Yet another sequel of a well-liked franchise makes it to cineplexes; this one's helmed by Indra Kumar, the King of Melodrama. The challenge evidently lies in making DOUBLE DHAMAAL far more engaging, compelling and amusing than the first in this series. Right from DIL, his directorial debut, to DHAMAAL, his last outing, Indra Kumar has integrated a generous dose of light moments in all his films, irrespective of the genre. And he's got it right most of the times!

The four jokers [Arshad, Riteish, Javed, Aashish] reunite to cause a comic riot in the much-anticipated follow-up DOUBLE DHAMAAL. DHAMAAL was a laugh-riot and was, in fact, one of the earlier films that gave an impetus to the trend of attempting madcap entertainers.

Write your own movie review of Double Dhamaal
A word of caution, though. It's outrageous and ridiculous... yet extremely funny and hugely entertaining. As we are well aware, the sole motive of a motion picture of the DOUBLE DHAMAAL variety is to entertain the viewer. Such nutty escapades are not fashioned to appease or mollify a miniscule minority of those viewers who are not in sync with the sensibilities and receptivity of a majority of moviegoers. DOUBLE DHAMAAL is also not for those who loathe and abominate desi masala movies and label them 'brain dead' or 'cheesy, low-brow humor'. All Time Blockbusters like DABANGG, GOLMAAL 3, even 3 IDIOTS and GHAJINI and more recently READY were not spared by the skeptics, but the audience mandate proved the inflexible cynics wrong and how! Very evidently, DOUBLE DHAMAAL is targeted at the massive number of spectators who relish zany capers.

Packed with hilarious moments, amusing gags, witty one-liners and uproarious situational comedy, DOUBLE DHAMAAL lives up to its name and is in a league and genre of its own. It's double the fun and double the guffaws this time. The humor here is poles apart when compared to the MUNNABHAI or GOLMAAL series, yet the objective of each of those films has been to woo lovers of desi masala movies.

DOUBLE DHAMAAL works for varied reasons...
One, the jokes and gags are of a much enhanced quality. A few clutch-my-tummy-and-cackle situations are juxtaposed with the regular loud jesting without a glitch.
Two, the presence of the glam quotient spices up the proceedings [DHAMAAL was an all-male film]. In fact, both Mallika and Kangna are an integral part of the plot.
Three, it appears superior in terms of visuals and also production design. The dazzling locales of Macau are pure eye-candy.
Most significantly, the highpoint of DOUBLE DHAMAAL isn't its script alone. Rather, it is also the imposing chemistry between the boys.

As a matter of fact, we've become so habituated to crudeness in the name of hilarity that we've forgotten to value uncontaminated comedies. Which is why I want to roll out the carpet for DOUBLE DHAMAAL, which is a genuinely witty, plot-driven comedy. Sure, there are few double entendres, but they aren't detestable or distasteful. In fact, DOUBLE DHAMAAL is so asinine and goofy that you might want to forewarn people that they may fall off their chairs, guffawing at the most banal jokes.

All said and done, DOUBLE DHAMAAL is an epidemic of laughter which has all it takes to take the franchise to the next level.

The four good-for-nothing jokers from DHAMAAL -- Roy [Ritesh Deshmukh], Adi [Arshad Warsi], Manav [Jaaved Jaaferi] and Boman [Aashish Chaudhry] -- are back again! They are still as stupid and useless as before. Hard work is a strict no and the only work they have ever done in their lives is to lie down on their backside and dream about a good life where they have everything without doing anything!

And then suddenly they spot their enemy -- the corrupt Insp. Kabir Nayak [Sanjay Dutt]. But he's no longer a cop and instead of chasing crooks, he's chasing money -- driving a Merc, has a posh office and a lavish villa. The four mad caps are green with envy and decide that come what may, by hook or by crook, they will share Kabir's good fortune. And so they blackmail Kabir into making them his business partners.

What they don't know is that soon their dreams are going to turn into nightmares because Kabir has his own hidden agenda, only shared by his sultry girlfriend Kamini [Mallika Sherawat] and sister Kiya [Kangna Ranaut]. And so starts a game of one-upmanship, with both sides having tricks up their sleeves and where sundry characters like Batabhai [Satish Kaushik] and King of Casino, Bonzola, turn up to make their life miserable.

DOUBLE DHAMAAL sets in motion with a speedy recap of the first part, to facilitate those who may have watched it but don't recollect the film vividly or those who haven't watched the first part and are clueless about the characters. That helps in getting acquainted with the basic plot and characters at the very outset. In fact, the film takes off from exactly the same point where the prequel concluded.

DOUBLE DHAMAAL works primarily because it's an ingeniously written film that moves briskly from one gag to another, leaving no moment in between to contemplate. You may trace the jokes to some films of yore, but the manner in which these yarns are unified in the airtight screenplay [Tushar Hiranandani] merits an ovation.

Since the expectations are monstrous from this flick, Indra Kumar seems focused on meeting those expectations. The perfect execution of the script by the director combined with the brilliant comic timing of the actors assures you that the franchise is in safe hands. Also, I'd like to make a note of the witty, brilliant dialogues [Farhad-Sajid] that spice up the proceedings well. Music has always played an integral part in Indra Kumar's movies and though DHAMAAL didn't have a great soundtrack, DOUBLE DHAMAAL has two sprightly and infectious tracks [Anand Raaj Anand] that compliment the movie well -- the title track and 'Jalebi Bai'. Aseem Bajaj's cinematography is top notch. He captures the grandiose look on celluloid splendidly.

This comic-and-wit contest is so intense that it is unfeasible to single out any one actor as the scene-stealer. Arshad, Riteish, Jaaved and Aashish are no aliens to tomfoolery and each one of them carries off their scenes with aplomb. Each of them is a born-laugh-raiser, actually. Riteish is simply outstanding. It won't be wrong to state that this is his career-best work. Arshad's comic timing is amazing and it's evident yet again. Jaaved is super. It's a tough part to handle and he does it with amazing ease. Aashish is a complete revelation; he brings the house down with his act. The usage of prosthetics grants a lot of definition to this outrageously comical character. In fact, the four actors co-ordinate well to make the goings-on look flawless and unblemished. Also, the various getups and makeup of all the actors deserve a special mention.

Just as it's impossible to imagine GOLMAAL without Ajay, it's hard to think of DHAMAAL without Sanju. He's not so much a part of the comedy as he is the catalyst for much of it... and he's the best man for the job. Both Mallika and Kangna have key roles to play and don't come across as mere props. Mallika is excellent and this film will make people realize that she can handle comic roles with effortlessness. Kangna is equally competent and her scenes with Riteish are sure to be noticed. Satish Kaushik is in top form. In fact, he's bound to walk away with ceetees and taalis whenever he appears... also towards the end. Zakir Hussain is adequate.

On the whole, DOUBLE DHAMAAL is a seriously hilarious movie that lives up to its title -- it's double dhamaal all the way. If you are not looking for wisdom and rationale in a light-hearted entertainer, I am sure you will savor this carnival of claptrap. Sometimes, a good laugh is all you need to make your day. Try not to miss this one, it pledges hilarity in abundance... Carrying a positive vibe and a high degree of expectation, the film is tipped to be 'hot' amongst viewers and is likely to embark on a strong initial at the box-office. Here's hoping that the first half of 2011 closes on a dhamaal note with DOUBLE DHAMAAL.

Slapstick humour

Story : The gang of Dhamaal -- Adi (Arshad Warsi), Manav (Jaaved Jafri), Boman (Ashish Chowdhury), Roy (Riteish Deshmukh) are back. Once again they have just one purpose in life: to get rich, any which way. This time the plan entails duping their tormentor Kabir (Sanjay Dutt) by messing up his personal and professional life.

Movie Review: First things first, part one was better. It was stupid, but it did have lots of goofy humour and fun. The sequel is more stupid than funny, nevertheless there are enough moments to keep the clock ticking.

The entire film operates as one extended con game where most of the chaos is kicked up by the loser foursome of Arshad, Jaaved, Riteish and Ashish. It's one of the most dysfunctional bunch of friends in Bollywood, where each seems to be more stupid than the other. Yet, when they pool in their mental deficiencies, they do manage to create some madcap moments on screen.

In the first half, they try to ingratiate themselves with Sanjay Dutt in order to win a partnership in his firm. And the fact the he has a svelte girlfriend likeMallika Sherawat and a siren sister like Kangana Ranaut motivates them further. But when they realize the tycoon has put them in a soup by peddling gutter water in the middle of Mumbai as oil, they know it's time for revenge. Specially since they are being hounded by the local gangster (Satish Kaushik) who is baying for their blood. Act two is all about vengeance and one upmanship between the foursome and Sanjay Dutt.

This one's definitely not for the fastidious, choosy viewer but for those who don't mind losing it for a bit, Double Dhamaal works like an average Bollywood comedy. Performance-wise, it's one big circus with the guys hogging most of the limelight. The girls -- Mallika and Kangana -- are mere confetti.

If we go by the last scene of DOUBLE DHAMAAL, DHAMAAL 3 is on the cards. Looking at DOUBLE DHAMAAL, we hope it doesn't happen.

Talking about sequels, you will agree that making a sequel is always a challenge. The expectations are high and the comparisons to the original are inevitable. There is a pressure to at least be at par, if not better than the earlier part. DHAMAAL was wacky and hilarious at the same time. Even the characters and their quirky traits were enjoyable. Now, in DOUBLE DHAMAAL, the same characters are rudderless due to the lack of a coherent script.

Incase you don't remember, the initial reels of the film give a quick recap of the previous part. Roy (Ritesh Deshmukh), Adi (Arshad Warsi), Manav (Jaaved Jaaferi) and Boman (Aashish Chaudhry) had donated their money to charity. Two years have passed and they are still waiting for an easy way to make big money. However, unlike their precarious condition, Inspector Kabir Nayak (Sanjay Dutt) has made a huge transition (we're not told how). He drives a Mercedes and has a swanky office. That's not all. He also has two lovely ladies - Kamini (Mallika Sherawat) and sister Kiya (Kangna Ranaut) for company. Looking at his opulent lifestyle, our four guys get envious and decide to dupe him. But their devious tricks turn futile as Kabir is able to outsmart them every time. Who will have the last laugh?

The first thing that hits you while watching DOUBLE DHAMAAL is that it's too loud. Each and every character is screaming and the gags are over the top. Apart from a few sequences that make you laugh, majority of it is a lot of codswallop. While DHAMAAL had a good plot, DOUBLE DHAMAAL falls way short in terms of the story, despite moving from Mumbai to Macau. The narrative does improve in the second half, but it's simply not enough. Randomly placed songs add on to your woes.

There are some cheeky digs taken on films like PEEPLI [LIVE], GUZAARISH and TAARE ZAMEEN PAR. Wonder how some of the vulgar gags and dialogues got a green signal from our Censor Board.

Double Dhamaal Set For Good Start

Thursday 23rd June 2011 21.00 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Double Dhamaal is looking to get a good start at the box office. The film has managed an advance, it may not be like Ready but having 5-10% tickets sold at most multiplexes for the weekend sold prior to release is a very good result for a film which does not have a huge smash hit song or a superstar in the cast.

The bookings for Friday are even more encouraging with some theatres showing a very good turn out. Double Dhamaal is likely to have a very strong day first. So far Ready has grossed 13.33 crore nett on day one and Yamla Pagla Deewana 7.63 crore nett.

Double Dhamaal has a chance of beating the Yamla Pagle Deewana figure and recording the second best first day of the year.

Double Dhamaal Review

June 24th, 2011 by Komal Nahta

Double Dhamaal Plot: Cop-turned-conman Sanjay, his girlfriend, Mallika, and his sister, Kangna, cheat Arshad, Jaaved, Ritesh and Aashish into getting Rs. 250 crore from a don (Satish Kaushik) as investement in a plot of land which is supposed to be rich in crude oil. The trio then runs off to Macau with the money. Conned, the four guys – Arshad, Jaaved, Ritesh and Aashish – plan to take revenge by conning Sanjay and group back. What happens then? Read the full review for the rest.

Star cast: Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi, Jaaved Jaffrey, Ritesh Deshmukh, Aashish Chowdhary, Mallika Sherawat, Kangna Ranaut, Satish Kaushik, Zakir Hussain.

What's Good: The punch-filled dialogues that will appeal to the masses; the good performances of some of the actors.

What's Bad: The unintersting story; the loopholes in the screenplay; the absence of hit music.

Verdict: 'Double Dhamaal' will not scroe well enough as it will appeal to the masses more than the classes, and the single-screen audiences more than the multiplex-going audiences.

Loo break: Not really.

Watch or Not?: Watch it for the funny dialogues and some hilarious comic sequences.

Spoiler alert! You may want to skip directly to the Script Analysis below.

Reliance Entertainment and Maruti International's Double Dhamaal (UA) is a comedy. Sequel toDhamaal, it is about the four friends – Manav (Jaaved Jaffrey), Adi (Arshad Warsi), Roy (Ritesh Deshmukh) and Boman (Aashish Chowdhary) – and their encounter with Kabir (Sanjay Dutt) who is no longer a police officer.

Kabir is a conman in the guise of a rich businessman now, having resigned from the police force. Kamini (Mallika Sherawat) is Kabir's beloved and a partner in his con game. Kiah (Kangna Ranaut) is the third partner and she is Kabir's sister.

The four friends happen to spot Kabir and they hatch a plan to con him so that they can make money out of him, little realising that he is himself a conman. Anyway, Kabir manages to sell a government-owned plot of land to an underworld don-turned-tantrik, Baba Batanand Swami a.k.a. Bata Bhai (Satish Kaushik), by showing that the land has crude oil reserves. For the transaction, he tells Adi, Manav, Roy and Boman to deal with the don. Once the amount of Rs. 250 crore is received from the don as sale price of the plot of land, Kabir, Kamini and Kiah disappear with the money, leaving a fuming don who soon realises that he neither has right over the plot of land nor is it rich in crude oil reserve nor has he access to his Rs. 250 crore because the foursome who, in any case, don't have the money to return him, have also disappeared.

Fearing for their lives, the four friends take the help of Mohsinbhai (Zakir Hussain) to flee the country. They land in Macau where they learn that Kabir is settled in the city. Thirsting for revenge, they try to gain entry, in disguises, into the life of Kabir who now runs a casino. Their aim is to win the confidence of Kabir, Kamini and Kiah, and then seek revenge by making away with his wealth. On his part, Kabir is trying to lay his hands on $1,000 crore from a local of Macau, Johny Bonzela, by defrauding him but he doesn't want to look like he has defrauded Bonzela.

Do Adi, Manav, Roy and Boman succeed in seeking revenge on Kabir? Or does Kabir con them once again? What about Bonzela whom Kabir is looking to con? And what about Baba Batanand Swami?

Double Dhamaal Review – Script Analysis

The film tries to encash on the 'Dhamaal' brand but in doing so, the story and screenplay writer (Tushar Hiranandani) has concentrated on gags and punches rather than an interesting script. In fact, the story about one-upmanship is predictable and the screenplay is full of gaping holes. Probably, the biggest drawback of the script is that the person from whose view point things are being narrated keeps changing as per the convenience of the situation. No harm in that except that this becomes an anomaly because when the focus shifts, the audience realises that some characters in the drama have done what could've been easily avoided. For instance, when the four friends come on a revenge mission to Macau, it is understandable that they would first and foremost try to win Kabir's confidence and for that, they have to proceed in a round-and-about fashion as they are in disguises. But why Kabir, Kamini and Kiah play along is not explained. For, here were four scapegoats willing to do anything for Kabir – and Kabir, instead of using them to befool Bonzela and fleece him of his $1,000 crore, was busy playing along. Wasn't Kabir in a hurry to first get control of the $1,000 crore? Why would he give even a minute extra to the foursome because what if any one of them got wind of his intention? If the writer would have us believe that Kabir was trying to make things as believable and as real as possible, that argument does not hold if only because, as stated earlier, the foursome was more than willing to do anything to win Kabir's confidence – and getting $1,000 crore from Bonzela would be readily acceptable as a job by the foursome. More so, because the foursome, in any case, wanted to seek revenge which they could by running away with the money, and Kabir could have them get the money by conning them into believing that they were, in the process, going to win his confidence, and as soon as they got the money by risking their own lives, Kabir could've had them cornered. Instead, Kabir himself asks Bonzela to invest $1,000 crore in his casino. If that is so, wouldn't the investor gun for Kabir to get his money back even if Kabir convinces him that the money is robbed by the foursome? Why would Bonzela go after the four and spare Kabir? This is just not explained but the fact is, this question crops up in the audience's mind. Probably, the biggest hole in the screenplay is: why would Kabir ask for the four friends to be brought to Macau for his next con job, when he has himself run away from them and fled the country (India) after getting them involved in a crime? The natural human instinct would be to stay away from the four because it doesn't require great intelligence to understand that they must be thirsting for Kabir's blood. After all, Kabir had defrauded Bata Bhai of Rs. 250 crore, no less, and had made it appear as if the four friends were the criminals. Does the writer want the audience to believe that Kabir couldn't have got four other idiots whom he could have made scapegoats of, for his casino deal in Macau and, therefore, wanted the same four friends to carry out the job? If so, the writer should have shown the compulsion for Kabir to want these and only these four friends. But the fact is, it may be difficult to get four intelligent men but not four idiots whom Kabir could've lured with money just as he lured the four friends in India in the Swami Batanand case. What's worse still is that after having the four friends transported to Macau, it is Kabir and only Kabir who strikes the deal with Bonzela. Why wouldn't Kabir make the foursome be at the forefront of the deal while himself remaining in the background so that he would never appear to be involved in the fraud? But the writer has no answer for this too.

Therefore, although the drama picks up after interval, the structure of the screenplay is so weak that other than the punch-filled dialogues, it doesn't hold much. This is the reason why the film would find more acceptance among the masses and the single-screen audiences than among the classes and the multiplex audiences. Also the pitch at which the characters in the film speak is so loud that it would get on the nerves of the classes. Besides, so much reliance is placed on coincidence in the drama that it is not funny.

Another example of the focus being shifted randomly: the four friends vow to seek revenge at interval point but what comes of that vow in the end is not what one is used to watching. After all, in the scheme of things, the foursome are the underdogs and, therefore, the heroes in the drama. Put differently, the writer was not clear whether Kabir was the hero or the group of four was the group of heroes.

What saves the screenplay to a fair extent are the punch-packed dialogues by Sajid-Farhad and the performances. The funny lines often evoke laughter even though the drama defies logic. Similarly, there are some chunks which bring the house down with laughter. Among such funny anecdotes are the portions of Baba Batanand Swami (his dialogues are also splendid), Roy's take-off on Sanjeev Kumar and other actors, the perpetually wrong timing of Manav's dim-witted questions, the gorilla sequence etc. The scene in which the four friends hide themselves from Swami Batanand by covering themselves in long overcoats and 'hanging' themselves on the wall will bring the house down with laughter.

The climax is not as funny as it ought to have been.

Double Dhamaal Review – Star Performances & Direction

Sanjay Dutt is fair. He looks okay after interval but too stocky in the first half. Jaaved Jaffrey plays the dim-witted Manav very ably. Arshad Warsi is also effective. Ritesh Deshmukh is excellent, especially when he mimics Sanjeev Kumar and other actors. Aashish Chowdhary is okay. Mallika Sherawat doesn't have a very substantive role. She is alright in what she does. Her dance on theJalebi bai song is sexy. Kangna Ranaut also gets limited scope; she is fairly good. Satish Kaushik is a veritable highlight. His acting is remarkable and his one-liners are very enjoyable. Zakir Hussain has been wasted but does make his presence felt.

Indra Kumar's direction is okay. He has concentrated on gags more than an arresting story to create comedy, which is hardly the most intelligent thing to do. Music (Anand Raaj Anand) is quite a letdown. Except for the Jalebi bai and the title songs (which is fair), the other numbers pass muster. Even the lyrics (Anand Raaj Anand and Mayur Puri) are nothing to shout about. Song picturisations (Ganesh Acharya and Remo D'souza) are okay. Background music could've been better. Aseem Bajaj's cinematography is eye-filling and brings out the richness of the Macau locations. Sets (Tanushree Sarkar and Dipankar Dasgupta) are good. Action scenes (Allan Amin) are fair. Sanjay Sankla's editing is reasonably sharp.

Double Dhamaal Review – Komal Nahta's Verdict

On the whole, Double Dhamaal is for the masses and the single-screen cinemas mainly. Considering its high cost (over Rs. 40 crore), it is not likely to prove a profitable venture even though the producers have made a killing from its satellite rights. If, by a stroke of good luck, the producers are able to break even, at least the distributors of the circuits, for which the producers have sold the rights, would end up being in the red because of the high prices they've paid.

Double Dhamaal Looks Set For Big First Day

Friday 24th June 2011 16.00 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Double Dhamaal looks set for a big first day tally as it had a good start at the multiplexes and the single screens have also started strongly.

The film is strong in all the major circuits where mass films score. Mumbai, CP Berar, CI and Rajasthan are all putting up good numbers while Delhi/UP and East Punjab are excellent.

West Bengal and South are weaker and giving average performance.

The film is looking to emerge a major success on the strength of its strong opening. The way the film has opened at the box office it would not be a surprise if the first day comes out be 8 crore nett which is a huge number for Double Dhamaal as it does not have smash hit music nor does does it have a big star.
