BEATING THE BIG C: (Left) Maninee De Misra, Usha Joshi and Manasi Joshi Roy at Tata Memorial Hospital's V Care Cancer Survivors' Day event; Manasi meets with a patient
She was there to spread hope and sunshine in the lives of the inmates of the hospital — which she did. But in the course of it, however, she was left with an expensive loss — her diamond ring.

On Friday, telly star Manasi Joshi Roy (the former Kkusum), along with her mother Usha Joshi (a former Gujarati theatre actress) visited the wards and OPD at Tata Memorial Hospital, Parel, as part of the V Care Cancer Survivors' Day.

V Care is an emotional support group for cancer patients and their families. Actress Maninee De Misra was also present (see box).

Called the hospital

While interacting with inmates and distributing gifts, Manasi's diamond ring slipped off her hand; she realised she'd lost it while on her way back home, and immediately called up the authorities to inform them.

Says the actress, "Yes, the ring slipped off somewhere in the hospital. It was a diamond ring. But to talk about a lost ring is extremely flippant, considering the cause we went there for. The visit was such a humbling experience; we all talk about the problems we face in our lives but it is nothing compared to what they have to undergo."

The actress says the only reason she called up the hospital authorities was, "just in case they had found a ring, they would know who the owner was."

No sentimental value

After her call, the hospital was combed, but no ring was found. So maybe the ring slipped off her finger somewhere else, either on her way to the hospital or on her way back?

"The ring came off when I was in the hospital," says Manasi. "It did not have any sentimental value, so it is no big deal. It's okay; I have forgotten about it."

When we checked with Vandana Gupta, founder and chairperson of V Care, she was reluctant to divulge information about the ring episode. "We have a lot of celebrities extending a helping hand and visiting the hospital premises as part of V Care initiatives. I don't think the ring aspect needs to be brought in."

But after some persuasion, Gupta admitted that Manasi had called them to check about her missing ring. "Yes, she did call to tell us about her missing ring, so that if anyone found it, we knew who it belonged to."
Meanwhile, Manasi's ring is still missing.
