Yes............
Leave all those high-brow, off-beat movies to geeky heros. When you like you do, Hrthik, you should just give us scintillating, visual-feast movies.

Review: Guzaarish has little magic, too much melodrama

A still from the film

Film: Guzaarish
Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai, Aditya Roy Kapur, Shernaz Patel, Suhel Seth and others
Rating: **

You would expect a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film, with Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai heading the cast, to be looked-forward-to. But blame it on the not-so-exciting promos, or the debacle of Bhansali's last, Saawariya, the buzz around Guzaarish has been minimal, and expectations low. The film, thankfully, gives a bit more than what you expect from it. But is it enough?

Guzaarish, if it can be said so, is a Bhansali special. Set in Goa,
the film has impeccable art direction, sets right out of a 1960s
classic, over-the-top acting and a plot that gives room for enough
melodrama. It has another Bhansali favourite ' a handicapped
protagonist, a quadriplegic in this case.

Ethan Mascarenhas, one of India's most famous magicians, has been a quadriplegic (someone paralysed in the limbs) for 12 years following an accident during one of his acts. In this period, he has written a book and hosted a radio show and inspired many with his positive outlook to life in spite of his condition. However, Ethan is slowly losing his will to live with his handicap.

As a result, he appeals for euthanasia ' an act of ending one's life as a way to end suffering ' with the help of his lawyer friend Devyani (Patel). Those close to him, like his nurse of 12 years, Sophia (Rai), who neglected her marriage so she could look after Ethan, Nayak (Seth) who has been Ethan's doctor since the time he suffered the accident, and his two caretakers are upset with his decision but nonetheless support him in his effort to end his own life legally.

One day, a young magician, Omar, lands up at Ethan's house, urging Ethan to teach him some of his tricks. Ethan takes on Omar under his tutelage, passing on knowledge of magic that only he possesses. The film is about the last few days of Ethan and the people most affected by his handicap and eventual death ' Sophia, Omar, Dr Nayak, Devyani etc.

The story is inspired by that of Roman Sampedro, a Spanish man who fought for 28 years to earn the right to end his own life. The Spanish film, Mar Adentro (The Sea Inside in English) was based on Sampedro's life. Traces of Anand can't be missed either.

But like in the case of many other Bhansali films, no credit has been given to the film's source. Even though in Saawariya, the short story 'White Nights' was credited as the inspiration, both Black and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam ' rehashes of The Miracle Worker and our very own Woh Saat Din respectively ' had no such mention.

But then you never watch a Bhansali film for an original story ' it's
the treatment which either leaves you spellbound, or wanting more.

Guzaarish has a balance of both. While you can't but be impressed by the film's visual appeal ' and typical Bhansali touches ' why watch something that gives you a 'seen-that-before' kind of a feeling?

The flaws are many. The acting seems right out of an '80's hamfest.

The court room scenes, which could have been a major highlight, are farcical. Rajit Kapoor plays a typical 'public prosecutor' who has evil written all over him. He twitches his lips, flays his arms in the air, and proclaims, "I object your honour", even though you don't see why he's doing so. And it pains to see the talented Shernaz Patel give competition to Kapur in overacting through the court room scenes.

The setting of the film is confusing. Cinema may be about creating a make-believe world ' Bhansali has always made full use of the 'suspension of disbelief' factor ' but in a film that tries to depict a true story, the garish costumes and unreal sets just don't gel in.

If Sophia's dressing sense and make up make you cringe, Omar's 'tramp' look is befuddling. In fact, you expect him to break into a Jab Se Tera Naina kind of song and transform into Ranbir Kapoor from Saawariya, so similar are the get-ups of the two actors.

Aditya Roy Kapur, though, stands out as Omar with a performance that is sure to win him some recognition, and may be fans too. Rai, on the other hand, puts in another lackluster and laboured performance after Raavan this year.

Seth only gets a couple of scenes, thankfully. Roshan does what he can, but somehow fails to create the impact the role and the story needed him to. Oh, there's Moni Kangana Dutta too, in her much-hyped role that comes and goes before you can say 'debut'.

Is all lost then? Not quite. The film, in spite of the morose plot,
has a happy feel to it. Ethan's interactions with Sophia are cute and Omar's character brings some zest in the story. The scenes showing Ethan as a magician are well-choreographed, and the film has some truly heart-wrenching moments, like when Ethan surrenders to the leaking roof above his bed.

But what should have been a subtle tearjerker turns into over-the-top melodrama. Most of the times, you feel like Guzaarish is taking you for a ride ' trying to lure you in with the emotions the characters portray, but you don't always feel yourself, and making sure it tugs at your heartstrings. It succeeds at times. At others, it leaves you unmoved.

Watch Guzaarish if you must. It's not a bad film. But you know
Bhansali can do better. Much better.

Movie Review: Guzaarish
(Romance/Social)
Anupama Chopra, Consulting Editor, Films, NDTV

Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Aditya Roy Kapoor
Music: Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Producer: Sanjay Leela Bhansali/Ronnie Screwvala

Guzaarish is the kind of film that demands that we create a separate category for it—a two and three-quarter rating perhaps. Because there is much to admire here: the film is beautifully shot by Sudeep Chatterjee. It has strong performances and there are several scenes, which genuinely move you. But there is just as much that is clumsy, including an unintentionally comical group-hug in the climax. Despite the many admirable elements, Guzaarish never becomes more than the sum of its parts.

Co-written and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Guzaarish is cobbled together from many well-known movies. From Christopher Nolan's The Prestige, Bhansali sources a world of magic and illusion in which rival magicians sabotage each other.

So the protagonist, Ethan Mascarenhas played by Hrithik Roshan, is great magician

who becomes a quadraplegic when a trick goes wrong. There are shades of Julian Schnabel's The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and several scenes and characters lifted from the 2005 foreign-language Oscar winner The Sea Inside, in which Javier Bardem gives an astounding performance as a bed-ridden man who fights to die. Ethan makes a similar plea for euthanasia or as he calls it: 'ethanasia'.

To this busy canvas, Bhansali adds a beautiful nurse Sophia, played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan; an apprentice Omar, played by Aditya Roy Kapur and a devoted lawyer, played by Shernaz Patel.

The best part of the film is the beautifully etched relationship between Ethan and Sophia, who wearing floor-length Sabyasachi skirts and gorgeous earrings, seems to be channeling Frida Kahlo.

She calls him Mr Mascarenhas and handles him with a tough love devoid of pity. So, when he pretends to be aroused, she tops it with some world-class moans of her own.

Bhansali is among the few directors who enable Aishwarya to shed her trademark artificiality.

Looking stunning, she delivers her most heart-felt performance in years.

Hrithik struggles and sweats with a difficult role. Ethan must be gloriously life-affirming even as he begs for death. But his character, like the film, is too over-wrought and obviously manipulative.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali has positioned himself as Hindi cinema's poet of pain. His movies are operatic and highly melodramatic. But over the course of six films, the worlds Bhansali creates have become increasingly sealed off and removed from any known reality. So even though the characters in Guzaarish ostensibly live in Goa, the milieu isn't one that you would recognise.

This fantasy would be effective if the writing was more organic and the emotions felt more authentic but Bhansali never gives us a chance to invest in these people.

Characters just randomly appear and disappear. So Sophia's abusive husband drops in for one scene as does Ethan's rival who scars him for life. It's clunky and strangely disjointed.

Combining euthanasia with song-and-dance is a tough, tough feat and despite his prodigious talent, Bhansali can't pull it off. Since we don't have a two and three-quarter rating, I'm going with three stars.

Guzaarish Movie Review

November 19, 2010 11:41:25 AM IST
By Pankaj Sabnani, Glamsham Editorial

GUZAARISH took me go back to certain period of my life. I was grumpy and constantly fretting over miniscule things. I used to lose my patience at the drop of a hat. Then an incident changed my outlook towards life. GUZAARISH has the same potential.

This film is special for more reasons than one. After DHOOM 2 and JODHAA AKBAR, it sees the re-union of two of the finest actors in the film industry- Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Director Sanjay Leela Bansali is donning the director's hat after almost three years. It also deals with a very sensitive issue of Euthanasia (mercy-killing).

He was the best magician in town. But a fatal accident left Ethan Mascarenhas (Hrithik Roshan) paralysed and bed-ridden for life. Presently hosting a Radio show 'Hello Zindagi' Ethan spreads hope to listeners through his inimitable wit and humour. For twelve years, he's being aided by nurse Sofia D'Souza (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), who's much more than a nurse.

On the fourteenth anniversary of his accident, Ethan decides to make a petition to the court for Euthanasia (He prefers calling it Ethanasia). This leaves his best friend and lawyer Devyani (Shernaz Patel) and Sofia in complete disarray. Meanwhile, a young man named Omar Siddiqui (Aditya Roy Kapoor) enters Ethan's world with a steadfast desire to learn magic from him.

First things first. GUZAARISH is not an abstract and an ambiguous film. It's a simply narrated film made with a lot of heart. Although it's sensitive, it never gets dukhi. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has treated the grave issue of mercy killing with maturity. Although it's about a suffering person who wants to end his life, its message is about celebrating life. The best part about the film is that it involves you as a viewer. You surely feel for Ethan's plight. He leaves you smiling in many scenes and moist-eyed in some.

The first half is so breezy that you don't realise when it gets over. The second half is a bit of a drag. Like KAL HO NAA HO and the more recent PAA, GUZAARISH's narrative is very light-hearted laden with humorous moments. Ethan says, "God pe bharosa hai, isiliye I am dying to meet him." Also, the scene in which Sofia gives Ethan a leg massage is uproarious.

There are some really poignant moments that leave a lasting impression. Ethan watches a scarecrow on a field, which is symbolic to his own condition. The court-room scenes are just too good. While you expect Ethan to give a long monologue, he conveys everything through his 60-seconds magic trick.

GUZAARISH also has a unique love story between Ethan and Sofia to boast off. It's refreshing and endearing at the same time. The way in which Sofia takes care of Ethan is heartening.

GUZAARISH also has a unique love story between Ethan and Sofia to boast off. It's refreshing and endearing at the same time. The way in which Sofia takes care of Ethan is heartening.

Like most Sanjay Leela Bhansali's films (HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM DEVDAS, BLACK, SAAWARIYA), GUZAARISH is visually stunning. Each and every frame is meticulously shot. Cinematographer Sudeep K. Chatterjee captures some awe-inspiring magic scenes through his lens. Bhavani Iyer and Vibhu Puri's dialogues are excellent. Sanjay's music goes very well with the film.

Hrithik Roshan is outstanding. He spreads his magic and how! This can easily be termed as one of the finest performances of his career. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan delivers a good performance. She's completely dazzling in the Udi song. Shernaz Patel performs her role brilliantly. Watch out for the argument scene between Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Shernaz Patel. Aditya Roy Kapoor plays his part well. Monikangana Dutta doesn't have any scope. Makrand Deshpande was not required. Suhel Seth is very good and so is Rajit Kapoor.

GUZAARISH is poignant, amazing and simply 'magical'. A sincere 'guzaarish', please go watch it.

Guzaarish Review 2: Touching and Magical

Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Cast: Aishwarya Rai
Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Monikangana Dutta, Rajit Kapoor and Shernaz Patel
Rating: ****

Watch Guzaarish for reasons more than one. Not only does this Friday release bring back the best onscreen couple of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan, it also brings back Sanjay Leela Bhansali to the forefront after a gap of three years. And with the director comes his trademark grandeur. Yes, Guzaarish will again bring back the splendidly visual sets which have been part of almost every Sanjay Leela Bhansali production.
The film centers on a couple, a quadriplegic magician Ethan Mascarenhas (Hrithik Roshan) and his nurse Sofia D'Souza (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) and the relationship that they share. Ethan had once been the best magician of his times, but with an unfortunate accident leaving him paralyzed, Ethan has changed professions to being a radio show host, a mouthpiece through which he strives towards spreading love and hope in the lives of his listeners. Sofia on the other hand has been with Ethan, serving and looking after him for the last 14 years of her life. It is when Ethan demands euthanasia (mercy killing to the uninitiated), that the story takes a different turn and introduces emotional conflicts in the lives of the characters in Guzaarish. Shernaz Patel plays Ethan's lawyer and Aditya Roy Kapoor a young man who wants to learn a few tricks from Ethan.
This is undoubtedly one of the best performances that Hrithik Roshan has delivered in the recent past. The pain that Ethan experiences and the hope which keeps him alive comes alive in Hrithik's expressions. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan on the other hand not only looks wonderful but puts up a very subtle act as Sofia, the girl who is trapped with Ethan and who is also living the life of a cripple.
Nobody was unaware of the musical genius in Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Guzaarish only proves that he is not only a good director but a lovely musician as well, with Udi Udi expected to top music charts.
All encompassed, Guzaarish is a must watch. Though the second half deals with a very sensitive issue like mercy killing and may sometimes appear to drag, it is also quick to grip the audience's attention with superb performances and a grand visual treat.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Guzaarish' is not a film but moving poetry that touches you in manifold ways. 'Guzaarish' is the story of Ethan Mascarenhas (Hrithik Roshan), a once successful magician who is left paralysed and bed ridden after a critical accident. Now a quadriplegic, Ethan wants to end his life and opt for euthanasia. However, things get complicated here as Ethan's loyal nurse Sophie (Aishwarya Rai) can't imagine a single day without his sight.

Faced with the dilemma of life and death, 'Guzaarish' traces the life and times of Ethan Mascarenhas. Starring A-list Bollywood actors like Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai, 'Guzaarish' has power packed performances by Aditya Roy Kapur, Monikangana Dutta, Suhel Seth, Nafisa Ali and Shernaz Patel. 'Guzaarish' is not a film but art – a collage of vibrant hues. Shot in the picturesque locales of Goa, 'Guzaarish' makes the whole screen come alive with vivacity.

Even as 'Guzaarish' is a plea for death, it beautifully captures the tenderness and beauty of life and love. Ethan might be quadriplegic but his eyes convey everything. Despite his limited interaction, Ethan is surrounded by a bunch of lively people – mother (Nafisa Ali), lawyer friend (Devyani), doctor (Suhel Seth), nurse Sophie (Aishwarya Rai) and an upcoming magician Omar (Aditya Roy Kapoor)

'Guzaarish' is the most extraordinary love story of Bollywood which unravels the patient-nurse bond through Ethan and Sophie. Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan light up the silver screen with their sizzling on-screen chemistry, which takes 'Guzaarish' to an altogether different level. With 'Guzaarish', Aishwarya and Hrithik break the Bollywood mould of stereotypes with their amazing performances that simply leaves you spell bounded. Kudos to Sanjay Leela Bhansali for making such a beautiful picture with equally good music score.

'Guzaarish' is once in a lifetime movie. Go and catch the magic this weekend.

Ratings: Four cheers for this one!
