And I don't think Deepika is a good enough actress YET to be able to carry off an art film convincingly... Maybe in the future.

I agree-- she has yet to prove herself as an actor....hopefully she will soonish. Art or commercial doesnt matter.

I thought I would put the actual quote from her instead of just the headline which isn't a 100 percent accurate.

"Every film is a challenge for me which evolves me as an actress. I don't think I need to act in an art film to know myself better as an actress," Padukone said. (Emphasis mine)

Personally I think the "art cinema" movement as such died in the 80s. That was the time where a lot of films were backed by the government. These days there isn't "parallel" cinema as such.

I prefer to think of films as good or bad instead of art v. whatever the other group is supposed to be called. There is art involved in making a good and engaging masala film. There are so called "art or new age films" with bad acting and scripts.

The one distinction that I can see is between the big budget v. indie cinema. The latter don't necessarily guarantee a good product, neither is the former always bad. But their scales are obviously different though they might not always be all that different in content.

Kaminey and Luck By Chance are big budget, regular Hindi films. Dev D was made under an independent banner. They both involved the same amount of art and I liked them all.

n' I beg to differ w/ the notion that only so called 'actors' or good actors can ACT in an art film. For Instance, Lisa Ray was brilliant in Water. She aint good actress but she pulled off the role of Kalyani convincingly. And true that you dont need an art film to prove yourself.

Comeon....don't act coy. Yes, every movie is an art. But you and everyone else on here knows what she meant by her statement. She was referring to parallel cinema. The kind Nandita Das and Smita patel are known for.

I really did not expect Deepika of all the people to say this. I thought she was the sensible one. This comment of her comes across as snobbish just like certain someone's silver spoon comment did not too long ago. 🤢 And I'm not going to cut Deepika any slack just because majority on here are Deepika Padukone fans.

I never watched a film of Nandita Das

but just like Geet said, a movie is good or bad. An actor is good or bad. It doesn't matter whether it's commecial movie or small budget movie

And you don't have to.😃

But I still stand by my earlier statement. I still don't buy the art v. other film distinction. There is on the other hand a distinction between big budget films v. independent films which I feel is a more accurate description. Apart from that there are just good and bad films, and good and bad acting.

Evidence of a bad actor in an "art" film: Rahul Bose in most of his films.

Good actor in a "commercial" film: Aamir Khan in Lagaan.

Sure even commercial or small budget movies need good actors but with art movies, that is the only thing there is.

for example, OSO didn't need good actors because the movie demanded nothing out of them.

on the other hand, a movie like water-- the only story lies in how the actors act because otherwise there are no songs, or glamor to take the attention away.

All of her movies so far, LAK, OSO, Bachna Ae Haseeno-- she hasn't had a chance to showcase her talent because all of those roles are not demanding... Now if she does a movie like Omkara, or Kaminey (they are not art but as close to it as you get) then yah, maybe she can say she doesn't need an art movie to prove herself.

yeahhh I am fan too but I do acknowledge the fact that she is not so good of an actress. and please no re-hashing the past. It can get ugly.

Deepu might not need "art" films to prove her talent but she certainly does need to hone up her acting skills to prove her talent. She wont be able to continue long in bollywood by wearing designer clothes and playing same kind of roles again and again.. She certainly would need to add versitality in her portfolio to survive.. cauz their is lots of competition out there and doing diff roles and experimental type of cinema is becoming better for actors these days.. The dayz of Masala cinema are kinda getting over and a little bit of variety in comercial cinema is definately getting appreciated.. So I hope that she adapts quickly to the enviornment and gets experimental.. otherwise she or any other actress would face trouble in these times..

Her dialogue delivery is so awkward and bad, that art or no art, we know there is no acting talent in her.
