Granted that she could dance well, and compared with the contemporaries, she was the best dancer of her time - but when you compare her with today's top dancers, namely Ash, you will see that Madhuri wasn't anything exceptional. She looked good and had a charm of her own, she was a decent actress too with giving a few brilliant performances here and there, but overall, I thought she was hyped more than necessary. And that's just my opinion, please don't attack me simply cause of that.

I love Manisha. She was superb in all the films listed. She was a phenomenal actress, and to her credit, she didn't need commercially successful films or directors to garner acclaims and popularirty.

IMHO her best performance is Dil Se. What a complex character, and how greatly she pulled it off!

i disagree i dont think madhuri is overrated because i think she was an amazing actress i loved her acting, i dnt think she was hyped

I agree with you, I like Madhuri too, but as an actress she was never exceptional. She is almost like SRK everyone loves her, she is charming and is commercially succesfull. But as an actor unproven (atleast SRK has a chak-de & MNIK).

She was so pretty in Saudagar - amongst the huge ensemble cast she still managed to make an impression unlike her co star whom I dont even remember now. I think she squandered her career away but then again I dont know the insider stories of Bollywood. I am puzzled by her rapid decline too - one moment she was at the top doing great movies and the other she was gone. As for Madhuri I think she was overrated too.She was good but not exceptional as she is made out to be. I think she was lucky that there was no one strong enough to compete with her during her time.

Manisha was a fantastic actress during her time, but i dont really think anything went specifically 'wrong'. She had her spotlight, did a few really brilliant films and then sort of layed low for a bit, and now she's married. I think manish'a doing fine, and i hope everyone remembers her as one of the best of the 90's.

Tabu is still doing good, isn't she. Maqbool (2003), The Namesake and Cheeni Kum (2007). Same goes for Kajol.

From what I heard, she was an alcoholic, and had to be treated.

Almost all 'good' actors are overrated, over-hyped and overexposed. They are rated, hyped and exposed more than they deserve to be. Be it a SRK, a Kajol or a Rani - all of them are overrated, irrespective of their acting capabilities. Madhuri wasn't an exception, though if it is a matter of degree, I will rate her slightly above the others mentioned when it comes to being overrated.

From the 90's, the best actresses include Manisha Koirala and Tabu, followed closely by Kajol (though she did not work in much serious or art-house flicks). Even Juhi was a better actress in the sense that she possessed a great comic timing, something rarely seen amongst actresses.

I don't think so. The 90's had, by far, the most challenging and talented heroines: Sridevi, Juhi, Kajol, Manisha, Tabu and Aishwariya Rai. Sridevi and Juhi were her tough competitors, and Kajol, Manisha and Tabu gave her quite a stiff competition too. Madhuri had a great fan following even now.

Personally I don't like Madhuri much. She never appealed to me like the way she did to the masses. Her acting never appealed to me.

i dont understand your point? Yes tabu is doing good, yes so is Kajol. Fantastic observation? why are you quoting me? is it to argue my point that i dont think anything went wrong? Well if she did become an alcoholic and had to be treated then okay. i dont think it really makes much of a difference to be honest, she was a great actress and as of now she seems to be doing fine.

I think Manisha was too much of a free thinker; she refused to blend into the sati savitri image of the 90s bollywood heroine. So even at her peak she never received much adulation like her contemporaries Madhuri Kajol et al. Lets face it, Madhuri, Kajol, Juhi these were all the Jennifer Anistons, the good girls of bollywood. While Manisha was more of rebel, she had a public spat with Subhash Ghai, she literally scorned Aishwarya in print. I mean the girl was a wild child. Not to mention she dated who and where she wanted. Her real life personality was way too overbearing for the conservative Indian audience to handle so she sold less tickets at the theatre and hence never ruled the roost. Pity really that an actress needs to suit the part even in real life when actors can smoke, drink, go to jail and fornicate with who they please.

She was great in Khamoshi, Bombay, Agnisaakshi, 1942 love story, Grahan, Dil Se. Unlike other actresses she could do both mainstream and "parallel" movies.
