The pre-release buzz for Ashutosh Gowarikar's 'Whats Your Raashee' has been substantial. The movie marks alot of first-Ashutosh's first attempt at a rom- com, Priyanka's history-making 12 character portrayal in the film, the reuniting of Harman and Priyanka's pairing after Love Story 2050. On the surface, What's Your Raashee is primarily a romantic comedy
however on a deeper level the film examines social issues prevalent in India today. The social relevance of the film, unique style of narration and Priyanka Chopra's incredible performance in each of the 12 Raashees' are the film's strong suits however the film lacks a well-roundedness and sharpness which dilutes the impact of the movie, leaving the audiences disillusioned at the end of the film.
Before watching the film one wonders whether Ashutosh Gowarikar would be successful at his first attempt in moving from lush period epics to the genre of romantic comedy. Would Priyanka be able to carry all the 12 different roles to her fullest potential? Would Harman be third time lucky?
Whats Your Raashee is set in modern India where you have Chicago's most eligible Bachelor Yogesh Patel(Harman Baweja) living life to the fullest juggling studies and work together. In the morning, he is a full time student, in the afternoon he works for a marketing agency and by the night he is DJ at discotheque. One fine day, Yogesh gets a call from his family about a family emergency hearing of which he rushes home. Upon arrival Yogesh realizes that the reason for his return is not a family emergency but to coax him into marriage. Yogesh has to get married in the next 10 days in order to save his family from a substantial crisis. Yogesh decides on the plan of meeting a girl from each Raashee (Zodiac). From there begins Yogesh' journey to finding the right life partner for him.
Whats your Raashee is based on Madhu Rye's (Kimball Ravenswood), however the treatment of the film is completely different from the novel. The highlight of the film is how Ashutosh Gowarikar skilfully integrates each character from different Raashees into Yogesh's story. The film flatters on a couple of counts. The added side plots between such as the extra marital affair of Yogesh's Uncle and his wife, only act as a distraction and impediment in the flow of the film. Secondly, the climax of the film is a huge disappointment and is where the film unravels. As the movie draws to a close and the audience begins playing the guessing game as to whom Yogesh would pick, the penultimate choice of his life partner doesn't connect with viewing audiences.
The music of the film is one of the film's highlights. Debutant music director Sohail Sen gives you a completely groovy and soothing album featuring foot-tapping numbers such as Sue Che, Aaja Lehrate, Aa Le Chal and then gives you a dose of the sombre with songs such as Bikhiri, Bikhri.
Whats Your Raashee completely rest on Priyanka's shoulders. The young actress is creating standards and exceeding them with each film and each performance. If you thought Priyanka was excellent in Fashion and Kaminey, her performance in What's Your Raashee ranks as her best to date. To portray 12 different roles in one film with such naturalness and effortlessness is absolutely remarkable. The mannerisms, body language, accent, voice modulations are entirely individual and distinct for each character she portrays. A flawless performance indeed!
Harman Baweja as Yogesh Patel shows tremendous growth from his previous two films. Harman's character is central to the film and an anchor to the story. Many members of the audience would definitely connect with Harman's dilemma in the film.
On the whole, Whats Your Raashee is a unique experience for the viewing audiences in terms of concept and narration however one wishes the director would have incorporated and addressed the sensibilities of modern audiences into a satisfying conclusion.
