Ready Is Mind Boggling At Single Screens

Friday 3rd June 2010 15.30 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

The multiplexes opened bumper for Ready but single screens are even better. UP, Bihar, CP Berar, CI, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Saurashtra are simple mind boggling and practically 95-100% at most major screens in these areas. Surat, Rajkot, Lucknow, Kanpur, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Nagpur and Indore, all A centres had a phenomenal response at single screens.

The Mumbai multiplexes were not full this morning but they are never are due to spare capacity but single screens in Mumbai city opened to full houses. The West Bengal and Punjab single screens were not full at around 70-80%.

Delhi was strong as Liberty grossed 60,800 and Delite 16,660 both 100% for their 12.00 and 12.15 shows respectively.

As for comparisons with Dabangg which are inevitable, the opening is not as strong as Dabangg if we look at occupancies as Dabangg was practically 95-100% across the board apart from places like Mumbai city which hardly ever open while Ready has had a lower at opening at some places but it has a bigger release which means potential to gross even with lower occupancies. Also the small centres like Dehri, Kehda, Jhabu, Sarni etc are not as strong as Dabangg possibly due to the action factor in Dabangg.

Ready Review

June 3rd, 2011 by Komal Nahta

Salman Khan is in his element in the comic as well as dramatic & action scenes.

Ready movie Plot: Salman and Asin fall in love but he has to contend with her two tyrant and warring maternal uncles, each of who is trying hard to get her married off to his brother-in-law. Should you watch the film? Find out in the full review by Komal Nahta.

Business Rating: 3.5/5 stars

Star cast: Salman Khan, Asin Thottumkal, Paresh Rawal, Sharat Saxena, Akhilendra Mishra, Mahesh Manjrekar.

What's Good: The comedy post-interval; the music; Salman Khan and Paresh Rawal's acting; the emotional under-current of the comical drama.

What's Bad: The ordinary first half.

Verdict: READY will score at the box-office, thanks to a great start, super-hit music, Salman Khan and entertainment in a good dose.

Loo break: Not really.

Watch or not?: Yes, if you want to be entertained.

Sohail Khan Productions, T-Series, One Up Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. and Rawail Grandsons Entertainment & Software Pvt. Ltd.'s Ready (UA) is the story of do-gooder Prem (Salman Khan) and how he manipulates and wins over the hand of his beloved, Sanjana (Asin Thottumkal), in marriage.

Prem lives in Bangkok with his forgetful father (Mahesh Manjrekar), mother (Anooradha Patel), two paternal uncles (Manoj Pahwa and Manoj Joshi) and their wives. He has a heart of gold. Sanjana comes into his life, posing as Pooja who is a prospective bride for Prem, recommended by the family priest. Sanjana also lives in Bangkok and has, in fact, run away from her wedding. She is an orphan and has two maternal uncles (Sharat Saxena and Akhilendra Mishra). Each of her uncles is trying to get Sanjana married off to his brother-in-law. Sanjana approves of neither of the two prospective grooms and, therefore, runs away. The two uncles are greedy but can't see eye to eye. Sanjana wins over the hearts of Prem's family members but Prem and she are constantly at loggerheads. Slowly but surely, Prem and Sanjana fall in love.

The obstacle in the love story comes in the form of Sanjana's older uncle (Sharat Saxena) when he and his goons come and take her away with them. Meanwhile, Sanjana's to-be husband, who has come in search of her, has been seriously injured by Prem and is currently in coma in a hospital. Anyway, Prem now has to save Sanjana from the clutches of her uncle and also ensure that she is not forcibly married to any of the two brothers-in-law. He has to do all this without letting his identity be revealed and the good thing is that the only person who knows him is comatose. Prem hatches a plot and approaches the common chartered accountant, Baliram (Paresh Rawal), of the two uncles. He enters the houses of the two uncles in Bangkok, posing as the CA's assistant and nephew. He uses Baliram to entice the two uncles into forgetting about marrying their brothers-in-law to Sanjana and instead agreeing to get them married to the two daughters of very rich businessmen from London, K.K. Modi and B.K. Modi. Prem's parents pose as Mr. & Mrs. K.K. Modi while his younger uncle and aunt come as Mr. & Mrs. B.K. Modi. Again, using Baliram, Prem lays down conditions from the Modis for Sanjana's two uncles before they (Modis) can marry off their rich daughters to the brothers-in-law of the two uncles. In effect, Prem is trying to patch up the differences between the two uncles and tone them down and he has the whole-hearted support of the ladies of the two families in this because they (the ladies) are sick and tired of the authoritarian attitude of the two men and are not in favour of the family division. Prem's second (older) uncle poses as a bank representative, who has come to Bangkok to collect the bank's dues of Sanjana's late father, from Sanjana or her to-be in-laws. Sensing that they'd have to pay crores of rupees to the bank, the two greedy uncles immediately agree to the idea of not marrying their brothers-in-law to Sanjana. In any case, they have a bigger catch in the form of the daughters of the Modis.

Trouble erupts when the comatose husband-to-be comes out of coma, returns home and exposes the truth about Prem. What happens thereafter? Do the two uncles of Sanjana now go after Prem's life? What do they do to their CA? What happens to the family members of Prem when they stand exposed? The latter part of the film answers these questions.

Salman Khan shines in the second half; Asin Thottumkal is good but her expressions don't vary much.

Ready Review – Script Analysis

Remake of the Telugu Ready, the screenplay has been penned by Rajiv Kaul, Rajan Agarwal and Ikram Akhtar with script consultation by Salim Khan. The first half is good only in parts. The scenes between Prem and Sanjana when they quarrel with each other are hardly funny or even interesting. Also, the pace of the drama before interval is slow and there are several boring moments too.

The pace picks up immediately after interval and the comedy turns interesting, engaging and entertaining. The whole track of Prem and Baliram fooling the two uncles of Sanjana is very funny and will be enjoyed by the audience. The track of Prem trying to bring two warring families together is heart-warming and strikes for its nobility and will be loved by the families, not just in smaller centres but also in the cities.

Having said this, it must be added that there will be a smaller section of the audience which will get put off by the first half and may find the comical second half too loud and exaggerated. This small section of the audience may not approve of the film.

Dialogues by Farhad-Sajid and Nisar Akhtar are very appealing, again, more so post-interval. In the first half, even the dialogues, like the screenplay, are found lacking. But the dialogues in the second half elevate the drama at many places.

Ready Review – Star Performances & Direction

Salman Khan shines in the second half and is in his element in the comic as well as dramatic and action scenes. He seems disinterested in the first half but is in complete form after interval. His dances are totally mass-appealing. Asin Thottumkal is good but her expressions don't vary much. Paresh Rawal is extraordinary. He and Salman Khan complement each other wonderfully and together they create entertainment galore. Akhilendra Mishra is pretty effective. Sharat Saxena also plays his part well. Puneet Issar, as Sanjana's grandfather, performs ably. Mahesh Manjrekar does a fine job even though his habit of forgetting words doesn't create laughter as the same track has come in films earlier too. As his wife, Anooradha Patel is dignified. Manoj Pahwa and Manoj Joshi get limited scope but are good all the same. Sudesh Lahiri is fantastic and his entire track of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time is hilarious. Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgan, Arbaaz Khan, Chunkey Panday and Kangna Ranaut lend appealing star value in special appearances. Zarine Khan does not impress in her special appearance in a song-dance number because she doesn't dance gracefully. Mohit Baghel, as the school-going grandchild of the younger uncle of Sanjana, is first-rate and his comic track evokes laughter. As his swear-words-spewing mother, Eva Grover is lovely. Arya Babbar, Nikitin Dheer and Rajiv Kachroo fill the bill. Gargi Patel, Hemant Pandey, Mithilesh Chaturvedi, Jaswinder Gardner, Shilpa Mehta, Prachee Pathak, Pravina Deshpande, Kiran Ahuja, Shalini Sahuta and Kubraa Sait provide the required support.

Anees Bazmee's direction caters to the masses and the family audiences, for whom the film is meant. The classes may approve less of the loud comedy but the film will appeal to the youth, masses and families. Music is a major highlight of the film. 'Character dheela' (Pritam) and 'Dhinka chika' (Devi Shri Prasad) songs are super-hits and the picturisation of the latter song (two different picturisations at two different points in the film is a superb bonus) will have the audience going mad with joy. The other two songs (Pritam) are also good – the 'Humko pyar hua' is melodious and 'Meri ada bhi' has pace and energy. Song picturisations (Chinni Prakash and Raju Khan) are mass-appealing. Sunil Patel and Thomas Xavier's cinematography is very good. Sets (Rajat Poddar) are alright. Editing (Ritesh Soni) is quite nice. Action (Seeluem Pradit and Mahendra Verma) scenes are composed to provide thrills to the masses.

Ready Review – Komal Nahta's Verdict

On the whole, Ready has taken a flying start from North to South and East to West and, in addition, it has masala to keep the masses and the family audiences entertained and happy. The producers have already made a profit by selling the worldwide rights to one distributor. As for the worldwide distributor (who has paid a phenomenal price for the rights) as also the individual distributors who've acquired some of the territorial rights from the worldwide distributor (at truly fancy prices), well, even they will make a profit! Salman Khan, super-hit music, earth-shattering opening and lack of solid opposition for the next two-three weeks will all go a long way in ensuring that the cash registers ring very loudly.

Ready Review – Ready Movie Review – Ready Rating, Hindi Movie Review: Salman Khan is back after rocking the box office with his previous film Dabangg. This time he is Ready with a family entertainer which falls under the category of comedy/drama/family. Ready lacks Salman Khan's dose of action and people who go to theatres should be prepared for it. We review Ready for you…

Story:

Pooja aka Sanjana Singh (Asin) runs away from her evil uncles who want to steal all her properties by marrying her to either of their songs. She confronts with Prem (Salman Khan) and eventually they love each other. But Sanjana's uncles find her and take her away. Prem uses his brains and starts the bluff game. How he marries his girl by making her uncles realize their mistakes is the rest of the story.

Analysis:

Ready is a remake of Telugu hit movie with the same name. Ram, a rising hero played the lead role in it. Salman Khan, who is a superstar, chose to do this role after setting box office on fire with Danbangg. It would be hard for Salman's mass fans to see him in a sober role which hardly needs to flex his muscles. Especially it will be even harder to accept him in such an ineffective role after that iconic Chulbul Pandey act.

Adding to this director Anees Bazmee's lackluster screenplay in the first hour made Ready a boring fare. Salman tried his best to infuse life into it but only did in very few instances. Bazmee changed the first half scenes from the original to make it suit to the tastes of Bollywood audience. Although the original's first hour wasn't up to the mark it was engaging and in contrast to the second hour which helped big time.

Anees Bazmee tried to make Ready a fulltime entertainer by having too much family drama and so called entertainment in the first half. However, he missed a golden chance of giving the much needed action and mass masala to Salman fans by changing the scenes from the original. Bazmee should have stuck to the original and might have bettered it as he has a superstar at his service. Instead he tried to stick to his image of churning mindless comic capers and that didn't help for Ready's course. Most importantly he ruined the character of Paresh Rawal's which was played by Brahmanandam in the original. For Ready in Telugu this character is the heart and soul and Bazmee failed to understand it.

He retained most of the scenes from the original in second half and few of those worked too. Anees Bazmee tries too hard to make audiences laugh by including vulgar jokes which is absolutely not needed. He could have hired a good translator and translated all the good and neat jokes from the original. Ready, on a whole works only in parts. All the changes that the director brought in prove the fact that he is out of form at the moment.

Dhinka Chika and Character Dheela songs are the saving grace along with Salman's stunning screen presence. Few jokes here and there worked but Ready is just below the average mark as a wholesome film.

Performances:

Salman Khan is the reason for all the hype surrounding this film and he would be the only savior to make this film a hit or whatever it manages to collect. He did his part so well and used his sense of humor to light up the scenes. His dances in Dhinka Chika are simply superb. Asin looked pale in many scenes and okay in few. An actress of Kareena's caliber is needed to play this role. Paresh Rawal is good but the director didn't use his talent properly. There is a horde of artists and everyone did their bit.

Tehnicalities:

Devi Sri Prasad rocked his Bollywood debut with his Dhinka Chika the new chant of B town. Pritam is the main music composer and he is good with his Character Dheela number. Background score is too loud. Dialogues by Farhad are just okay. Sunil Patel's cinematography is up to the mark. Most of the film is done indoors and even then the cinematographer managed to pull it off with colorful cinematography. Art department played their part in doing so.

Anees Bazmee's humor sparkled here and there. Putting the interval card as 'Pee Break' which later changes to 'Tee break' is good. Also the timing in the scene in climax chase sequence where a bike runs over a goon's leg is hilarious. Bazmee should have stayed loyal to the original script for better results.

Plus Points:

- Salman Khan
- Comedy in the second hour
- Dhinka Chika, Character Dheela songs

Minus points:

- Boring first hour
- No mass masala elements
- Action part is too weak for a Salman film

Final Word: Ready – Not a tailor made film for Salman. But he tries his best to 'fit' in.

Box office predictions:

Ready should open to mind boggling collections all over. Thanks to Salman and the Dabangg factor. Ready will have a great first weekend and from then on it has to survive on the family audience. Ready is certainly not blockbuster Dabangg to Salman and not a disastrous Thank You from Anees Bazmee either.

Ready Movie Review

Friday, 03 June 2011 16:30 Nikita Kapoor

Directed by: Anees Bazmee

Produced by: Rajat Rawail, Bhushan Kumar, Nitin Manmohan, Kishan Kumar, Sohail Khan
Story by: Gopimohan
Starring: Salman Khan, Asin, Arya Babbar, Paresh Rawal, Puneet Issar, Mahesh Manjrekar, Akhilendra Mishra
Rating: **
The movie Ready is about Salman Khan (Prem Kapoor) who meets Asin Thottumkal (Sanjana Singh) who is running from her con Mamas. Both the mamas can't see each other eye to eye and in order to get her property both of them want Sanjana to marry their respective relatives.
Image: Ready Movie Theatrical Release Poster
Followed by initial small fights Prem and Sanjana fall in love and because of street smart Prem, Sanjana also gets to fulfil her mother's last wish which is to end the fight between two mamas. Though the story sounds simple however when you actually see the movie you understand how intermingled and tangled the story really is. Not that we ever expected logic from Ready as it's an Anees Bazmee direction, still comedy is what we were expecting but couldn't get any.
Ready neither has Wanted like action nor Dabangg's hilarity, though like any other comic genre film, Ready as well have some laughable moments but they are far in between and very few. The story has been dragged and Salman's dialogue's doesn't leave much of an impact.
Performance per se, Salman was his usual self (which is good) and Asin also managed to do justification to her role, however based on a dheela script just like the wordings of song 'Character Dheela' I really doubt if Ready will be able to stand on the huge expectations riding on it. We at FilmiTadka give it 2 out of 5 stars. By the way don't forget to download Ready Movie Wallpapers.

Director: Anees Bazmee
Cast: Salman Khan, Asin, Mahesh Manjrekar, Paresh Rawal
Rating: **

Are you ready to endure two dozen noisy characters for one underplayed Salman Khan? If the answer is yes, Ready is the film for you.

Salman Khan almost gets into real-life role-play as Prem Kapoor, the most eligible bachelor in a Hum Saath Saath Hain kinda extended joint family. Enter Sanjana (Asin), a runaway bride who poses as a prospective bahu in the Kapoor clan. Anees Bazmee's fascination for keeping the audiences hanging on and his actors suspended from hilltops (No Entry, Welcome) continues as Sanjana and Prem 'fall' in love.

But Sanjana is sandwiched between two ham-burger mamajis (Akhilendra Mishra, Sharat Saxena) who are behind her ancestral assets. Prem befriends the chartered accountant (Paresh Rawal) common to both mamajis, to get close to their families. Bazmee almost revisits his earlier film Welcome, as Prem goes on a family furbishing mode by taming the rowdy ruffians and reuniting the separated siblings in their sixties.

Remade from the 2008 Telugu film Ready (Genelia D'Souza, Ram), the screenplay is adapted in fast-food format with cliched conflicts and so many characters that you lose count after a point of time. Understanding the character correlations is a task that could even baffle the Barjatyas. The director keeps his task simple by sticking to his brand of loud comedy, over-the-top acts, caricatured characters and silly slapstick.

The first half involves running around the trees (read beating around the bush) while the actual story starts only in the second half. The graph of the narrative does pick up somewhere in the second half but the tempo falls intermittently thanks to the convoluted writing and the protracted proceedings. By the time the film reaches its melodramatic high-voltage climax giving Salman simulated scope to go topless, it leaves you exasperated.

The entire villain tribe is unusually unkempt and intentionally irritating. The sidetrack of the pampered spoilt grandson (Mohit Baghel) being subjugated by Salman's buffoonery is annoying. Sajid-Farhad's dialogues don't elevate the humour much and when Salman expresses romance with lines like 'main kutta hoon, yeh kutiya hain', you know the film is going to the dogs. The music is inspired and the action has impact though thankfully not overdone.

Salman Khan looks suave, has smashing screen presence and seems in his comfort zone employing his standard set of dancing, acting and action skills. Quite unusual of him, he underplays his role in the second half and does a decent job at it. Asin looks good and shares comfortable chemistry with Salman. Mahesh Manjrekar, as a person who is at loss of words, reprises almost the same kinda character that Suniel Shetty played a decade back in Awara Pagal Deewana. Paresh Rawal is regular. Standup comedian Sudesh Lahiri gets the funniest scenes. Akhilendra Mishra hams outrageously as if he still is in the hangover of his Chandrakanta days. Arya Babbar is reduced to a junior artist. Nikitin Dheer is unrecognizable, not that he is a popular face. Child standup comedian Mohit Baghel is annoying. Amidst cameos, one wonders what Chunky Pandey was doing in the film?

If you are still ready to not see beyond Salman Khan in the film, Ready is the film for you!
