This, performance of a lifetime kind of hype leads to unusually high expectation.SRK in MNIK is one such role...

When the film was announced,Iwondered why PC would want to do this film...After the first promo,I was excited..

Now I am back to wondering why PC did it.It was a long and grueling shoot too..

I think if you're already attempting a central character, half the battle's won. The tricky part would be to get noticed in a relatively smaller role.

That's aptly said. Priyanka's sweety that had at the most 10 scenes was well appreciated and Kareena shone in a relatively smaller role as Aaliya in Dev amongst stalwarts.

The problem with Priyanka Chopra is that she tries too hard to act well in her films, just like she acts too hard to be likebale in her off-screen public appearances and interviews!
And while, trying too hard shows that the person is genuinly and desperately trying to make an impression, it also shows that he or she is trying to do something that is not just not in their league!
And that is what happened to Priyanka in Saat Khoon Maaf! The script of the film was fine, its a very interesting premise, but in a film, where more than 80% of the movie revolves around one central character, it becomes essential that the actor playing the central character has to be bloody good!
Like James Franco in 127 hours for example, who despite being the one and only character in the movie, pulls together and seals the entire film and makes it Oscar-worthy brilliant!
Ofcourse, Vishal Bharadwaj is also to be blamed for his shockingly shoddy direction! I had to rub my eyes and make sure that this movie was directred by the same guy who made classics like Maqbool and Omkara and even Kaminey! VB was all over the place with the film and his usual grip over the story and characters was completely lacking!
Overall, Saat Khoon Maaf is Priyanka's best work till date, amongst all that she has done till now, but is definitely not good enough to carry off such a complex character and film!
PS : I saw the movie yesterday and the only thing I remembered from it was the sight of a gorgeous Neil Nitin Mukesh without his shirt!😆

I'd say yes, it was. It depends on the way you look at it. If you expected the character to stare at her husbands, drenched in sweat, eyes popping out of her sockets and chest heaving ridiculously, then of course you'd be let down. However, if you expected a subtle and 'implied violence' sort of performance, then that's what you'll get. She didn't underplay it, that's what her character was like IMO.

*Edit - 'Lame' is a very strong word. But yes, I'd say that we don't want to pay attention to our films if they're not offered to us in an attractive package. Even though we're gradually steering away from conventional 'cinema', there's still a long way to go before dark cinema finds audience for itself. When I went to watch 7KM, I could hear young boys laughing and cheering and passing extremely nasty comments during the scene when we're shown that Irrfan Khan's character is actually sadomasochistic. That happened quite a few times during the film. And this was supposed to be a 'multiplex' - so you can imagine what would have happened in single screens across the country.

7KM is just one example. It happens almost routinely, even during films like Dhobi Ghat, Love sex aur Dhokha and Dev D. So frankly, I don't see why an audience like that deserves to have it's choices respected. In the last one year, there hasn't been one single instance when I've gone to watch a film and there has been no drama or tamasha in the theatre. It's very, very hard to appreciate an audience like that.

So yes, I wouldn't say 'lame' but our audience definitely loves to come and watch 'different' films only so they can pass nasty comments, whistle and laugh unnecessarily. They come looking for conventional entertainment, and if they don't find it, they create it themselves.

I am sorry you take offense, but I am not retracting my statement! I don't think the word "lame" is that harsh of a word. Anyway, I am glad you voiced your opinion, but I stand by my original words. 😲

What do you really know about a country who's population you are generalizing with your comments? Ahh...spare me the thoughtless views of the so-called intelligent west! I am happy to watch a mindless movie made by Rajanikanth in a non-multiplex movie hall in India any day. Try it...it is great for the soul!
