Come February and it's the month when Love is indeed in the air. After all, people worldwide celebrate Valentines Day on Feb 14 with their loved ones. In our films too, romance has been a key ingredient without which many of our films would have been incomplete.
As a tribute to the Season of Love, we at Bollywood Hungama take a look at some of the Most Romantic Couples (onscreen) of the Decade gone by who have literally set the screen on fire with their sizzling chemistry. Read on to find out if your favourite couple makes it to this coveted list.
Shah Rukh Khan & Kajol
To say that Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol are among the most loved on-screen couples in the history of Bollywood would be an understatement. While SRK-Kajol's chemistry started in the 90's courtesy hits such as DDLJ, Baazigar, Karan Arjun and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, it continued well into the first decade of the New Millennium. 2001 saw SRK and Kajol serenading each other in the cult romantic song 'Suraj Hua Madham' from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham while recently even My Name Is Khan saw them portray a much-in-love couple. Truly their chemistry will be talked about by generations to come.
Hrithik Roshan & Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
Hrithik Roshan & Aishwarya Rai Bachchan acted in many films individually before Yash Raj finally cast them together in the action flick Dhoom 2. Needless to say, Hrithik and Ash's sizzling on-screen chemistry ne sabko 'Crazy Kiya Re'. Soon every filmmaker in town wanted to cash in on this jodi's sizzling chemistry. While Dhoom 2 saw them looking their sexiest best, their next outing together namely Ashutosh Gowariker's Jodhaa Akbar saw them in completely different light. Hrithik was completely in character as the royal emperor Akbar while Ash was grace personified as his devoted wife Jodhaa. This time too they hit the bulls-eye at the Box Office. However, it was not quite the case of third time lucky with the duo as their third outing together Guzaarish failed to take the Box Office by storm. Nevertheless this couple surely is among the most romantic on-screen couples of the decade gone by.
Saif Ali Khan & Rani Mukherjee
He is the Nawab of Pataudi and she is the Queen of Hearts and together they have given us some of the most romantic on-screen moments. They are none other than Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukherjee. Saif and Rani were first cast opposite each other in the 2004 Yash Raj rom-com Hum Tum. The film was a huge Box Office success and even fetched Saif the coveted National Award for Best Actor. Saif and Rani's chemistry especially in the rain-soaked title track became the talk of the town. The duo went on to do two more films for the YRF banner namely Ta Ra Rum Pum and Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic. While Ta Ra Rum Pum did average business, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic didn't get any Pyaar from the junta-janardhan and but obviously couldn't create any Magic at the Box Office. Yet there is no denying the fact that Saif and Rani do make for one the most romantic on-screen couples.
Shahid Kapoor & Kareena Kapoor
They say that real life couples don't make for good reel life couples. The same was the case with 'Once-upon-a-time-couple' Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor. The duo, who was earlier seeing each other, signed a number of films together to maybe spend maximum time with each other. However, most of these films such as Fida, Chup Chup Ke, 36 China Town, Milenge Milenge flopped. But then came Jab We Met, a film which had Shahid and Kareena in their career's best roles. The chemistry was there for one and all to see but sadly by the time the film released and became a huge success, Shasha and Bebo were almost on the verge of a break-up. Nevertheless, Jab We Met continues to be one of the greatest love stories of all time and its no wonder then that Shahid and Kareena feature in our list of most romantic couples of the decade gone by.
Akshay Kumar & Katrina Kaif
Akshay Kumar has worked with countless number of leading ladies in his long career right from the likes of Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit, Juhi Chawla to the current crop of actresses such as Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra. However, his most successful on-screen pairing in recent times, has been with Katrina Kaif. The duo was first paired opposite each other in Humko Deewana Kar Gaye, a film which tanked at the Box Office. Post that was Namastey London a gargantuan hit which saw their chemistry reach dizzying heights. After Namastey London, there was no looking back for this 'Most Wanted Jodi' who went on to star in several films such as Welcome, Singh Is Kinng, De Dana Dan and the recently released Tees Maar Khan. Surely this is one romantic pair the audience can't seem to get enough of.
John Abraham & Bipasha Basu
When John Abraham made his debut opposite Bipasha Basu in Jism in 2003, little did he realise that he would be dating her in a few years time. But anyone who has seen Jism will surely agree that this was one couple which took gave the term 'On-screen chemistry' to an altogether different level. They sizzled and how in tracks such as 'Jaadu Hai Nasha Hai' and 'Chalo...Tumko Lekar Chale'. Many filmmakers tried to cash in on their sizzling on-screen chemistry and cast them but most of their subsequent films such as Aetbaar, Madhoshi and Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal bombed at the Box Office. In spite of it, this brawny hunk and this dusky beauty do make it to our list of Top 10 Romantic On-Screen Couples of the decade gone by.
Shah Rukh Khan & Rani Mukherjee
Besides Kajol, if there is one another leading lady with whom Shah Rukh has had a fabulous on-screen chemistry it is Rani Mukherjee. The duo first starred together in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, a film which went on to re-write Box Office history. Post that SRK even signed Rani for his home production Chalte Chalte and the film was also a smash-hit. Veer Zaara may not have had them paired opposite each other but the film still emerged a Box Office hit. Their dream-run at the Box Office came to a halt with Paheli which tanked at the ticket window. Even their last film together Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna didn't exactly set the B.O. on fire. Still one can't ignore the magic this couple created on-screen in the films which they did together.
Akshay Kumar & Priyanka Chopra
Long before the Akki-Kat jodi set the screen on fire with their sizzling chemistry, it was the jodi of Akshay Kumar & Priyanka Chopra which was much talked about. Piggy Chops worked early in her career with Akshay in Andaaz which did well at the Box Office. Later on they delivered the huge B.O. hit Mujhse Shaadi Karoge. Who can forget their sizzling chemistry in the adulterous court-room drama Aitraaz? And even Waqt- A Race Against Time had them complimenting each other beautifully on-screen. Post that, however the duo haven't worked together. Rumour mills say that Akki's better-half Twinkle wasn't too happy with her hubby's growing proximity to PC. Nevertheless there is no denying that they do making a smokin' hot couple onscreen.
Shahid Kapoor & Amrita Rao
Much before the Shahid-Kareena onscreen pair became famous, it was Shahid's pairing with Amrita Rao that was the talk of the town. Shahid in fact made his debut opposite Amrita Rao in Ishq Vishk, a film that catapulted him to overnight fame. They later starred together in films such as Waah! Life Ho Toh Aisi and Shikhar both of which failed at the Box Office. However, the humongous success of Rajshri Productions' Vivah immortalized Shahid and Amrita as one of the cutest and most loved romantic onscreen pairs of this era.

Ranbir Kapoor & Katrina Kaif
Among the current generation of actors if there is one hero who is undoubtedly a hot favourite among the fairer sex, it's Ranbir Kapoor. While Ranbir has worked with quite a few of the young leading ladies such as Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Bipasha Basu, it's his pairing with Katrina Kaif that's been the most appreciated and loved by the audiences. Ranbir and Kat first starred together in the comedy film Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani which went on to become a super-hit. The duo was even seen together in Raajneeti though their love track wasn't one of the highlights of the film. While onscreen this couple sets the screen on fire with their sizzling chemistry, off-screen too there has been much talk about the status of their relationship. All in all, it surely does make them one of the hottest couples of current times.
