In real life, if you feel your colleague is far more superior to you in intelligence, talent, charisma, efficiency, chances are you might feel the heat. Jealousy, generally, stems from there. In the process, the best of relations get strained. LONDON DREAMS, directed by Vipul Shah, talks of two musicians, thick pals actually, and how jealousy drives a wedge in their friendship.

Let's clear a few myths before discussing the positive and negative factors of this film. LONDON DREAMS is not BAIJU BAWRA. LONDON DREAMS is not ROCK ON!!, ABHIMAAN, YAARANA or SAAJAN either [a section of the industry wants us to believe that]. The truth is, LONDON DREAMS borrows from Milos Forman's brilliant film AMADEUS [1984], which was based on Salieri and Mozart's life. In fact, Suneel Darshan too had made a film based on AMADEUS called SHAKALAKA BOOM BOOM [2007; Bobby Deol, Upen Patel].

LONDON DREAMS is a complete departure from Vipul Shah's earlier outings, AANKHEN, WAQT, NAMASTEY LONDON and SINGH IS KINNG [produced by Vipul, directed by Anees Bazmee]. This film is about relationships and tends to get very real and intense, in the post-interval portions specifically. The scale of LONDON DREAMS is gigantic and the execution of concerts [it's about a band] sweeps you off your feet.
In terms of execution, it wouldn't be erroneous to state that LONDON DREAMS is amongst Vipul Shah's most accomplished works to date. Also, it boasts of incredible performances by Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn. But there are hiccups too and it's these deficiencies that bog the film down!

They were childhood friends. But they had little in common except their family's connection with music. While Arjun's [Ajay Devgn] life was consumed by a passionate drive to get on stage and realize his grandfather's unfulfilled dream, Mannu [Salman Khan] was content with remaining a child at heart with no higher ambition than enjoying the good things in life.

As Arjun forges a band with Zoheb [Rannvijay Singh], Wasim [Aditya Roy Kapur] and Priya [Asin], a music enthusiast from a conservative South Indian family, far away in Punjab, music becomes a survival tool for Mannu, who takes to playing in wedding bands in his village.

Arjun gets Mannu to London and makes him a part of the band, but soon realizes he's created the biggest threat and obstacle to his own ambitions.

Mannu, with his inherent musical gift, becomes an instant darling of the crowds. Arjun's unbearable pangs of jealousy and insecurity only worsen when Mannu also unwittingly woos and wins his secret love, Priya. As he battles his inner demons, Arjun slowly devises a sinister plan to destroy his best friend.

It takes time to get into Ajay's world [its Ajay who's narrating the story here]. The film moves back and forth and it's only when the two buddies, now adults, meet that you realize where the story is headed. The first hour depicts the two extreme characters - Ajay, who's an introvert and who cannot think of anything but his goal and Salman, a happy-go-lucky guy, laidback and fun-loving, least focused.

The narrative has some interesting moments in the first hour, but the actual story unravels only towards the second half. The first half, frankly, only sets things up for the explosive drama that is to follow. The wheels start moving when Ajay plays a vicious game and hatches a conspiracy to ruin his buddy's career.

It's the second hour that does the trick. You can't help but carry several sequences in your heart, even after you've made an exit from the auditorium...
Note the scene when Salman makes four different tunes from the original tune created by Ajay.
Note the scene when Ajay meets an inebriated Salman and professes revenge, while Salman is completely clueless about Ajay's sinister plans.
  • Note the scene when the band arrives in London after a 3-city concert and they're received by aggressive mediapersons.

But there're roadblocks too. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is a downer. LONDON DREAMS is about a rock band, about music, about concerts and the music had to be the soul of the film. Unfortunately, it's not! The songs have been filmed in the most energetic fashion, but how one wishes the music was one of the strengths of the film.

Also, the film could've concluded when the two friends re-unite at the station. Adding one more song thereafter only dilutes the impact of the emotionally correct sequence that has just been witnessed. Besides, the song in question hasn't been promoted either, so it only comes across as an aberration.

Prior to that, Ajay's outburst at the end of the concert is far from convincing. The film has a real feel, real characters and real situations, but the outburst looks unreal and is one of the drawbacks, from the writing point of view. It's just not convincing!

Besides, Ajay's childhood character is shown fleeing from the airport and making it big in a foreign land [London], without any support whatsoever. It's unpalatable!

Vipul Shah has handled this intricate subject well, but the writing could've been tighter. Sejal Shah's cinematography is super. Brownie points for capturing the concerts brilliantly. Salim-Sulaiman's background score matches international standards.

Both Salman and Ajay vie for top honours. Salman has a role that the junta would take to instantly and the actor too endears himself to the viewers. He's stupendous. When it comes to displaying intensity on screen, very few can live up to the standards set by Ajay. To state that he packs in a power-packed performance would be an understatement. They, in fact, compliment each other wonderfully well.

Asin is admirable and pairs off very well with Salman. She is sure to have a new name after this film - Chennai Express [that's how Salman addresses her affectionately, all through the film]. Om Puri has a brief role. Aditya Roy Kapur is very good and registers an impact. Rannvijay Singh doesn't get much to do, except throw nasty looks at Salman. Manoj Pahwa provides some funny moments. Brinda Parekh is okay.

On the whole, LONDON DREAMS has superb performances from its principal cast and several emotionally-charged sequences as its two trump cards. But its biggest drawback is its climax and also the music, which is the weakest link of the movie. At the box-office, the film should appeal more to the multiplex audience than the masses. Business at big centres, especially at metros, should be better, but mini-metros and towns will be a contrast.

In the first half, the script is hugely disappointing. There are instances of circumstances that make your jaw drop in disbelief. Arjun (Ajay Devgan) is being taken by his uncle, Om Puri, to London after his father's demise. Why he is going there, no one knows. But what takes the cake is at the airport, Arjun leaves his uncle and runs off. That's not all, he lives a good 20 years in the UK, furthers his singing ambition and manages to raise a band of Indian origin called, London Dreams.

How he grew up, where he stayed, why his uncle never lodged a police complaint is things we should not ask. A good 20 years later, or so, he is at his uncle's fast food corner ordering some food with his band friends. His uncle does not recognize him. Later, after a concert, Arjun calls out to his uncle!

CHECK OUT: With Salman and Ajay, I had to be on my toes

Another instance of poor scripting is when at an audition, Arjun requests Priya (Asin) to join him. She knows all about him. C'mon, this is an audition of a lifetime and he is chancing it by requesting some female he saw dancing on the street.

Thankfully, post interval the pieces are picked up and the script gets tighter. Mercifully, there is Salman Khan (Manu) to grab your attention, with a laudable performance. I'm no Salman Khan fan, but the way he has tackled this role is like he has put his whole life into it. The fun-loving Manu, Arjun's childhood friend steals the thunder from Arjun's nose with his performance, just as he does on stage during their concerts. If you are a Salman fan, this is one performance of his you have to watch.

Arjun and Manu are childhood friends living somewhere in Punjab. Arjun has a dream of performing at Wembley to a full house; Manu is content playing the fool in the village. Arjun's parents are dead against their son's choice of career. Things turn in his favour when Arjun's father passes away and his uncle takes him to London. There (20 years later) he meets up with two brothers from Pakistan and sets up his band. Manu, in one of his conversations on the telephone, informs Arjun that he is getting married and Arjun flies down to Punjab, pronto! His first visit after he left for foreign shores (another of the 'script tease'). Here, he hears Manu singing and invites him too, to join his band. Once there, Manu steals the show with his singing and Arjun is sidelined as the crowds root for Manu.

CHECK OUT: SALMAN KHAN Interview

Arjun's dream is shattered. What he dreamt for himself, he sees it happening to his friend. He plans the downfall of his best friend, as he cannot contain his jealousy. He vents his fury at Wembley Stadium when he does get to perform there. All that the crowd wants is Manu, while Arjun is belting out his number. Arjun on his part has made sure that Manu will never come back on stage.

The music is good while you hear it but the lyrics or tune is not something you will take home. A good opportunity lost for the trio of Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy.

Vipul Shah has garnished the film with some convincing concert scenes but its Salman and Salman alone who turns the table for LONDON DREAMS and makes it worth a watch.

Movie Review: London Dreams (2009)

Cast: Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan, Asin, Om Puri, Khalid Azmi, Michael Gamarano,, Rannvijay Singh, Babsy, Artner, Brinda Parekh, Adithya Roy Kapoor

Producer: Aashin Shah

Director: Vipul Amrutlal Shah

Music Director: Shankar- Ehsaan-Loy

EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI

After the super success of Aankhen, Waqt, Namastey London and Singh is King, Vipul Amrutlal Shah presents London Dreams. The main highlight of the movie is Vipul for the first time is working without his lucky mascot Akshay Kumar and ropes in stars- Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan, Asin, Om Puri, Rannvijay Singh and Adithya Roy Kapoor. Post Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, the duo Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan has come together for the movie after almost a decade.

The story revolves around two infancy friends Arjun (Ajay Devgan) and Mannu (Salman Khan). The two friends, completely diverse in their nature and living, however one thing that was common in the two was music. Arjun an ambitious guy from India, dreams to make it big in music world and lands in London forming his own band with Priya (Asin), Zoheb (Rannvijay Singh) and Wasim (Adhitya Roy Kapoor).

Whereas Mannu, on the other hand is a simple guy, young at heart, no great ambitions in life, and enjoying life to the core in India. A talent gifted Mannu, however wastes his talent of singing by performing in local weddings.

Arjun on one of his visits to India, take Mannu to London to include him in his band. Mannu due to his authentic way of performing become's the favourite of the mass instantly. This makes Arjun feel jealous and apprehensive as what Arjun took years to achieve, Mannu did it at once. That's when things start taking a catastrophic turns and twists, making Arjun insecure

The envy and the evil spirit further grow in Arjun when Mannu finds a place in Priya's heart, whom Arjun loved but failed to express the same. It's then when Arjun plan's to destroy his best friend. Thus begins the journey of emotions, drama, jealousy and revenge.

London Dreams is certainly the best work from Vipul Shah till date. The director very well expresses the emotions of the die-hard friendship that feel you relate with real life. The movie technically is absolutely flawless and the cinematography by Sejal Shah is top notch. The background score by Salim-Sulaiman goes well with theme of the film. Surely the director has left no stone unturned for his (Dream) project.

Amongst the drawbacks of the film it is the climax and the music. The climax is a bit over-stretched and the concert with which it ends is a bit disappointing as it involves a slow track. The end with a thumping fast track could have been better. On the other hand the music of the film by the talented trio ends with a disappointing note. The music about the movie should have been more impactful as it is all about rock band but fails.

Talking about the actors, undoubtedly their performance has been the best. The chemistry between Ajay Devgn and Salman Khan is amazing and has build up even more in a decade which is very well seen on-screen. Salman Khan is stunning and impressive. Ajay Devgn's performance is outstanding and flawless. Asin is commendable and does justice with the role. Aditya Roy Kapoor and Rannvijay create an impact instantly.

Overall it's a thumb's up for the movie!!!

London Dreams

Amadeus, anyone? We'd suggest you don't even mention the name of the legendary film, which went on to win eight Oscars, in the same breath as
Still from London Dreams More Pics

London Dreams, the film that is ostensibly inspired by it.

Only then will it be possible to savour the finer aspects of this desi dosti pix that follows the relationship between two childhood buddies who share a similar passion for music. If Milos Forman's Amadeus traced the stormy comradeship between Antonio Salieri (F Murray Abraham), the Vienese court composer, and legendary genius, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce), then London Dreams sees a lesser talented Ajay Dvgn articulating a similar angst as his gifted friend, Salman Khan, steals the thunder, despite his disinterest in super stardom.

But the similarity ends there. For, the plot of London Dreams is completely simplistic and linear, often bordering on the implausible. Devgn's journey from Bhatinda to London, his formation of a rock band with a bunch of stragglers, his rise to popularity and his sudden climactic outburst lack all depth. Salman's fall from grace is kiddish too. Suddenly, from sniffing cocaine, thrust on to him by a mysterious girl, he grows into a diehard junkie, only to de-addict himself with equal felicity. And then comes the climax, running helter-skelter from Devgn's jealous outburst to rushed repentance, with Salman signing off with the moral of the film: Pra toh pra hota hai, pra! (A brother is a brother, brother, so no sorrys.) Then again, it's pronto to London, to fulfil the still unfulfilled London Dream of making it big in Wembley with Devgn's desi band. Truly, this one's a poor piece of script writing by Suresh Nair.

But there's a lot that works in the film's favour. Topping the list are the performances by both Ajay Devgn and Salman Khan who once again share a scintillating chemistry after Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. It's refreshing to see Devgn return to his angry young man mould as Arjun, a role he's played to perfection in films like Company and Omkara. Salman, as Mannu, the libidinous village yokel, reprises his brattish avtar, playing to the gallery with his throwaway lines and his devil-may-care attitude. There is an effortless spontaneity and ease to everything he does, be it being stripped to his boxers at Heathrow or playing the trumpet in the local Raja Rani band in Bhatinda. The first half of the film, set mostly in the village, has a rustic charm and innocent banter as the two buddies try to catch up on their dosti. The second half -- the dushmani track -- intermittently bursts into life when a self-flagellating Devgn raves and rants against the injustice of God. Why did you give him the talent and me the passion, he clamours, swearing to bring down his best buddy who has become more popular than him. What's more, he's managed to walk away with pretty girl, Asin, too, despite his playboy ways. Truly, a double jeopardy for our angst-ridden hero who become a victim of envy and rage. It's the weight-and-wild combo of Devgn and Salman which imbues the film with most of its appeal and draws you into it with the strength of the performances. Asin too is effervescent, though she has little to do. MTV hero Rannvijay sadly ends up as a sidekick, hanging on the fringes as Devgn's shadow. But the biggest let down of the film is it's music. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's songs are completely out of sync with the rock band flavour of the film. Can't remember a single foot-tapping number, other than the ode to Hanuman.

Nevertheless, watch it for the Devgn-Salman thunder and for the simple reason that this is definitely one of Vipul Shah's better films.

Big star cast helping its cause

Salman Khan in London Dreams
Salman Khan in 'London Dreams'

Massive stage settings, rock concerts and music as a binding factor, Ajay Devgn-Salman Khan starrer "London Dreams", which releases on Oct 30, relies on the bond of friendship more than its rock background.

Produced and directed by Vipul Shah, the movie stars Asin Thottumkal in the female lead, while Akshay Kumar will be seen in a cameo. Rannvijay Singh and Om Puri too feature in the movie.

"'London Dreams' is a drama about two friends and their relationships, their roles, individuality and problems," Ajay told IANS.

Added Asin: "It is a musical with a lot of emotions and twists in the story. But it's something that heavily relies on music."

Shot extensively in Paris and London, the story revolves around childhood friends Arjun (Ajay) and Mannu (Salman) who have a music lineage in their family history.

Arjun dreams of being on stage as a performer to live up to his grandfather's unfulfilled ambitions while Mannu has little interest in the instruments of his father, a music teacher.

Arjun's determination takes him to London where he forms a band with Priya (Asin) and others. But his friend Mannu tries to make his livelihood as a wedding band performer in the village.

Arjun eventually invites Mannu to London to complete his band contrary to his own belief that the latter can create a competition.

But Mannu surprises him by turning out to be an entertainer. With his unique style, he becomes more popular with the audiences leaving Arjun envious. His insecurity increases when he realises Priya is smitten by Mannu.

The band embarks on a three-city tour where Arjun deceives Mannu into promiscuous sex and illicit drugs. As the tour concludes, the band heads to London to perform at Wembley Stadium where Mannu comes to senses and chooses the righteous path and supports his friend.

"London Dreams" has managed a good buzz, courtesy the big names associated with it.

Noteworthy is that the songs in the movie have been shot like live concerts.

The movie is releasing with another-big budget venture "Aladin".
