Khan's duality shines through as he comes to Dubai to promote Ready. Plus: is he or isn't he ready to settle down?

If there's any actor in Bollywood who enjoys a schizophrenic image, it has to be Salman Khan. On one hand, India's macho hero has criminal cases stacked against him (reckless driving, poaching of endangered black bucks) and on the other he's known for his bursts of benevolence (he wants to pledge a part of his income to industry workers and doles out thousands of dirhams to the poor).

When tabloid! caught up with him over the phone before he jetted in to Dubai for the premiere of Ready last night, the 45-year-old idol was in the latter mood: humility personified. For instance, when we told him that thousands of fans will be eagerly waiting for his arrival at the premiere, his first concern was whether his female fans would end up injured.

"I just hope that people don't get hurt and that the senior citizens and women don't get pushed around. That's what worries me. Very often, women end up harassed or trampled on. Even while I am at such event, I keep an eye out for such things ' I even tell the security to keep away from children and women," said Khan.

Unlike his larger-than-life, bombastic on-screen persona, the actor speaks in hushed tones. Though it's tempting to believe him, it's tough not to take it all with a pinch of salt since he's known to evoke extreme sentiments among the women he has dated.

While his recent girlfriend Katrina Kaif speaks highly on Khan, calling him her mentor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was not so kind. After their break-up in 2001, Rai Bachchan had alleged that Khan often played rough with her.

'Lots of experience'

Among his co-stars, the reaction towards him is far more unanimous. From Asin (his romantic partner in Ready) to Sonakshi Sinha (his lover in Dabangg), his colleagues go into raptures when his name is uttered. Ask Khan about his soaring popularity with these women and he brushes it off modestly. "I have no idea why I am so popular," he said.

"But I have dealt with co-stars for the last 20 years and I know how to treat them well and take care of them. Lots of experience there."

Sounding increasingly like his hugely successful Dabangg character Chulbul Pandey (aka Robin Hood Pandey), the actor ' who has given Bollywood some of its biggest blockbusters such as Wanted, Hum Aapke Hai Kaun and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam ' adds that he is willing to sacrifice personal glories such as awards to give youngsters a chance.

"If they [award officials] want me to be a part of a performance to entertain the crowds, I can do that. As far as nominations or awards go, I don't want my name in there because my absence means there may be one good newcomer who stands a chance of winning that award. My award and reward comes to me from my fans."

His last sentence echoes his sturdy hold over Bollywood for over two decades. How else to explain the spectacle that was Dabangg? A small-time police inspector flipping Ray Bans (in typical Rajinikanth style) before bashing up villains, delivering cheesy one-liners and his shirt ripping off when he stands tall are all a part of this blockbuster package. His on-screen antics even earned him the tag Bollywood's Rajini, but Khan shrugs off the title with just one line. "There is only one Rajinikanth, and may God give him the best health ever."

His sanguine tone makes it difficult to believe that this actor is the same wild persona who throws some of the best (read debauchery den) parties in town and has a lengthy dating record. Sensing his zen state, we go for the jugular. So when will Bollywood's most eligible bachelor hang up his designer boots and settle into matrimony?

"As soon as the boots get worn out. Marriage is not in my hands or in your hands. It's something that's in nobody's hands."

Screaming UAE fans show Salman Khan they are 'Ready'

Despite his tardiness, Khan tackled issues about his Being Human charity, film piracy and 'Andaz Apna Apna' sequel

Even though the UAE media and gaping fans were ready for Salman Khan, the Bollywood superstar clearly wasn't, considering he made everyone wait a little over 1.5 hours to kick off his press conference to announce the premiere of his new film, "Ready" in Dubai tonight.

But fans and sponsors didn't seem to mind the long wait considering they managed to interact with one of India's most popular actors, who also happened to be in-check with his trademark sense of humour that kept everyone laughing through the 30-minute event.

However, before anyone could even frame a question to get the media meet underway, Khan was quick to point out: "Let me just say that we had fights on the sets of "Ready". As everyone in India seems to be asking us the question, we might as well admit to it. Next question please."

This was Khan's way of dealing with the controversies that have seen the Indian press lap up news of creative differences between the actor and director, Anees Bazmee (who was also in attendance). So much has been speculated that at one point Khan had even reportedly directed the film in parts as he was unhappy with the final product.

A veteran in answering queries without ever really answering them, when quizzed about the film's USP, Khan said: "There are so many people here at this event. That is our USP."

When only silence welcomed him back, he added: "This is a situational comedy, good for families as there is no vulgarity. If there is any exposure, it is not by Asin (the film's co-star) but all mine. Anees tried to expose too but it didn't happen."

He went on to add: "All of us had a blast shooting for this film and after "Andaz Apna Apna"(Khan's cult classic), this is the first film where all of us have cracked up between takes.

"Plus, Asin, who unfortunately couldn't be here as her passport is stuck at the UK immigration office as she is meant to fly to London to shoot for "Housefull 3" (actually part two, but who's checking), is a very competent actor."

Marketing mayhem

Produced by T-Series, Rajat Rawail and Suhail Khan Productions, Khan joked about how a good product this film was, which is why "so many producers have attached their name to it."

Trade pundits have already speculated that the film's opening could possibly rival even that of Khan's National Award-winning "Dabangg" last year.

However, Khan wasn't happy with that. "I want this film to break the record of "3 Idiots" (one of India's most successful film till date)."

When told that "Dabangg" had actually performed a better opening at the ticket receipts than the Aamir Khan-starrer he mentioned, Khan's look of disbelief said it all.

Marketing, which takes up a big percentage of a film's budget in Bollywood these days, sees stars and filmmakers put on big events to promote their prior to its release. When asked what Khan and the filmmakers of "Ready" had planned, he said: "My marketing strategy is, where I have been asked to go, I have. They told me to come to Dubai, I did. They asked me to come again, I came again."

Quizzed about introducing trademark one-liners into his films as a marketing gimmick, he laughed and said: "My father (Salim Khan, a famous Bollywood scriptwriter) says, when the time is right, you will be able to bat far with just a few choice words.

"Take his famous lines from "Sholay", which became a cult overnight. Kids picked up those lines because luck and timing played a part. Same applies for my films and my one-liners."

All for a cause

However, the nonconformist actor that he is, the eve of the release of his film in India, will see the actor do what he does best: bring joy to the underprivileged.

"We are taking a step away from this marketing and tomorrow we are organising special screenings with Being Human (his charity organisation), to invite nearly 3,000 underprivileged children to see the film," he said.

Khan, whose Being Human organisation has helped raise hundreds of thousands to help the needy, has also pledged giving a part of his income to the film industry workers who don't earn enough to make ends meet.

"I haven't decided how much of my income will be given from each film or how the breakdown will occur. I also am unsure of whether a formal unit will organise the cut or would I go straight to the 22 associations of workers in the industry. It is still in the planning stages, but hopefully will start very soon," he said.

The actor appeared uncomfortable about speaking about his personal charity work, but when asked about his feelings on fake Being Human merchandising entering the market, the actor saw red.

Tackling piracy

Without being able to print the colourful words he used to describe these pirates, he said: "These dogs are sick people who don't realise that this is money not for big corporations but for poor, underprivileged people. They are stealing from them. They should be ashamed of themselves."

Piracy is something that has been a bone of contention with, considering the actor also recently took to micro blogging site Twitter and spoke about the rip off merchandise and the pirated DVDs entering the market, prior to "Ready's" release.

"What is spent by the filmmakers on a film, almost twice of that revenue is lost to piracy. We, in fact, wanted to hold a special screening of "Ready" for the case and crew of my new film "Bodyguard" in Patiala, but we cancelled it due to the worry that the print might get leaked somehow," he said.

Talking about his action man avatar of late in films, with "Bodyguard" being his next, Khan said: "It is only in the last two years I have been signing on for semi action films. Prior to that was only "Karan Arjun", which was over a decade ago. Plus, action keeps you on your toes and I am happy with his genre."

He added: "I have done some every bad films during my career, "Kyon Ki" being one of them, which made me wonder, why I ever signed on for such a movie to begin with. However, these days I only shoot for films that I will see as an audience member."

Khan, who has his schedule full with film projects over the next few years, said that a sequel to "Andaz Apna Apna" could also very well happen.

"We have been ready for a sequel for the last 20 years, and both Aamir and I have been hearing rumours about it. Give us a good script and we will be ready. But the film has to be 20 times better than its predecessor," he revealed.

Salman Khan charms fans in Dubai

Bollywood star charms fans in Dubai as his latest film Ready premieres in the city

  • Star power: Salman Khan arrives for a press conference at Grand Hyatt Hotel for his film Ready

Dubai: There's a reason Bollywood actor Salman Khan is the star he is today. And if his appearance at the world premiere of his new movie Ready is anything to go by, there's more superstardom ahead for this charmer.

Despite his later-than-late entrance at the Grand Hyatt on Wednesday afternoon, Khan didn't seem concerned to have left his fans, sponsors and press waiting for nearly two hours. Entering the hall, his 5-foot 8-inch frame immediately commanded everyone's presence. Surrounded by bodyguards, paparazzi and hysterical fans, the superstar made his way to the mic, commanding all the attention a superstar deserves.

"Thank you very much for coming," he said, amidst hoots, hysterics and applause. Gone was the often-squeaky, sometimes high-pitched voice from his on-screen appearances. The Khan that held the audience captive had a serene presence around him.

In an accent far removed from his Indian roots, Khan spoke slowly, precisely, clearly, with a poker-face dry humour underlying his sentences. He pulled every trick in the book to make the already hysterical mob of fans even more hysterically obsessed with his every word.

Barely had the actor finished an answer when he was interrupted by a journalist, DJ or fan with the next question. Those who couldn't get to the mic quick enough shouted out their questions at the first given pause in conversation.

Dance with me, marry me

Women asked him to dance, another asked him to marry her, one wanted to see him thrust his pelvis in his famous dance moves… Yes, the requests came in fast and furious. And with gentlemanly charm and poise, Khan answered each one, never breaking eye contact, never mincing words, throwing in a joke when charm alone wouldn't carry him through.

Wearing dark jeans and a light blue shirt, Khan was buffed and beefed up. He played the crowd like a pro, charming them off their feet with each word spoken, formulating answers for even the most impossible questions thrown his way. When a fan in a Being Human T-shirt (Khan's charity project) asked the actor to marry her, he didn't miss a beat. A long lazy smile later, he nodded, ever so slightly, reassuring her with a "sure, sweetheart."

When another fan begged him to dance the step in his latest hit song Dhinka Chika, in which he thrusts his hips with hands stuck in his pocket, he seemed unfazed. "Why do you want to see me do the step with my hands in my pocket?" he asked with a playful glint in his eye. "I would, but my pants are too tight for that."

Yes, Khan is still the class clown, a title he seemingly enjoys. Just about any subject is fair game for a joke. When asked by an adoring fan as to when he would finally marry, he didn't blink an eye or crack the tiniest hint of a smile when he said, "Even I won't know when my own marriage occurs. I'll just wake up in the morning and ask what the heck happened. You, however, may get to find out before me."

And that's Salman Khan for you. An actor who has a country full of fans hanging on to his every word. That's the Salman Khan XPRESS encountered on Wednesday. The superstar to whom time doesn't matter. Be it one, two or five hours late, his presence will always command an audience.
