These are all successful SOLO films starring south indian actors. So its a myth that people who watch Hindi films don't like to see a south indian male lead in them. This will again be proved wrong as and when the Zanjeer remake releases.

The fact is they weren't interested and besides that in an unbelievable fashion their south indian career saw a slump during the same time and hence they couldn't give it another try in Hindi films. I can say about Chiranjeevi and Venkatesh in this regard. Chiranjeevi post aaj ka gundaraaj had only 1 out right success till 95 and had to take a break for an year because of that, so that he could re-think about his choices. He was back to his winning ways after the gap and never ever thought of a Hindi film again.

Kamal Hasan did not like the work that was being done back then in Hindi films and he left it in 85. He was successful back then and could easily have been a big star[ if he wasn't already one] had he relocated himself to Hindi films completely. And he would have done that had 80's been like today and he had interesting work to do.

Ironically Rajnikanth had the most of number of films for a south actor with least success and his few success too were multi starrers. Its another matter that most of his films were bad.

So the bottomline is good films work and bad films don't. In fact for a south star its easy to do a film in Hindi if THEY WANT TO[like Rana and Charan now]. And they do it too but only for a change, they don't seriously pursue or plan a career in Hindi films. Some consider it as a bad omen and fear that it would have catastrophic effect on their career in south 😲

Wasnt Diganth supposed to make his debut in BW? There was some news that Prachi Desai was being cast for it? He looks chocolate boyish and would be right for young roles.

There is a reverse sexism too. North Indian women really sought after in South India. Maybe having a fair and lovely NI girl romance someone who is one them gives SI a kick too.
And whole of India whether NI or SI gets a kick to see a White woman romance an Indian man.

The same applies to Hollywood also...the Hero will be a typical WASP types...blond hair, blue eyes and obviously white skinned, while the heroine can be the 'exotic' kinds, these days, Hollywood seems to get a kick out of getting pretty looking Chinese women to star as a side-kick to the hero if not the actual female lead...
When did we last see a big film with a heroine being white and the male lead someone from Asia or Africa?
This not just applies to the human race, but beyond also! In Avataar, the hero is a white guy while the girl is some sort of alien!😆
@Somz...Mamooty's real name is Mohaamad Kutty...typical Keralite Muslim name!
@Guess_who...please, please, please don't compare Surya to Uday Chopra! Have you seen any of Surya's films? That guy is an amazing actor...as talented and versatile as Aamir Khan...it was no wonder that Aamir literally copied every expression and action from the Original Gajini...that was the impact of Surya's acting!

@Poppy: Good point about HW. I remember now reading somewhere that you never see a African American man and White American woman romance in films.
About AK IMO he has great script sense but an overrated actor.

Surya was Awesome in Ghajani... Though I barely understand Tamil,I loved that movie. But the end was very violent ..They toned it down for Hindi version.

No idea about Diganth.. But his kannada movie Gaalipata was good.

Shreya, it is such an irony, that when Aamir was doing some of the best films of his career, he was totally underrated as a star and also as an actor...especially because SRK's ascendant was on the rise and Aamir was seen as the hero for the 'classes' without any mass appeal.
And now, when he is perhaps the biggest superstar in India (alongside Salman), he is being touted as the God of acting, when in reality, some of his recent films have not really been upto his own standards!
But in comparison to others, I still believe that Aamir is an amazing actor, with ofcourse, a great script-sense and some wicked marketing skills! But yes, the genuine artist in him is not there anymore...no wonder, it shows in the quality of work he is doing these days!

Aamir is definitely better than MOST others. SRK can also act well. He truly does love cinema. But that side of him RARELY comes out. 😆
Actually most famous actors like Big B, Rajnikanth have done good acting jobs in their careers. But the public remembers them more for their commercially successful movies.

he was a supporting actor at that time.. though Galipatta was very good.. I also liked Dignath's movies as a main lead Manasare, Pancharangi and I have heard his latest release Prijatha is doing a great business..
