low note), that one gets a sense of 'paisa vasool' affair. One does wish though that the VFX were a lot better in this part of the film. It seems like a rushed job and that is all the more glaring because otherwise the film has a very rich look right through its two and a half hours duration. In fact one has to commend the cinematographer to have tried different colour palettes for various countries, hence bringing in a sense of authenticity.

As Agent Vinod, Saif does quite well and literally lives and breathes the character right through the film's duration. He is just apt for the role and never once does he go overboard. Kareena's role doesn't demand any histrionics from her and she fits the bill.

With 'Agent Vinod' not really set in an escapist world, Sriram and Saif have ensured that it doesn't turn out to be a frivolous outing. They establish the film as a cerebral affair for a good duration and though it does come with it's own pros and cons, at least one can't accuse them of making a film where one is required to leaves brains at home.

Review: Agent Vinod

Film: Agent Vinod

Director: Sriram Raghavan

Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Adil Hussain, Prem Chopra, Shahbaz Khan

Rating: ***

"Yaadon ki baarat disturb karne ke liye sorry," says Agent Vinod (Saif Ali Khan) to a teary-eyed Dr Iram Bilal (Kareena Kapoor), who has returned to homeland Pakistan (after being away for 15 years). Pakistan is just another country as they inch closer to cracking a terror plot. The lines are among the roughly three or four chuckle-worthy scenes that the otherwise chic (appearance wise) yet scraggly (plot wise) Agent Vinod has to offer.

Espionage tales know no boundaries and locations the exotic the better. Agent Vinod is no different. Afghanistan. Russia. Morocco. Pakistan. UK. New Delhi. A Research & Analysis Wing (RAW) officer, Agent Vinod is on a mission to stop an impending nuclear war.

The premise of the film and the potency of Agent Vinod is established in the beginning with an introductory (not to mention pointless) gun battle in Afghanistan. Every new country has a new lead, more sinister faces than the first one and clue to what next. David Kazaan (Prem Chopra), Colonel (Adil Hussain), Abu Nazer (Ram Kapoor) waltz in and out of the film.

For those interested in the story, the plot is simple. There's a bomb that will inevitably explode and kill several Indians (it's convenient considering our population). Agent Vinod must stop that. While at it, he must fall in love, so he has a purpose to seek revenge. Anything more and we step into spoiler territory.

Director Sriram Raghavan (Ek Hasina Thi, Johnny Gaddar) delivers a neat package, a suave lead hero slogging it out in picture-perfect locations, packing punches here and there, zooming off on sexy bikes, sexier cars and finally a copter, all in a day's work. Saif looks and acts the part like a boss, his unwavering focus and diligence thoroughly a treat to watch. In comparison, Kareena becomes an uneven ally thanks to misplaced expressions. Cheesy conversations between them take away from the built-up severity. Adil Hussain as Colonel stands out for an understated yet impressive performance.

Written by Raghavan and Arijit Biswas, Agent Vinod is fairly engaging, if not memorable. The dialogue is passable but works only because of Saif. Pooja Ladha Surti's editing is slick, but the length is repulsive. One question sticking out like a sore thumb is: Why didn't Agent Vinod shoot dead Colonel in the basement when he clearly could? This could have magically cut the film by an hour and a half. Pointers to a sequel are shamelessly exposed, so no surprises if an announcement to the effect is soon made.

Technically, the film is as polished as our refined hero. Daniel B George's background score provides the perfect setting for a suspense-thriller, while Pritam's music (okay, let's forget all those plagiarism charges for a minute) aids the existence of the love angle. Rabtais beautiful, while Dil Mera Muft Ka and Pungi are a tad annoying. The fight sequence set toRabta is exceptionally executed. The murder of Boney M's Rasputin is unforgivable.

Agent Vinod is smartly put together and works because of Saif. That is enough reason for you to go watch it.

3/5

B.O. update: 'Agent Vinod' decent at plexes, dull at single screens

By Taran Adarsh, March 23, 2012 - 15:54 IST
The much-awaited AGENT VINOD had a shaky, uneven start at the ticket window. Generally, big-budget action films are known to start with a bang, but the opening of this Saif - Kareena starrer ranged from decent [at plexes] to ordinary/dull [at single screens]. The evening and night shows are expected to be better, but the film will have to muster impressive numbers on Saturday and Sunday so as to post a robust figure over the weekend.

The reports are extremely mixed, with a good section of the audience liking it, while an equally strong faction disliking the film.

hardly surprising considering how dull and boring the promos were. I guess their ''huge'' star appeal and celebrity weren't able to to save this one from sinking. Saif should have promoted this with kareena from the beginning, instead of promoting it on his own, we all know what kind of effect Saif Ali Khan's mug has on people.
