Mumbai: There was a time when Akshay Kumar was considered one of the most dependable actors in the film industry. However, off late the actor's films haven't been able even draw a good initial at the box office.
Khiladi Kumar needs to worry as not only has his Diwali release Action Replayy failed at the box office, it's had one of the lowest openings ever for any Akshay Kumar starrer. The film was from a team which has delivered several hits in the past including Waqt and Namastey London.
The year 2010 has not been a great one for Akshay as his last release Khatta Meetha, too, sank without a trace at the box office. His second small screen venture as host on Master Chef India has not seen any significant TRPs.
Housefull is the only hit he has to his credit currently. Last year, too, five Akshay starrers - Chandni Chowk To China, 8x10 Tasveer, Kambhakt Ishq, Blue and De Dana Dan failed to live up to expectations.
So why is the Khiladi losing his charm with the audience. Is he getting typecast in loud comic roles or just not taking enough risks by working with new directors?
"Akshay has been for a while decided not to do serious films, so that leaves him with comedy only because he has not done action for a while, and doing the same kind of comedy is not working," says film critic Indu Mirani.
Akshay's next big release Tees Maar Khan is scheduled to release on December 24.
Sold to UTV for Rs 60 crore, the film has been directed by Farah Khan. The film has a lot of expectations riding on it since it's the first time Farah is working without Shah Rukh Khan after delivering two blockbusters with him.
"We hit it off immediately, he delivered better than what I expected," says Farah.
Also in the pipeline are 'Patiala House' and 'Thank You', both of them run of the mill comedies. Will Akshay Kumar have to reconsider this image change from action star to comedy king soon? The fate of 'Tees Maar Khan' may be the deciding factor.
