Vidya is def one of our finest actress but for me it's Rani and only Rani. She is the most talented actress we have today..Also the most versatile and then we have Tabu, Kajol (can be annoying with her over acting) .

Priyanka, Kareena and Aish are the best actresses right now, in term of acting, if not I would have include Katrina too😊!

I adore Konkona but her recent movie choices have been really crappy. She's settling for less developed characters just for the sake of more commercial cinema - and as someone who really likes her in offbeat movies like Amu, I don't think she's doing her talent justice. Hopefully, she gets it right with her upcoming releases (extremely excited for Iti Mrinalini).
Vidya is a good actress, as are Kangana and Chitrangada but regretfully, they don't have a lot of good movies lined up (Vidya, Kangana), are doing projects with shitty scripts that waste their talent (Kangana) or projects that don't ever see the light of day (Chitrangada). It's more than a little frustrating. Not a doubt in my mind that they lead in the acting department but their movie choices leave a lot to be desired.

Vidya is a good actress, but ya she has yet to experiment with other roles as well...got to agree her worst role was in Hey baby....I think Tabu was fab in both serious and comedy roles...I loved her in hera pheri although she had a small role...I have yet to see vidya do a comic role but other wise so far so good! i think she can play a glam doll, provided the director works real hard on her looks, attitude etc. Thats wat is a directors job..getting the best out of an actor!
Urmila looked real plain when she joined films, but rangeela totally transformed her into a siren! Other examples also are Rekha and karishma kapoor

One thing you guys have to understand is that these "critically acclaimed" breed of actors - Tabu, Konkona, Abhay, etc - chose their scripts very wisely and always work with above average directors, who can extract a good performance out of them. I, for one, don't get the appeal of Abhay Deol at all. I feel he is a mediocre actor - no worse or better than the likes of SRK, Hrithik, etc - who is very wise and selective in choosing the right script and working with the right director. More than his acting, I think it is his offbeat roles that appeal to the masses. I am quite certain that If he churned out the same Raj/Rahul candyfloss roles, no one would have given him another glance.

As for Tabu, though a great actress, she gave some extremely nauseating performances in the early part of her career, which I've [unfortunately] seen. And it wasn't until that she became more choosy about her roles and started working with these critically acclaimed directors that she started showing promises. I revisited Saathiya a while back (quite incidentally, just after I watched The Namesake), and I was appalled to see how much I disliked her there; she was even worse than Rani. I don't consider her overrated, though - watch her in The Namesake and you will see why she is regarded as one of the better actresses of India. But other than Maqbool, I have not seen her playing a wide variety of characters. She has perfected one kind of role (you know, the "helpless woman", much like Manisha Koirala), which she keeps on playing in every which film of hers. She has done some comedies, but she has rarely exhibited any comic timing.

Also I feel some people are overly harsh on the mainstream actors. Giving a good performance under an above average director shouldn't be so difficult to do. I've seen some extremely mediocre actors giving powerhouse performances when they are under the command of a good director. If these mediocre actors never ventured out of their comfort zone, then none of us would have figured out their limitations. If Kareena, for instance, only worked with Sudhir Mishra and Vishal Bhardwaj, and Aishwariya with Mani Ratnam and SLB only, and never did these c-grade MPKDHs and Albelas, would we have ever known how hammy their acting can really be? We would have then considered them some exceptionally great actresses without having any idea about how bad they can be at the hand of a inexperienced director.

As for Vidya, I think she is one of the better actresses we have today. But like the aforementioned actors, she is not very versatile.

Btw, by "commercial" or "mainstream" roles, I think members meant the "bubbly" ones and not some half-baked, underdeveloped character. A character can be both bubbly and substantial, but most people give way too importance to the serious roles. Juhi Chawla, for instance, was a very good actress, but she never got her due because people do not give much credence to these comic roles as much as they do to "serious/artsy" ones.

I have yet to observe many works by Konkona and Chitrangada, so won't comment on them. However, I don't think Kangana Ranaut is as good as she is made out to be. I find her a one-note actress who has yet to act. Most of the time, she plays her real life personality, which isn't acting to be honest. And someone should teach her about "subtle acting", really. All she did in her last couple of movies is shriek and scream.

i donot doubt as a versatile actor but its true that she is good for paa type roles

her acting was good in KK but compare paa and KK, i would defo choose paa

she defo wont be like Kat playing glam doll dancing in modern songs and all, so she is fine with the roles that she is doing, i like her

sorry i would like to disagree with this part. Tabu has done a wide variety of roles, be it playing a woman from 18- 60's in namesake, a total vamp in Maqbool, an independent, urban woman in cheeni kum, a fun-loving youngster in Hu tu tu....then therz all her other acclaimed works like maachis (national award), astitva where she played a guilty woman, chandni bar where she played a bar dancer (again a national award) and viraasat where she played a rural uneducated woman. Apart from those, shes done Hera pheri and toh baat pakki aswell...which did explore her comic timing. Tabu has a phenomenal body of work.

As for the "helpless woman", isn't that what every female actor plays todays hindi cinema? Right from rani in black, to kareena in omkara, vidya in paa, to priyanka in anjaana anjaani, all these roles are more or less, variations of the "helpless woman". Of course tabu has the age factor which means she cannot play teeny bopper roles anymore....but what she has done in the past is more than enough to establish her as an actor par excellence and i dare say, versatile too.

I may be a bit more informed here because i have watched her south indian works as well..including tamil and telugu films...and hence, ive seen her be more versatile than u do perhaps.

with vidya, she does have age on her side. But she dosen't look young enough to star next to a ranbir or an imran who are current hot throbs...the industry is crazy about young people..and sadly, vidya dosen't fit in which is guess she gets lesser films comparatively. I never said there was anything wrong with doing aunty type roles...tabu does them too....but therz a difference. Tabu is nearing her 40's and vidya is in her 20's. Youth appeal or mass appeal is something which is very important to sustain in the industry...while ppl like srk, ranbir, priyanka, kareena enjoy youth appeal, ppl like salman, madhuri, katrina, amitabh bachan enjoy mass appeal. Having neither, all the tabus, kokos and vidyas won't sustain for long despite their humongous talent.

Tabu is AWESOME, i will admit that i haven't seen many of her critically acclaimed performances but even the commercial ones that i have seen as a kid.. my fond childhood memories of "ruk ruk ruk arrey baba ruk".. and "raah mein unse mulaqat ho gayi".. hehe.. vijaypath.. tabu and ajay..she was just great.. recently.. i recall seeing that movie.. where she is searching for a dulha for her daughter.. she was hilarious.. loved her in hera pheri.. her comic timing is great too.. just that confidence.. the level at which you are able to connect with these ladies.. its something else for me.. I crave for natural performance out of leading ladies.. something inspiring.. something that i can be in awe of.. and i am not awed by glamour.. its done to death.. but the dearth of simplicity makes me.. crave for more natural perfromances.. People like madhuri, sri devi, juhi, tabu, vidya, rani, kajol.. these ladies just have something about them.. which makes me genuinely feel moved with their performace.. its not like i am trying to be diff by dissing mainstream actresses.. these days.. they are ok too.. but nothing which makes me stop and go wow.. like other ladies i have mentioned.. And I don't think the vidyas and tabus are any worse off.. they have their niche and time to time they come up with great performances..Tabu is ageless.. the lady has stood her ground and made a place for herself.. there was a time when she used to lap up every critic award for like every year.. i think these people have their own place and their own audience.
