p.s - I don't understand why everyone's crying over the film's BO status. I can't speak for other multiplexes but the one I went to was completely full, and it was an 11 pm show.

OMG i'm so waiting for your review, i wanna more detail about PC performance!

Saat Khoon Maaf - Movie review

By: Bryan Durham Date: 2011-02-19 Place: Mumbai

Saat Khoon Maaf
A; Drama
Dir: Vishal Bhardwaj
Cast: Priyanka Chopra, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Naseeruddin Shah, John Abraham, Irrfan Khan, Usha Uthup, Annu Kapoor, Vivaan Shah, Aleksandr Dyachenko, Ruskin Bond
**

DISCLAIMER: If you do plan to watch the film, be warned. This review contains spoilers.

WHAT'S IT ABOUT: This tale of myriad murders begins in Pondicherry where Sussanna (Chopra) resides and owns a ranch of sorts. She is the kind of femme fatale you definitely do not wanna mess with.

She's confident, beautiful and knows it, and knows how to get her way. But her taste and judgment in men is quite flawed.
She begins her killing spree with the pehla pati, her dad's choice, Major Rodrigues (Neil).

The guy a cruel cad gets exceedingly frustrated after his foot gets amputated after an injury suffered during combat and finding out that he can't father a child. He vents his frustrations on Anna and his mean streak hits her household hard. She feeds him to a man-eating panther.

At his funeral, she locks eyes with a beefed-up choir boy, Jamshed Singh Rathod aka Jimmy (John), whose cheating, lies and drug addiction lead to death by an "accidental" heroin overdose.

Next comes Wasiullah (Irrfan), a shaayar she meets in Kashmir, who can only get it up if he spanks and bites her. He is buried alive in the snow. Then, there's the Hindi-spouting Russian spy, Nikolai (Aleksandr) who she croons 'Darling' to and later feeds to her snakes.

He's followed by a cop named Keemat (Kapoor), who she marries out of necessity and later disposes of with an overdose of viagra. Why? He begins to get boring. Then there's Madhusudan Tarafdar (Naseeruddin Shah, sounding Parsi but trying his best to sound Bengali), who weds her because he's bankrupt and needs her money.

He saves her only to try to poison her but tops the faithful butler instead. She exacts revenge with a forced round of Russian roulette. For the seventh on her hit-list read on...

WHAT'S HOT: The photography is above par. The music is likeable and the score lilting. One thing that Bhardwaj does get right (for what he gets wrong, read on) is his choice of hymns at funerals and weddings. Priyanka Chopra brings a zestiness to Sussanna that kinda makes you forgive her character's assassinations at first. In the second half she gets unbearably redundant. She's awfully quick to anger and quite poor in mercy. Usha Uthup does an awesome turn as the housekeeper. Neil Nitin Mukesh as the Major shines above the rest of the hubbies. Vivaan makes a confident debut as Arun, an orphan Sussanna showers love and affection on.

WHAT'S NOT: Unfortunately, an otherwise exciting director riddles this textbook script with meandering subplots and a very weak ending. The method to the madness is this. Each husband has a hubris (fatal flaw) that works to his undoing. It's just a matter of time before it ticks Susie off. Awfully convenient, no?

WHAT'S THAT! You've probably seen this sequence in the theatrical trailer. Sussanna's talking about her seventh husband being "dead". PC, who channels her, spits out the words, 'I'm going to drink his blood' and then lolls her tongue. If you're Catholic, you'll get both her metaphors. And you're going to hate Bhardwaj for this. First, Catholics (and Christians, in general) believe that Christ died, but also that he was resurrected. Also, you kinda get it that she's becoming a nun (considered spouses of Christ). Also. What's with the dervish dance with Jesus in the dark? We get the part that she seeks redemption, so why go the extra mile in digging your own grave, Vishal?

WHAT TO DO: At two and a half hours, this cumbersome play-by-numbers tale takes its toll on you. It isn't long before you scream bloody murder.

'7 Khoon Maaf', a winner by Vishal Bhardwaj (IANS Hindi Film Review, Rating: ****)

Film: '7 Khoon Maaf'; Starring: Priyanka Chopra,Naseeruddin Shah, Irrfan Khan,Anu Kapoor,Alexandr Dyachenko,John Abraham,Neil Nitin Mukesh, Vivaan Shah; Directed by: Vishal Bhardwaj; Rating: ****

Chalk up an absolute winner for the Vishal Bhardwaj-Priyanka Chopra team. They make a coherent vision out of an inconceivable marital crises.

How do you make sense of a woman who's an incorrigible potentially-loathsome serial spouse-killer who when challenged about her weird passion for changing husbands by divine decree rather than the law of the land, turns around and says, 'This heart of mine, it's to blame.' Wicked laughter follows. And dammit, we are amused!

How does one make head or 'tale' of such a woman? Well, the first thing a director with a canny sense and sensibility does is sign Priyanka Chopra to play the wretchedly unfulfilled, genetically incomplete woman, a living, throbbing warning against the institution of marriage!

Priyanka, not for the first time, proves she is leagues ahead of all competition. She approaches this strange and sensual creature of the night from the outside and then quietly makes inroads into the woman's heart and soul. We can actually see the character's snarled inner-world on Priyanka's face! We don't even know when and how she does it. Priyanka is that kind of a player👏.

Vishal Bharadwaj has earlier made films about gangs and gangsterism. Every time the dark brooding atmospheric surface seemed to suggest a life of sinister suppressions. Those unspoken, intangible thoughts and visions that often guide a human being to his or her doom are outlined in '7 Khoon Maaf' with supreme poetic elegance.

This is Bhardwaj's most fluidly-narrated film to date. Of course, having Gulzar on board helps. He pens Urdu poetry for Irrfan Khan and rock poetry for John Abraham. For Priyanka poetry is not needed. She creates a kind of indecipherable poetic statement for her deeply dysfunctional character who kills 6 husbands and moves to the 7th at the end of the film with the profound satirical grief of a woman who has discovered that this world has no true love to offer her.

True love...ah! Now that's an idea. At heart Vishal's dark elegiac film is about the search for true love. The relationship that Sussanna (Priyanka) forms with a young boy(Vivaan Shah) as she goes from one husband to another remains at the core of the film. In a macabre subversion of the almost-pure love that Susanna shares with Vivaan's character, at one point in the narration she tries to seduce the boy who's almost like a son. It's a dark ugly moment, almost repugnant in its incestuous resonances but in keeping with the character's insatiable appetite for destruction.

Vishal Bhardwaj brings to the storyboard a deep sense of tragic grandeur even as Susanna slips from self-gratification to delusional spirituality.

Priyanka Chopra has already proved herself way ahead of her contemporaries in her earlier works notably 'Fashion' and 'What's Your Raashee'. In '7 Khoon Maaf' she moves to another level, displaying a range of emotions and age-changes (minus prosthetics) that one last saw in Shabana Azmi's performances.

Priyanka's sequences with Irrfan Khan (playing a gentle poet who transforms into a sexual pervert in bed) are stuff poetic nightmares are made of. We can clearly see the cinematographer (Ranjan Palit) is not in love with the actress, but the character. His camera searches for intransigent images in Susanna's life, even as Priyanka's quest for the character's core takes her into areas of self-expression that are far beyond the reach of cinema acting as we know it.

A. Sreekar Prasad edits the life of Susanna with a surety that, alas, the character never comes close to achieving in her dealings with the opposite sex. Sreekar creates a symphonic seamless movement from one husband to another, sometimes joining segments in Susanna's life with visuals that would otherwise seem incompatible.

The husbands are all played by actors who have no qualms in stripping away their vanity to become the kind of suave but duplicitous untrustworthy spouses who cheat and betray for the sake of the opposite emotion to love. Irrfan Khan as a wolf in poet's clothing, Naseeruddin Shah as the affable old Bengali dietician (his Bengali accent is more dead-on than any true-blue Bengalis) and John Abraham as a stereotypical rock musician gone to poppy-seed, are pitch-perfect in their creating a drama of the callous for Priyanka's character.

But it's Neil Nitin Mukesh as her first legless army-man husband whose display of clenched menace jolts you.

As a storyteller Vishal Bhardwaj has never been more in command of his language. He punctuates Susanna's story with bouts of unexpected humour and poetry. Providentially the murders are committed in ways that appear more humorous than savage. And that's both a good and a bad thing.

The narrative shows a rare understanding of the gender dynamics and the sexual tensions between men and women. Priyanka Chopra's interaction with the unctuous and closet-horny police officer Anu Kapoor delectably illustrates the fable of the Temptress & The Besotted. And by the way Viagara never seemed funnier.

Priyanka Chopra goes from husband-to-husband with a mocking sigh of resigned surrender. She is not a victim. But neither is she the hero of the bizarre web of destruction and delusion that her character weaves around her.

An intense one by Priyanka

Nidhi Mittal

Saat khoon maaf
Stars: Priyanka Chopra, Vivaan Shah, Neil Nitin Mukesh, John Abraham
At: PVR & others
Rated: 7/10

This one is, by far, Priyanka Chopra's best work. The former beauty queen has entered the role of a no-nonsense wife so well that you start looking at situations from her point of view. You feel about her men the way she does and you move through the changing eras and styles with her. Such is the gusto with which Piggy Chops plays a woman who is consistently looking for love which she was devoid of since childhood owing to her parents' early demise; a woman who would rather end an infidel hubby's life than divorce him.

And it goes without saying that part of the credit goes to Vishal Bharadwaj. A maverick film-maker that he is, he has brought his typical techniques in this one too ' that of dark cinematography and harsh realities. An adaptation from Ruskin Bond's Sussana's Seven Husbands, Saat Khoon Maaf is complete balance of numerous stars, perfect acting, apt music and pacey treatment.

With flashes of important world events ' like Operation Bluestar, Kashmir riots, hijacking of IC-814 and 26/11 Mumbai attacks ' strewn in the story, what hits the most is the eerieness of a film that's not horror in genre. Fantastically shown, Priyanka's dark mood, whenever she is out to kill a husband, has been portrayed with such morbid overtones that it scares you. It's worth a watch!

I hope not! Vishal is supposed to do a movie with SRK.. SRK ke aajkal vaise hi din kharaab chal rahein hai.. 😆 I know pri is getting good reviews for her performance from many critics.. but i always felt that she was a misfit for this role.. maybe that aitraaz wali pri.. but these days pri seems lost to me.. some one like kangana or urmila would have been perfect for this role.
