I was expecting it.😉
I haven't watched it and so would not comment on it.
But I think there is limit to this terrorist plots and not many peopel want to go adn see Who did it, WHy they did it and how they shoud be understood.....
So I guess good movei is appreciated but its the film with a terrorist plot and whre the main hero ghas shades of terrorist does not get enough audiences.
Shoot out at Lokhandwala was hit, so was wednessday, Ab tak chappan....there is a track of which kinda of movie themes on terrorism people like to see. They do not want to sympathize with them they want them to be punished.....I guess....
PS: Even though Saif requested 😆people to go and watch Kurbaan for his kiss and love making scene....they didn't go..HOW RUDE..

The problem with Kurbaan is that it 'appears' to be an intellectual kind of film. And the movie audience doesn't like the excercise its brain cells whilst watching a movie. I mean, when was the last time a really good, thought-provoking movie was a runaway hit? Rang De Basanti comes to mind, but that movie had Aamir Khan and great music. Saif isn't as big a star as Aamir. Some might cite Aamir's Taare Zameen Par as a 'thought-provoking' film, but IMHO, TZP was exceptionally dumbed-down, sentimental and kinda preachy. It's a movie that dictated to use it's theme and message, leaving nothing to interpretation.

That, and the fact that the film looks super depressing. People don't want to depress themselves; they want the escapism offered by films like Ajab Prem. It's a pity, because none of Kareena's performance oriented films seem to work. Omkara, Chameli, Kurbaan, Yuva... all are duds.
It's not only a trend indigenous to the Indian diaspora. Even Hollywood conforms to the same trend. Summer blockbusters like Transformers and Harry Potter and romantic comedies rake in the moolah despite not being cinematically great, whereas serious dramas don't always make money. There are exceptions, of course, but as often as not this is the norm.

B.O. update: 'Kurbaan' has below-the-mark start
- By Taran Adarsh, November 21, 2009 - 08:48 IST
The much-hyped KURBAAN opened to a below-the-mark response. The opening was 40% to 50% at plexes, but much lower at single screens. The film has had a wide release and the numbers were expected to be huge, but the opening day business was not in proportion with the stature of the film.

The next two days [Saturday and Sunday] are crucial and the film should show an escalation in business. Meanwhile, the film fetched Rs. 1 crore in paid previews on Thursday night, according to a statement received by this writer from UTV.

well after reading plot and scenes of the whole movie including the spoilers etc, i srsly don't see how this movie can be one of those "intelligent flicks".. there are so many holes in the plot..and so many WTF moments..

so Vivek's and Kareena's characters decide to play hero without getting the right authority and resources involved... and seducing a terrorist to get some documents ..LOL way to go Bollywood... it must be in major dearth of good movies that any movie with a slightly serious plot or some global issue get hailed as great...

I haven't seen the film so I will decide if it is indeed intelligent or not once I leave the theatre but from the reviews I have read there seemed to be quite a few in-your-face-WTF-kind of loopholes in the plot - much like New York which was a runaway hit.

And yes Taare Zameen Par had its own problems.

There are some films that haven't been runaway hits or the biggest grossers of the year but they have done well commercially and were also intelligent (IMO ofcourse) - some of them are Oye Lucky Lucky Oye (its a satire about class and consumerism in Delhi - definitely not your average masala fare), Kaminey also did well (another film laced with dark humour, and there is certainly no escapism in it - it is an intelligent lark), Dev D was a success (and that is certainly not feel good cinema). OLLO especially deserves a mention because it suffered initially when it released right when 26/11 happened and the whole country was glued to the TV screen. But the film picked up with good word of mouth.

I think Kurbaan's problem might end up being that they promoted the sex scenes a bit too much considering it was supposed to be a "hard hitting film about terrorism". That might have kept viewers confused/wary and away. If other intelligent films with lesser star power (Dev D, OLLO, Khosla Ka Ghosla etc.) can do well then why can't a film like Kurbaan which boasts of such a big star cast? If anything atleast the film should get a good opening. New York with a similar theme did get one (and I didn't think the film was intelligent or good). I think these days the kind of opening a film gets is entirely dependent on how its promoted and whether it has the big names or not.

i agree. The promos of Kurbaan were confusing as to whether they wanted to focus on the hot romantic scenes between Saif-Kareena or the issue of trans-continental terrorism.

Tha'ts what I JUST said Geet, to someone on kareena's forum. Dharma screwed up big time. HTey promoted all those intimate scenes all together and in every aspect and you know hwat...when I watched it...it was NOTHING! Rasiya lasts a min max. THe rest are casual closed lip kisses. Very sweet, nothing vulgur. If anything, johar just alienated the family audiences even more.

My friend watched the first show and said it was pretentious at best. No she wasnt the aam junta who need to escape the reality of life. According to her the film sucked because of the many loop holes. IMO I think they raised the expectation too high promoting it as an intelligent serious film.
Edited to add that her Multiplex was full.So it might do good business over the weekend who knows.
