A solid upbringing helps...
I credit it to my solid upbringing. Believe me a solid upbringing helps. We (my brothers Luv & Kush and I) have been brought up like regular kids. We were not made to feel like we were star kids. We never dropped names. I would travel to school and college by rickshaws and train. We've been taught the importance of hard work and money, spending and saving, as any other person. And most importantly I've been taught to treat success and failure equally.
I've also been taught not to forget my roots no matter where life takes me.
With the grace of God and the blessings of my parents, my career is going fairly smooth. Joker, Rowdy Rathore, Race, Kick, Dabangg-2; I'm taking each day as it comes. There's not much to cope with because I've learnt from my father over the years. There were times when He would be shooting for 3 films at a time. This is nothing compared to that. I enjoy my work immensely so right now even this feels like less!!
And though Race has me in a glamorous avatar, the do's and don't were made pretty clear before signing the film which we already discussed before. I obviously know the requirements of the film as far as costumes go. I've always maintained I have to be comfortable in what I wear so as to not look uncomfortable on screen. There is this misconception that a person can be glamorous only by showing skin. Not true.

"Saree over mini skirt! That's the way I like it''With great success comes with great responsibility.
Definitely. With success comes the responsibility of maintaining that success and sustaining all the hard work that went into achieving it. Being successful or being in the limelight also puts you in a position where to some extent you are an extension of your fans, of society, of your family etc. It's not just you at stake anymore.
My decision to dress more conservatively than others, not to kiss and do certain type of scenes is a very personal thing. It's something that I have not been brought up with and something I believe should not change because of a change in my profession. What is the point of doing something that I'm not comfortable with at the cost of it affecting my performance? For so long our movies have survived without it. There are people open to doing it so my not wanting to do it will not affect anyone. It's not just some bandwagon I would jump on to. I believe in being true to my values and principles.
How will make a niche for myself when others are more open in their approach to their costumes and career options; well we are all different individuals with different things to give back to our audience. The audience appreciates each one of us for different things and that I believe is a niche in itself. When I could enter the industry in a saree when everyone else opted for a mini skirt, I'm sure I can carve a niche too.

Fashionable forever
I couldn't have asked for a better debut than one opposite Salman Khan. He has taught me a lot. Though I'm pretty excited about my film Dabanng, I do miss being part of the fashion world now. After doing fashion designing, I started off as an usher at the Lakme Fashion Week. Then I went on to assist designer duo Dev R Neil and later even walked the ramp for them.
Now I won't be part of any of the fashion weeks, but yes, I'll go to watch the shows put up by my friends. I used to be at the back stage earlier, now I'll occupy the front rows!
