New Delhi, Feb 18 (IANS) After a bumper opening, Shah Rukh Khan starrer 'My Name Is Khan' is being cold-shouldered by the audience here. Cinema hall owners blame the 'non-entertaining content' of the movie.

'There is a huge fall in 'My Name Is Khan' ticket sales. While it was just 30 percent Wednesday, it is only 20 percent Thursday. The film is not being appreciated because of the content,' Amit Awasthi, manager (programming and operations) of Spice Cinemas, told IANS.

'The entertainment aspect in the movie is zero. Thought is has some emotions, there is nothing much to offer,' he added.

A source in PVR cinemas echoed the news.

'Our occupancy has fallen from around 90 percent to 50 percent Monday onwards because of the content of the movie. We are guessing it will stretch to one week more,' said the source.

A love story set against the backdrop of racial discrimination post 9/11, 'My Name Is Khan' grossed an estimated $18 million at the worldwide box office in its opening weekend.

Directed by Karan Johar, the movie is being marketed and distributed by Fox Star in India, in the US by its sister company Fox Searchlight, and in the rest of the world by parent group company 20th Century Fox International.

'There has been a drastic fall after Monday for 'My Name Is Khan'. There is no entertainment aspect in it and lacks mass appeal. It has repeated the history of Saif Ali Khan starrer 'Kurbaan',' said Delhi-based distributor Joginder Mahajan.

'From critics' point of view both have been good movies but the youngsters today want only entertainment which these two could not fulfil,' he added.

Yogesh Raizada, corporate head (cinemas) of Wave Cinemas, however, has a different opinion for the fall in occupancy of the movie.

'Footfalls for 'My Name Is Khan' have fallen but the weekend is expected to be good. The occupancy at present is about 30 percent which is decent enough considering it is a working week and that there are close to 12-14 shows per day across different properties for the movie,' said Raizada.

'The movie will sustain business and occupancy will be close to 70-80 percent over the weekend,' he predicted.

I'm not surprised. I knew a major disadvantage to the movie would be the theme.
Its the stale theme that's also to blame for Kurbaan's failure.
With such a reputed banner, and three strong actors, Kurbaan failed ot rake in the moolah despite good reviews.
Audiences are sick and tired of terrorism. I wish the makers had paced their movies apart, but three movies on terrorism all release in the same year was a MAJOR MAJOR blunder. Especially kjohar.
Why make MNIK and Kurbaan both under your banner, with the same basic genre?

This just proves that no matter how much our industry 'evolves', we will always go back to the usual 'masala flicks' at the end of the day. No 'Entertainment factor' = Trashy film. It actually is saddening. Besides, it also depends on how one defines 'Entertainment'. For 90% of the Indian audience, entertainment entails - slapstick humour, cliched romance and dialogues, and basically a feel good factor at the end of the day.

erm dats not true at all!!!! Firstly Kurbaan and My name is khan should not be compared at all. MNIK Is a fascinating love story with a backdrop of religion and other high-level incidents whereas Kurbaan had a backdrop of terrorism mixed with religion and the core of the movie was primarily a love story. MNIK primarily deals with the social issues that asian community had to face post 9/11. for eg racial discrimination. whereas Kurbaan has two stories running concurrently - the love story between Saif and Kareena and the story of Islamic terrorists. However I feel MNIK is a serious movie dat delivers 2 social messages which are not all muslims are terrorists and secondly there're two sets of people in this world - the good and the bad. No matter how strong the evil forces are, good always triumphs. whereas Kurbaan was more of a powerful movie. I am not against Kurbaan as i merely enjoyed both movies and all the actors in the both the movies are embellished with superlative performances. However MNIK was much better than Kurbaan as SRK was extra-ordinary in a role that only proves his versatility as an actor. No bashing plz ......jus wanted to make a point that both movies completeky differ from one another and I feel they do not belong to the same genre.
Thanks

i watched the movie last weekend, and quite frankly i am not surprised with the fall. movie is strictly average. if it is was someone else other than kajol-srk, then it would have bombed just like kurbaan. no doubt srk performed real well, but this is not first time we are seeing disable act , so nothing new there. Kojol to me was over the top, annoying, screaming as usual...no surprise with her performance either...i just want her to tone down a bit PLZ.
as for the movie, omg it dragged and bored me to death at the end. it just went all the over the place, from india to US to flood to president..and wat not😳 i really request indian filmmakers to leave US post 9/11 topic, it's over done with...people in US have moved on, and they need to too. enough already🥱
