Mani's words matter

TNN | Jun 8, 2011, 12.12pm IST

Director Bejoy Nambiar, whose Shaitan is being much talked about in Bollywood circles, was recently in Chennai to screen the film for his mentor, Mani Ratnam.

Talking to CT, Bejoy says, "It was a special screening for Mani sir. I've assisted him in Guru, Raavanan and Raavan, and his opinion matters a lot to me. It was held at a popular multiplex in the city. My cameraman Madhie and production designer Rajeevan were also present at the screening, which was held on June 5."

So, what was Mani's reaction after seeing the film? "Two of the people who I wanted to satisfy were my guru, Mani sir, and my producer, Anurag Kashyap. Mani sir liked the film a lot and he was quite happy with the outcome. He's a talented director and I love all his works. Getting his approval for my film was very important for me," says Bejoy, who adds that he had planned to make Shaitan as a bilingual.

"I had plans of releasing it in Hindi and Tamil. But things didn't work out the way I planned," he informs.

Shaitan, starring Rajeev Khandelwal and Kalki Koechlin, deals with the lives of six individuals.

The more and more i read about this film i feel like its so close to home. Im a huge mani ratnam buff and love kashyap films as well, bejoy nambiar being somewhat of a student of mani and having simularities with kashyap makes me feel like this film is going to be phenomenal and a favourite.

Shaitan Movie Review

By Pankaj Sabnani, Glamsham Editorial

Debutant director Bejoy Nambiar, in a pre-release interview of SHAITAN revealed that he was in the process of making the film since four years. Reason? Because no producer was willing to produce the film. Finally, just a week before the film went on floors, Anurag Kashyap decided to co-produce it and things started falling into place.

It's baffling to know why producers turned down a script like SHAITAN, which had all the ingredients of a taut thriller. Anyway, the film is finally releasing. And that is the good news.

'It's not mischief... It's not lust...It's not rage...It's not excess... It's that moment...that brings out the SHAITAN in you' read the text in SHAITAN's promo. This line aptly describes our five youngsters, who live life as if there's no tomorrow. Amrita Jayshankar aka Amy (Kalki Koechlin), Dushyant Sahiu aka Dash (Shiv Pandit), Karan Chaudhary aka KC (Gulshan Devaiya), Zubin (Neil Bhoopalam) and Tanya (Kirti Kulhari) just want to have fun. All's hunky-dory until they meet with an accident and kill two people on a two wheeler. Their attempts to cover up the incident turn futile as they find themselves in a deplorable situation. Inspector Mathur (Rajeev Khandelwal), who has been suspended for throwing a high-profile person off the first floor for cheating his wife, is handed over the responsibility to fetch the youngsters.

Bejoy has come up with an ace in his very first film. Right from the script to direction to narration to execution; everything is just about perfect. There's hardly any dull moment throughout the narrative. The riveting plot offers copious twists and turns which are shrewdly done. There are enough light moments to make sure that the proceedings don't get too heavy. The way the story unfolds in the end is very convincing.

Although there are many things to talk about, the two things that stand out are the camera angles and the background score. They are simply out of the world! Watch the scene in which Mathur's character is introduced or the chase scene in the second half with Pintya playing in the background and you'll marvel at the technical brilliance. The songs are superbly interspersed with the narrative. In fact, they elevate the impact to a great extent. Sreekar Prasad's editing is too good.

Rajeev Khandelwal impresses and how! He plays the honest and vulnerable cop to perfection.
RJ-turned-actor Shiv Pandit is brilliant. Kalki Koechlin is efficient. Gulshan Devaiya shows promise in his work. Kirti Kulhari is decent. Neil Bhoopalam is good. Pawan Malhotra is effective. Raj Kumar Yadav, who was recently seen in RAGINI MMS, is excellent in his special appearance. Rajat Barmecha (of UDAAN fame) is hilarious in his cameo. Sheetal Menon, who plays Rajeev's wife, doesn't get much scope.

SHAITAN is a spellbinding thriller with 'awesomeness' written all over it. Splendidshaitaniyat!

Rating: 4/5

Rajeev Khandelwal, Kalki Koechlin and Anurag Kashyap at the press conference of Shaitan

Kirti Kulhari, Shiv Pandit, Gulshan Devaiya and Neil Bhoopalam also attended the conference
Date: Thu, Jun 09, 2011

The cast of the movie Shaitan, along with the producer Anurag Kashyap attended a press conference at the Cinemax theatres, Mumbai.

The young cast was looking smart and shaitaani at the same time!! Kirti Kulhari, Shiv Pandit and Gulshan Devaiya were spotted wearing a long black gown over their clothes (guess they were justifying the caption the movie - Face your inner shaitan).

While Anurag Kashyap kept it simple and was wearing a casual white shirt, Kalki Koechlin was looking cute in her brown shorts and also sported a hat along with it. The recently married couple gave us some lovey-dovey poses.

Rajeev Khandelwal was looking smart in his check shirt, which he clubbed with a pair of blue jeans. Meanwhile, before putting on the black gown, Kirti Kulhari gave us a great picture in her flower printed dress.

Shaitan releases tomorrow.

'Shaitan' may have decent footfalls
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, June 09, 2011]

Three new films release this weekend and frankly, they can be expected to suffer from anxious moments as of now at the least. 'Ready' has been seeing huge collections for itself and it's second weekend is all set to be bigger than the first weekend of all other films that have released in 2011 so far. This means that 'Shaitan', 'West is West' and 'Love Express' would be struggling to make their presence felt.

Amongst these films, the one that still has chances to find an audience for itself is 'Shaitan'. The film's dark and edgy promo has done the trick and it is apparent that 'Shaitan' would be breaking quite a few rules when it comes to pushing the envelope. Film's funky music, though not much popular as of now, gives a very good sense of the kind of territory that 'Shaitan' would be venturing into. A word of mouth film that should find it's bearing amongst the youth in cities; 'Shaitan' would have a slow start (around 30%-40%) but would still be better than the rest.

The other film that may just about manage to see some footfalls is 'West Is West'. Sequel of 'East Is East' and starring Om Puri, it would be basically released as an English film by multiplexes which means that it's target audience too would be restricted. Controlled promotion and sudden release in the time when 'Ready' is still going strong and there is a crowd of other Hindi releases means that 'West Is West' would be struggling to gain much moolah at the box office.

As for 'Love Express', a Subhash Ghai production, it is a delayed film which is just managing to find a release slot when there are other big films on both sides of the week. It would be a miracle if this non-starcast and minimally promoted film manages to complete a week at the box office.
