@ S.. yes i agree.. i guess you win some and you lose some.. i think actresses who don't do that much of out and out commercial cinema get to have more vareity in characters that they play.. they take up more challenging roles.. yes not deriding commerical cinema either it has its own imp.. but i have to say that commericial cinema does offer limited scope in roles and characters specially for females.. after a while it starts getting monotonous for them.. and that is why at a later age.. many mainstream actresses chose to branch out and do diff types of cinema.. i think its great that VB has been able to do different roles and more intese roles atleast in my eyes.. and yup she might not be in number game.. but i enjoy watching her play those characters much more than i enjoy watching the top tiar...

yeh kangs is a bit repetitive....but shes really good...she herself said shes gonna try do comedy n other genres n stuff...so im glad! Im also glad that ash is not taking herself too seriously these days and loosening up a bit....im even the more glad that this topic has been one of the the most peaceful ones ive posted in involving actresses! Therz gladness everywhere!!!

No. she is not. Tabu is still around. Tabu has done every goddamn thing related to acting. She has danced and run around trees (even if awkwardly), she has done hammy comedy (all those Govinda films), she has done subtle comedy (hera pheri), she has done the typical bubbly bollywood heroine (all her roles with Ajay Devgan, suniel shetty), she has done serious roles (astitva, chandni Bar). She even has done a horror flick I think, although I heard that movie was aweful in every aspect. She has played flawed characters with shades of gray- asititva, chandni bar. She has played an out and out vamp- maqbool. She has played the urban middle aged woman in a lighthearted rom-com - cheeni kum. She has played helpless women - namesake, and the film where Kay kay's character cheats on her. She has played a revolutionary - maachis. She has played the young conflicted/rebellious daughter- hu tu tu. She has played a rural villager - virasaat. She has done the regressive Indian woman - hum saath saath hain. Not to mention she has done a lot of regional films as well (no I have not watched those).

Well, considering how much I loved Vidya in Parineeta (that role was tailor-made for her), I have to say that I've been really disappointed in her recent performances. Like multiple people have said, she just looks like a complete misfit in out-and-out commercial movies. I don't think it has anything to do with her looks either; she just doesn't have a very young-vibe about her. And another thing I've noticed is that she suits traditional, Indian roles the best; perhaps because she's most comfortable doing those.

I watched Paa recently, and I liked her acting in Paa. I don't know if she is the best actress, but compared to Deepika, Katrina, and others - this lady knows how to act.

Just because Kajol and Rani (even Madhuri, Juhi Karisma) are all not in the limelight anymore and now we see more of the "newer" actresses does not mean they aren't the best anymore.

For me personally Rani has always been the best, is the best, and will always remain the best. No new actress can take the spot of actresses like Kajol, Juhi, Madhuri, Rani, Karisma, etc etc. These ladies have left such a huge mark in the industry that they simply can't easily be forgotten or replaced.

Actresses like Deepika, Bipasha, Priyanka, Vidya, Kareena, Sonam, Katrina etc etc may be all good actresses but they can come no where close to the impact that the older actresses created back in the days. The feeling just isn't the same. That's not saying these personalities are not great actresses. I personally LOVE Deepika, Priyanka, & Vidya. These ladies are brilliant. But again they just can't create the magic that the older actresses created!

Therefore in conclusion the best actress in my opinion will always remain Rani and then Madhuri. So what if they are inactive in films at the moment. I know for sure Rani will make a comeback eventually. And even if she doesn't no one's going to forget her mind blowing performances in Ghulam, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Saathiya, Chalte Chalte, Yuva, Hum Tum, Veer Zaara, Black, Bunty aur Babli, Paheli, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, Baabul, etc etc...And the same concept applies to Madhuri, Juhi, & Karisma. No one's going to forget them. Well at least I'm not!

Vidya is a really good actress, but calling her the "best" is over-the-top. She's really good in movies like Parineeta and Paa. But for me the "best" actress needs to be versatile; an actress should be able to perform well in comedy movies as well as serious movies. Vidya has been critically
acclaimed for movies like Paa, but has not been liked in movies like Heyy Baby.

Take Kangna for instance...she's sooo good in serious movies, but I have yet to see her in a comic role..I think she has a few comedy movies in line right?! Only after watching her acting in all types of films can we actually say, "oh she's the best actress of bollywood.."

I personally think there is not just one "best" actress out there today. I would pick Priyanka and Kareena as the two actresses that are currently closest to that title. Both have proved their talent in all types of movies. Priyanka has done justice in movies ranging from Aitraaz to Anjaana Anjaani. And Kareena has proved her talent in rom-coms like JWM and serious movies like Omkara.
