Is '3 Idiots' the next 'Sholay'?

one more people who are talking abt sholay...

sholay is undoubedtly the biggest film made...but no one can disagree how much of a waste and thrash it ihad..dharmendra's overacting....hema's overacting...gosh...if people thnk that they acted ... i dont think they have a good sense of cinema...

besides...sholay was been washed up by every critic every reviewer becoz of poor screenplay and narration...but sholay was a mass film, and even opening to a mere 40 % opening...it made history..and only becoz of three things...amzad ali khan, sanjeev kumar and mehbooba song ....rest things became popular became of these things...

so sholay is a blockbuster...but if u say it is the MOST WELL MADE MOVIE IN INDIAN CINEMA....i m sorry ur knowledge of cinema is quite POOR😆

MOTHER INDIA....NO FILM IN INDIA can cross the status of Mother India...HATS OFF to nargis👏

Traaash!! It can NEVER be the "next" Sholay. Not by a long shot, not even in its biggest dreams.

😆 Yes, but that was the style back in the days. It was deliberate. The over-the-top villian and the vigilant hero. Have you not read Javed Akhtar's interview about the movie. 😛 Would it have worked if Hema's character was more subdued or Dharmendra's acting was more understated. I doubt it. So, the packaging is important.

If we look at 3 Idiots, even Boman Irani is over-the-top sometimes and same with Aamir but it works. There are many other characters, but I don't wish to go into nitty gritties. Depends a lot on the setting, my friend. 3 Idiots too has a larger than life feeling.

I have no wishes to get a PhD in Indian Cinema, so I hardly care about increasing or decreasing my knowledge about cinema. 😛

I don't know about others, but I don't want movies with that intention. My intention is to watch good entertaining movies, period.

I haven't seen ROcket Singh but I liked Wake Up Sid more than 3 Idiots. And I am one of those people who didn't particularly like 3 Idiots and I happen to know quite a few who feel the same way. But the one big thing is - almost everyone I know has seen 3 Idiots. 😛 So that explains the blockbuster thing.

ANd I agree that was the style then - Sholay is the quintessential Masala movie and one that holds my interest quite well and so I happen to like it. 3 Idiots didn't do it for me.

I think to a certain extent it is impossible to come up with "a best movie of all time" sort of superlative because styles and aesthetics change so much. It almost is like comparing apples and oranges. If I had to pick a few old films I like a lot they would be Guide, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, Golmaal, Sholay, and Pyasa. In recent times two films I have liked a lot have been Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi and Black Friday. I could never pick 1 all-time favourite movie of mine - it would always be a list, but 3 Idiots wouldn't be one of them.

Bluemoon ji, the thing is I know some people watch movies with their own set of prejudices. Harder to enjoy a movie for what it is at those times, isn't it. 😛 It's a general comment, btw, so take it as that.

If we look at the % of people who did not like 3 Idiots, it's a very small number. 😛 As I said, all five fingers can't be the same. 😉

If you liked Wake Up Sid, you will LOVE Rocket Singh. I loved both the movies and I have been recommending them to everyone ever since I saw them. 😃
