The recipe is simple and uncomplicated...
Take MY FAIR LADY.
Add DULHAN WAHI JO PIYA MAN BHAAYE.
Spray NASEEB APNA APNA.
Sprinkle DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE and RAB NE BANA DI JODI.
Hey presto, DULHA MIL GAYA is ready to serve.

In fact, MY FAIR LADY has been a hot favourite of Bollywood. Recall MAN PASAND [Dev Anand, Tina Munim] or HUM TERE AASHIQ HAIN [Jeetendra, Hema Malini]. Similarly, a number of storytellers have rehashed Rajshri's all-time hit DULHAN WAHI JO PIYA MAN BHAAYE [Prem Krishen, Rameshwari] in various avtaars, over the years.

Write your own movie review of Dulha Mil Gaya
DULHA MIL GAYA is a mix of the above-named films. Like they say in filmi lingo, it's old wine in new bottle. So what? How different can a love story be, since this genre has been done to death in Bollywood? Point noted, but the narrative ought to be engaging if it has to strike a chord and that's where DULHA MIL GAYA falters.

Merely assembling A-listers and filming the movie at panoramic locations isn't enough. The film ought to have meat and that's missing here.

Let me elaborate. Debutante director Mudassar Aziz, who has also penned the script, borrows from the past, going for the tried-and-tested stuff, but the narrative, already low on fuel, comes to a grinding halt by the time it reaches its finale.

Donsai [Fardeen Khan], a young commitment-phobic debonair, is petrified with terms like marriage and long-term relationships. Samarpreet [Ishita Sharma] is a quintessential Punjabi girl, for whom relationships are to be cherished.

Shimmer [Sushmita Sen] is a diva from the world of glamour for whom love and relationships aren't important in life as independence and success are. Pawan Raj Gandhi/PRG [Shah Rukh Khan] is a suave multi-millionaire whose heart still remains larger than his bank balance and for whom winning love is the only victory there is.

When paths cross for these four characters, they not only land up influencing each other with their outlook on relationships, but also get influenced themselves and learn a whole new meaning of the term.

Something that got ignited with D.D.L.J. continues to shimmer to this date. Our stories continue to travel from firangi land to the fields of Punjab. DULHA MIL GAYA too does that [initially], before MY FAIR LADY and RAB NE BANA DI JODI take over.

To give the credit where it's due, DULHA MIL GAYA has some interesting moments, but the problem is they are few and far between. One expects things to perk up when SRK's character is introduced [in the post-interval portions], but your hopes go crashing as nothing worthy of note occurs.

The writing has gaping flaws, which are difficult to absorb after a point. The girl travels all the way from Punjab to Trinidad and Tobago, but not once do her concerned parents call to enquire how she is. Strangely, even the girl doesn't feel the need to inform them. If that's not enough, Sushmita takes upon herself to tame Fardeen, giving you the impression that she thinks from her heart. But when it comes to her relationship with Shah Rukh, she behaves in a rather odd manner. SRK, on the other hand, seems completely besotted by her, even though she never reciprocates his feelings. Hence, her somersault in the end - just because Ishita has given her some bhashan - doesn't look convincing.

Mudassar Aziz's direction is a shade better than his writing. And that's not saying much. Given the fact that newer stories are being attempted in these fast-changing times and in view of the fact that he had some of the best talents on board, Mudassar should've seized the opportunity and told a refreshingly different and absorbing tale. But he doesn't. Sure, a few sequences are clever and smart, but that's not enough.

The music is of a mixed variety. 'Akela Dil' is groovy, while the title track is strictly okay. Cinematography is appealing.

Sushmita excels in a role that demands her to be hoity-toity. She enacts her part effortlessly. One wishes to see her more often on the big screen! Fardeen does a good job, especially towards the end when he's about to confess something vital to Ishita. Ishita delivers a sincere performance. It's a pity that a superstar like Shah Rukh is terribly wasted in an inconsequential role. It may not go down well with his fans.

Mohit Chadha has screen presence, but gets no scope. Johny Lever is wasted. Ditto for Tara Sharma. Suchitra Pillai and Howard Rosemeyer are passable. Parikshit Sahni, Bina Kak and Viveck Vaswani are as usual.

On the whole, DULHA MIL GAYA doesn't work!

Masand's movie review: Watch Dulha Mil Gaya for Sush
Cast: Fardeen Khan, Sushmita Sen

Direction: Mudassar Aziz

Dulha Mil Gaya starring Fardeen Khan and Sushmita Sen, has been four years in the making, but has arrived almost fifteen years too late. A predictable old-fashioned entertainer that's a throwback to those homogenous family films of the mid-90s, Dulha Mil Gaya borrows so much from the Yash Chopra/Karan Johar school of synthetic filmmaking that it's hard to tell if there's anything original to this story at all.

Fardeen Khan stars as NRI playboy Donzai, who must marry the village bumpkin his dead father has chosen for him if he wants access to his $5-billion inheritance. He arrives in Punjab and weds simple desi girl Samarpreet (played by newcomer Ishita Sharma), who is way too conservative and unpolished for his tastes. Marriage solemnised, Donzai leaves his new wife back in the village and returns alone to Trinidad where he continues with his wild, partying ways.

Samarpreet, not one to give up easily, lands up in Trinidad a few months later, and discovers the cad has forgotten her. Fortunately she bumps into supermodel Shimmer (played by Sushmita Sen) who gives her a complete make-over, down to a wardrobe of cleavage-baring dresses and table manners to boot.

Expectedly, Donzai falls for her in this new avatar, and the couple is happily reunited. In the end, Samarpreet returns the favour to Shimmer by enlightening her that nothing is more important than love, and by convincing her to not let go of her doting boyfriend (played by Shah Rukh Khan).

Co-written by debutant director Mudassar Aziz, the screenplay of Dulha Mil Gaya skittles from clich to clich, packing in every stereotype you can think of - from a gay butler named Lotus, to a karva chauth ceremony that ends with Shah Rukh making an entry accompanied by swelling background score.

What saves this film from complete disappointment is Sushmita Sen, who in a stroke of casting genius, plays an exaggerated version of herself, delivering an inspired performance as the snootiest, ditziest diva with the funniest lines you can think of.

On entering the first-class cabin of an airline and spotting a small-town simpleton in her neighboring seat, Shimmer knowingly declares, "Aah, upgraded passenger!"

Dulha Mil Gaya is well-worn, formulaic fare that might appeal to viewers who find comfort in the familiar, and who are still excited by those hackneyed stories about righteous Indian girls who show materialistic NRI boys the error of their ways.

I'm going with two out of five for director Mudassar Aziz's Dulha Mil Gaya; if it's not entirely unwatchable, you have Sushmita Sen to thank!

Dulha Mil Gaya: Excruciatingly bad

Bollywood | dulha mil gaya | Fardeen Khan | sushmita sen

How long does it take you to decide whether a movie is going to appeal to you or not? It didn't take me longer than the opening credits of Mudassar Aziz's "Dulha Mil Gaya".

Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen poses for a picture during the premiere ofCall me judgemental, but when you see a rather chubby Fardeen Khan attempting to woo a pretty young thing in the most half-hearted way possible and Sushmita Sen referring to everyone in sight as "daaaaahling" even before the opening credits have rolled, you cannot help but cringe.

As you settle down for what will be a very long three hours, you hope that some cinematic miracle will make this film bearable. But of course, that is hoping for too much. When your lead protagonists are named Shimmer (Sen) and Donsai (Khan), what else can you expect?

So Donsai aka Tej Dhanraj, playing perhaps the most clichd role in Bollywood history, has an eye for the pretty ladies but an aversion to commitment and marriage.

Unfortunately, his rich industrialist father has other plans, and decrees in his will that Donsai will inherit his wealth only if he marries the daughter of his friend, a village belle in Punjab (yes, this movie is all about the clichs).

Blinded by greed, Donsai marries Samarpreet (newcomer Ishitta Sharrma) and promptly catches a flight to the Caribbean, telling her he will come back. Of course, he never does, and after singing a song in his praise and a few forlorn shots involving a Coca-Cola can (don't even ask) Samarpreet also flies to the Caribbean to check on her husband.

In the plane, she meets Shimmer (Sushmita Sen) who decides to help Samarpreet get her philandering husband back.

Shimmer herself has an admirer in PRG or Pawan Raj Gandhi (Shah Rukh Khan in a cameo) a successful businessman who is being made to wait in the wings because Shimmer won't give up her career and settle down (as if the two cannot go hand in hand).

"Dulha Mil Gaya" moves towards the resolution of both love stories but not before we get a lot of accented Hindi (from Sen), expressionless acting (from the whole cast, especially Fardeen Khan) and some truly awful dialogue. Watch out for the one where Samarpreet lectures Shimmer on Indian women. Awful.

Even the cameo by Shah Rukh Khan isn't enough to save this film, although I must admit that he is welcome visual relief, especially in light of Sen's bad make-up and Fardeen's aforementioned chubbiness.

This is one of those films that deserve to be watched at home with friends and a few beers during a "bad movie marathon". Avoid it in all other circumstances.

Srk said from the start, he is doing a cameo but the director told srk to do extended cameo. In a recent interview, Srk said he won't be doing a cameo. Audience knew Srk doesn't have a cameo in the movie and i doubt this movie to become even average. I am glad Srk isn't being associated with the movie, giving interviews or Attending Premieres. I will wait for the DVD. This is the same movie where Srk was injured. He did this movie for the friendship sake.

Well, he only did it as a favour to Viveck Vaswani or whatever his name is...because Viveck had helped SRK in his intial days. SRK always tries returning the favours. So thats the sole reason for doing this crap. And he didnt even do a single promotion for it. I'm sure most people realized this isnt a proper SRK movie.

Sushmita shimmers, but 'Dulha Mil Gaya' is a mess (IANS Film Review; Rating:* 1/2)

2010-01-09 13:20:00

: 'Dulha Mil Gaya'; Cast: Sushmita Sen, Shah Rukh Khan, Fardeen Khan, Ishita Sharma; Director: Mudassar Aziz; Rating: * 1/2

There is only one reason why this hideous satire gone awry can be tolerated for a bit. Sushmita Sen playing the broadly satirical and hugely self-important Shimmer just simmers on screen!

Dazzling despite her fluctuating weight, in-sync with her character in spite of a script that doesn't seem to know its mind, and utterly oblivious of the bustling mess that first-time director Mudassar Aziz has created, Sushmita just has so much fun with her character.

Sadly no component in the plot supports Sushmita's unique ability to create a woman who is simultaneously sexy and cerebral. How did Aziz think he could pass off this exotic but idiotic echo of Hrishikesh Mukherjee's 1969 'Pyar Ka Sapna' as a contemporary take on commitment-phobia?

There are some interesting sporadically-touching moments in the mish-mash of chaotic comic timing and misguided social messages. Watch Sushmita in that moment when all her cynicism about the validity of the sweet innocent village girl from Amritsar dissolves in a fleeting close-up. That moment is worth more than the entire film.

'Dulha Mil Gaya' seems to endorse garishness in place of glamour, hedonism rather than a high-life and a ceaseless stream of awkwardly-written jumble of scenes that would probably be rejected in a halfway decent American sitcom on the haughty heiress and the incorrigible playboy.

Sushmita is every inch the haughty heiress. But how much of the rest of the cast ranging from Fardeen Khan to the over-the-top Howard Rosamayer (playing the effeminate man Friday) can she control?

One expects the screen to light up when 'guest' star Shah Rukh Khan turns up in the second half. Tragically the anarchic humour of the second half dips to an all-time low, leading to a fractured climax that even the most diehard romantic would find hard to stay awake for.

Yes, the first half has its interesting interludes. Shimmer's first encounter on flight with Samarpreet (Ishita Sharma), the poor lost bride looking for her playboy husband in Trinidad, crackles because of Sushmita's patronising preening. The way Shimmer takes the bereft Samarpreet under her wings could have been done with more restraint and panache.

The gaudy interiors just don't match with the natural scenic splendour of the Trinidadian outdoors. Artificiality is the middle-name of this wacky wedding on speed.

Most of the time we get the feeling that the crew of this film went to Trinidad to party with noisy music for company. Someone forgot to carry the script for this corny Caribbean cruise.

It's largely unbearable even for diehard Sushmita Sen fans.
